ARGFest-o-Con '06 - Chicago, July 21st to 23rd !!

The other day, as rose and I were basking in the warm glow of Scrappy, Gupfee and imbri, the topic of ARGFest '06 came up. I had just assumed it was going to be in Chicago, being the runner-up to NYC in the polls and all, but realized there hadn't been a lot of discussion about it recently, so I really have no idea what the general consensus is these days. Or if people have any strong opinions about it. Or if they even care.

So I ask, oh ARG public, where should it be (and for that matter, when)? Chicago? Las Vegas? Winnipeg? Do we need to create another poll?

Discuss.

I put this in N&R so it would get the most face time, mods, feel free to move to somewhere more appropriate. And/or sticky it Smile

Added Chicago to subject Razz

ARGFest '06

I remember reading something here about this and that it had come up that the next ARGFest would possibly be held in Amsterdam.

I would love to vote for Chicago, but I realize that there are those of us who would like to have the next ARGFest a little bit closer to home. This is why I would much rather choose to have it held somewhere outside of the United States this time around.

Also, I wouldn't mind having it in Amsterdam. There are just some things that you can't get away with in the US that you can there (without going into specifics).

Maybe Chicago '07?

The Lesson of Vancouver:

Choose a city that's easy/cheap to get to. Frankly, this may be the most important criterion. Many people dropped out of Vancouver after pricing the tickets.

Choose a city that has independent reasons to visit (Orlando, Las Vegas, NYC). For me, getting stoned in Amsterdam would not qualify. You need a place with tourist potential as well as ARG-attractiveness.

I didn't know that Amsterdam wasn't a very touristy place. Isn't the "Ann Frank House" located in Amsterdam? There's a lot of history there.

And if you want to get specific, I would think that getting stoned would qualify as "ARG-attractiveness" since you happen to enter an "Alternate Reality". (I watch the history channel and it shows)

Amsterdam is very touristy with a lot of things to do and see

The biggest tourist attraction is the (18+ only)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

red light district

Further more there is canal boats, canal bikes, a gazillion of museums, architecture going back to the middle ages or even further to the roman times numerous churches a great park to walk around in (vondelpark)

and as museum highlight: rijksmuseum with the nightwatch (I believe oceans 12 dealt with that)

all and all a great city to choose for ARG-Fest

Amsterdam would be cool IF I had the money to fly over seas. Sadly I don't, and probably don't have the money to go to Argfest in any location, but such is life.

Is it true that US argers are in the minority?

I dunno, I say we take a look at the frappr to get a decent judge of where people are, then base the Fest-O-Con around that area.

It seems to me that most ARGers (that have added themselves to the Frappr) are either West or East coast US (mainly in the great lakes area, it would seem), followed by a dense UK population with sparse sprinklings of others around the world from Denmark, to Bahrain, to Hong Kong, to Aus.

So going off those numbers, Chicago would seem like a good choice. That said, I wouldn't mind a Canadian ARG-Fest-O-Con, so I think Winnipeg wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Just my $0.02

Chicago's fine. Las Vegas would be fine. Any major US city would probably be fine.

As much as I'd love to go to Europe, its way too expensive to do a 3-4 day run out there.

Perhaps a European ARGFest can be a concurrent experience for those who cannot come to the states (I believe that occurred this year after the NY event).

I am all for Chicago 2006, and the "Return to Vegas" in 2007.

One of the considerations that we should make, assuming a US/North American location is that it's not only cheap/easy to get to for those in the states, but that it's relatively cheap/easy to get to for the international crowd. NY was great for the UK crowd and a fair number of them were able to attend. The west coast is not quite as friendly for quick trips (flights that are twice as long and greater time difference) and neither are cities that don't have a fair number of international flights (forces higher ticket prices and/or multiple connections).

Chicago & NY are probably the best choices in that regard as they're major destinations and more northerly locations.

Even though I've been totally busy with school work and other fun stuff which I can't get into (Very Happy), I'd like to put my vote in for Chicago. I was really excited about the last ARG Fest, and was super bummed out that I couldn't attend myself. I was looking forward to meeting everyone. And if we have it in UK/Europe, there is no way I can afford that. No way. Even though I'd like to go back to Europe for a little, I just can't. Sorry UKers/Europeans.

So, my vote is for Chi-Town. The big Chicago.

No surprise, but I'll put my vote in for Chicago too.

My reasons:

* I live near there </obvious bias>

* I live near enough that I can help with some of the planning.

* There are three airports in the area to choose from - O'Hare, Midway and Gary-Chicago. (Gary-Chicago is technically in Indiana, but I'd be willing to offer some transportation to Chicago to those who decided to fly into Gary-Chicago since it's only a few expressway exits/three train stops from my house.)

* Besides all of the touristy things to do in Chicago, there's Great America, Milwaukee and even Bristol Rennaisance Faire within driving distance if we wanted a day trip.

ARGFest Amsterdam

I mentioned ARGFest Amsterdam as a possibility to consider. I was thinking of having a European based ARG get together after talking with Giskard. Also, he volunteered to do a good deal of the planning for it.

I didn't intend ARGFest Amsterdam to be a substitute for an event held in the US.

I think that Chicago could be good if locals are willing to organize it. I see Varin volunteered. Any others?

Also, we could do a game of Tombstone Poker there as they didn't get an event during Last Call Poker.

I would do Chicago in a heartbeat, and so would the Mrs. and possibly the tykes. Although, upon thinking about that, the tykes don't have much of a choice what they do.
