Just in response to the idea that this is a viral campaign designed to whip up interest in the game before its release - from IGN:

Game: Shadow of Colossus
Published by: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developed by: SCEI
Genre: Third-Person Adventure
Number of Players: 1
Release Date:
US: October 18, 2005
Japan: October 27, 2005
Europe: October 27, 2005

So the game's been out for over a week in Europe and Japan, and almost 3 weeks in the USA. Is the timing typical of a viral campaign? Should it continue after the game's release without any declaration of the connection? Or is the campaign aimed at boosting sales in the run-up to Christmas? Is it possible that the link between the 'Giants-sites' and the game will never be declared? Is this normal practice in viral marketing?

Cheers

Law of Five

Find a reliable site then, SotC hasn't been released in PAL and won't be until sometime next year.

Why did they wait until after the game had been released to start it? Why does it matter?

Fair point on the European release - this from Amazon.co.uk:

This item will be released on February 1, 2006. You may order it now and we will dispatch it to you when we receive it from our supplier. Please note that release dates are subject to change.

Still doesn't change the fact that the game's been out for weeks in the US and Japan, and I'm still not clear what the purpose of this putative viral campaign is - unless they want to boost UK sales 10 weeks from now?

Official Sony press release wrote:

Advertising Campaign For Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus will be highlighted in a dedicated national print, viral and online media campaign, supported with a strategy guide, promotional and retail support. Major retailers will be supporting these programs with Point-of-Purchase displays, demo disks and advertising.

To support Shadow of the Colossus, the online and print advertising campaign utilizes the theme of "toppling a Colossus". The campaign will reach millions of readers nationwide through placements in a wide variety of national consumer, gaming and men's lifestyle publications. The print campaign will begin in October and continue through December 2005. Print ads will run in publications such as Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, Game Informer, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Maxim, FHM, STUFF and more. The online campaign will begin in October and continue through December 2005. Online ads will run on outlets such as IGN, Gamespot, G4TV, IFILM, Sci-Fi Channel, Cartoon Network and more.

For the viral campaign, various efforts will be conducted including a unique video comedy series, available on Heavy.com featuring scenes from the game. The video series, titled "Dr. Philprah, Colossus Whisperer," is a parody on the main character in Shadow of the Colosuss, who is portrayed as a talk-show host.

The independent Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has rated Shadow of the Colossus "T" for "Teen." For more information about the ESRB, please visit www.esrb.org.

Highlight is mine...
Seems normal to me... I fthey're running the print campaign after the games release why shouldnt they run the viral stuff at the same time..?

Here's a piece of news for anyone who questioned whether the tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004, actually did uncover ancient relics and structures.

Take that, doubters.

Another factoid:

The Asian Tsunami occurred on Dec. 26, 2004.

The Bam Earthquake occurred on Dec. 26, 2003.

Is there a connection? And if so, should we be concerned about Dec. 26, 2005?

Quayle also revealed that an Arctic giant image/video that had been circulating on the Internet was actually fictional footage shot as a promotion for a new video game called Shadow of the Colossus. Yet, he believes there is currently a joint military operation underway to retrieve ancient artifacts related to Admiral Byrd's findings in the Arctic and the fake footage could have been used to cover any leaks

While I'm not yet willing to rule this out as an ARG (since there seems to be a lot of evidence stacked for it), it does seem to be rather misguided and meandering (moreso than other ARG's that I have watched). I also believe that giantology.typepad.com actually may have little or nothing to do with the ARG itself. Maybe it's just being handled poorly, but it doesn't seem to have much drive or motive. Hopefully it picks up before December 26 (since, judging by the dates suggested in the Sony press release, and the fact that it is the day after Christmas, that would be a logical end date).

Just my two cents. I'll still be following along.

Wait, this is a Sony production?

I'm out then... I'm boycotting Sony until they remove Rootkits from their Copy-Protected CDs

was fun while it lasted.. it doesn't seem to be gong anywhere anyway... and it had such promise.

Shadow of the Colossus looks like an amazing game. To me it is a benefit that it isn't an xbox360 game as the delivery of that system seems to be totally off schedule.

But where are we with the viral online campaign they mention? Has anything happened recently? /me goes back through the thread again

i'm going to say that this one crashed and burned, the videos got out and drummed up a little attention (even a mention on Coast to Coast AM) which is what they wanted, and that's it. they never continued Arkady's story, and never returned emails to those who sent mail to in-game characters. i wonder if it was SUPPOSED to be larger in scope and died, or if the marketing team just wanted a few viral videos and websites with no far reaching story

Rolling Eyes While I do agree that the rootkits are insanely stupid, it is rather stupid to blame ALL of Sony for it. Shadow of the Colossus and the Playstation 2 is run by Sony Computer Entertainment. Completely different from Sony's music division, run by different people, profitable ( Laughing ), etc. I mean, it's like boycotting DC Comics because you don't like something Time Warner did. Just because it's owned by the same people, doesn't mean they are all to blame.

It couldn't be a XB360 game any way, being run internally at Sony and all.

Law of Five: Who knows? The best guess would be that they wanted to capitalise on Christmas sales, but then there could be a number of other reasons.
