Only a partial transcript, as far as I got before I took off for Chatsworth. Anyone want to post the rest?

further proof that the dead characters don't really know what's going on. i got the impression that victor understands that we're alive though.

i thought about that... but if that were the case, then we couldn't have retrieved the hat, or found the alter, or played tombstone hold 'em. Lucky speaks to us as if we're alive and well in the real world, the website just acts as a gateway.

[SPEC]Johnny Deuces is a recent arrival. As far as he knows, everyone there is dead, just like he is. Y'know, dates of death and mortographies and all that. Victor, on the other hand, has been there much longer. He's had a chat or two with Lucky, and therefore has a better idea of the setup. Lucky's also shown Victor the pictures of us with his real hat in the real world. He knows we're out here, not in there.[/SPEC]

Upon reflection, I think it may be a barrier to keep 1) live characters from talking to dead ones; and 2) us from talking to most of the live characters.

It may be that you don't actually have to be dead (obviously in the game reality we're not dead: Lucky seems to know we're alive, and we're out doing real things in the real world like the live events and the hat tour) to play poker on the site, but the site itself has to think you're dead.

There are profiles on the site for living characters, but we never get to play poker with any character until they're dead.

Why?

In the game reality, this is (as far as I can tell) a real site on the real internet. The characters are, in the game reality, real people who, presumbly, use the internet.

For a while now, though, I've been wondering:

Lucy, as one of Lucky's heirs, should know about LCP -- it was in Lucky's will, right?

Robert knows about it:

And Lucy's never been curious enough to check it out? Her relationship with Lucky was so intertwined with poker that the two of them can't seem to stop using poker metaphors to talk about each other, and obviously she and Lucky were close, yet she's never bothered to check out the poker site he posthumously used almost all of his money to create?

Of course, if she had checked it out, it would have given her knowledge that, narratively speaking, she wasn't supposed to have had.

Similarly, I'm very touched by Corazon's grief and how much she misses Victor, just as I'm touched by his inability, immediately before his death, to come up with a suitable last verbal message that would describe his love for her.

So there's a certain poignant irony in the fact that, theoretically, Corazon could sit down at a computer, create a profile for herself (or log in using the one that's already there) and talk to Victor in a poker room.

The emotional impetus for Lucy to talk to Lucky may be less (I'm sure she would have appreciated some guidance when all the weirdness with the Gun started, but I don't see her visiting his grave and bursting, Phantom-of-the-Opera-style, into a rendition of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again") but again, other than the fact that it would more or less obviate the need for us, and therefore the game, why not?

Lucy could have talked to Kink, too, to find out why he killed Robert and for whom he was working.

Most of the characters like Corazon, however, wouldn't have any reason to know or care about Lucky Brown's poker site, which prevents that sort of thing from happening.

But theoretically, we could contact Corazon, right? We can't do it directly, as we don't have a phone number for her, but we have phone numbers for people who know her, like Kerry.

We could let her know that Victor sometimes shows up on this poker site.

(I'm not saying that we should, by the way, just that it's theoretically possible.)

And she could hop online and have a touching reunion with Victor.

Unless, of course, the site will only let you log on if it thinks you're dead. Which might be one of the reasons that all those live characters have profiles that note that they're alive: it prevents them from gaining knowledge that would destroy a narrative that relies on them not knowing things, and it might bring them face-to-face with their characterhood.

Anyway, just a theory as to why we're all "dead" according to the site.
