sorry to blunder into the matter a bit, but i guess it's a pretty fForegone conclusion i wont be wining the prize. So, erm, if you please, may i entertain you with some questions?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The hint given is to use lines/words. However, fFor a beale cypher, the probable document to work fFrom, if one hasn't been supplied, appears to be the decalaration of independence, in which lines are a bit more arbitrary. fFurthermore, are we looking at the same puzzle here? the 'puzzle after the candles' has 3 columns of numbers, which doesnt seem to quite relate to a "lines/words" motif
so in short I could be misunderstanding your hint all around.

The document(s) have definitely been supplied and they are not the declaration of independance

Two things for the source document.
1/ Context
2/ The range of numbers? Familiar?

Ah-ha! I see it now!! ok, a sudoku hint, in kind is:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
did you see the text in white?
I dont have a solve fFor that puzzle yet, tho i do have something working fFor the sudoku .. .. which is to say I have a board, but ok now what?
avalix ... let's see.. how can i be abstract. uhm.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Have you looked into what the beale is and how it works? Do that fFirst. Good history lesson if naught else. then consider the fFirst column a sort of map, and the sceond and third columns specific instructions when you get there.
