[POKER] Rewards & the Shape of the Game

I'd just like to congratulate ThaJinx on being the first to reach 501 quicklinks, and therefore receiving that red skull I so desire.

Woot!

It's also really cool to see some of the same names come up again and again in various areas of the game - you can see how the game is structured to play to peoples' various strengths, and not everyone is going to be good at everything. We see people who are able to be present at a moment's notice, finding cards, doing research, and typing quickly - a heady mix of trivia, history, common sense, and 3,000 WPM. There's the chip leaders who have become almost as familiar to me after a few weeks' time as some people I've seen posting at the unforums for months. The social ladder has changed up a bit, as the poker tables have evolved into various patterns and routines - barring the occasional grump or lurker, or language barriers, it's now become commonplace to immediately link everyone you're at the table with, as soon as you get there. The small favors have definitely been my personal favorite thing to do and observe in this game - seeing what people have discovered about themselves, and how well they can adapt abstract concepts into a respectful offering for those who have passed has been oddly comforting and life-affirming, in its own fashion.

The chip bonuses for these reward goals are one thing, but it is pretty damned fascinating to see this teeming mass of data coalesce into a somewhat competitive, lively, interesting poker community - as people scramble for that next character card, or come in breathlessly from the cold to post pictures of their Goth Training Missions.

Thanks much, Krystyn. Can't wait until you break through and grab a red skull for yourself Smile

I have to agree, there really is a good sense of balance to the way a person is able to actively participate in this game. The Social Ladder really has taken on an entirely separate life from the one it led in the first three weeks of the game, mostly because the strategy and approach towards it has changed as radically. I'm going to have to agree with you on the Small Favors being a favorite part of the game, far and above; on a basic level it's gotten me to explore Boise a little further regarding both its physical layout and its history, and - given some of the things I've had to deal with personally in the past year - they've sort of affirmed the measure of peace a person can strive to take following the death of a loved one.

I appreciate a game that can craft a system of play that "rewards" players by opening it up to multiple areas of talent. It's definitely a welcome spin on player recognition.

EDIT: Congrats, Krystyn! Told you you'd have it by day's end! Very Happy

Congratz to the both of you. *is so damned proud to even be on the social leaderboard* And your right, it does play to peoples strengths. As apparently I suck at online poker (though IRL, my friends fear me), and I know I'll never get a card, I can't shut my mouth at tables. So yay for being a jabbermouth. Heh.

Bahahah, Nos, I always consider you a welcome presence when I've seen you - it breaks up the monotony of "u suck," and "hehehhhhehhh krystin i am lookin down your dres".

The marriage proposals from Romania continue to be amusing, though.
