To put any fears at rest, yes I do have up-to-date antivirus software. Normally I wouldn't open a strange attachment, but this email was in my Hotmail account, and apparently hotmail automatically displays any jpg attachments after the body of the email. Yes, I did check the source to verify this. Hotmail currently claims to scan all attachments with a Trend Micro product.

Given that I have already opened the email, a hi-res photo of a passport smells more like ARG rather than spam.

Ok, so I sent a short ambiguous message back saying I'd received the original email, and asking if I could help. Shortly afterwards I received two nearly identical emails, this time with a huge bitmap of the passport with the address and next of kin details filled in. One from the original address, and another from "Bess Rossouw". However the messages refer to someone called Cheryl.

In the files above I have scanned and saved an ID a passport under a bitmap image and a jpeg image on a CD and attached it to this e-mail. Please notify me if you have received the e-mail at witbankSPLATpostnet.co.za. for attention Cheryl.

Thank you

Ann Griffin

I got some curious e-mails in the last month. At first I thought it was someone who sent it to the wrong address, but she replied and yesterday and today sent e-mails again.

The odd thing is I see no point in the e-mails. At all. But since I've used this address for other ARGs before, it could be related to one. If anyone has a bright idea on why it should or shouldn't be part of an ARG, let me know. Here are the e-mails, in the order I received them (with my replies in between):

First e-mail, received Oct 11
Topic: honking horns, not geese!
Quote:
Went to MEC on the week-end and purchased a compressed-air horn for
Pegasus. It's not really a Pegasus-like sound, but it's all they had.
It needs to be installed and calibrated, and I'll probably have to buy
some clamps or whatever (I think the whatevers are more expensive).
I'll bring the rig on Friday and maybe you could take a look at what's
involved. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks for sharing your Friday evening with me. I thoroughly
enjoyed myself. Talk/write to you later. ANN

Quote:
Some questions come to mind.
What is MEC?
What is a Pegasus-like sound?
What did we do on Friday evening?
Who are you?
Sincerely,
schapin

Second e-mail, received Oct 12
Topic: FAQ or IFAQ
Quote:
The answers to your questions are, in order:
1) Mountain Equipment Co-op.
2) that of a flying horse (never mind the why of how it's flying).
3) daintily stuphphed cryptic cross-words with smoked salmon, chopped
green onions and capers (the kind you eat, not the kind you do).
4) "I'm not really sure.", to quote Avivah when Sasha asked, referring
to me) "Where did we get her?'.

If you don't like these answers, please reapply, and include 389 new
references.

Quote:
The answers are interesting, to say the least. You have a flying horse, now including a horn? Mighty impressive.
Salmon is definitely my kind of fish, although I seem to run into trouts more often.
And since the answer to who you are is interesting, yet not very informative, I wonder how you know me.

Third e-mail, Nov 5
Topic: Things various and sundry
Quote:
1] No news yet on camera. I'll phone during the week - I'm not sure the
appropriate person works week-ends.

2] Help! I'm gasping for air. How much does a decent tire pump cost?
Should I look at learning how to re-charging the canister myself?

3] What would happen if we loaded Mac on my computer ( besides a loud
explosion and a crisis of conscience?)

4] as ever, your loving Godmother (oh, cut it out) ANN

Quote:
Seriously, I'm missing something here. Who are you?

Fourth and last e-mail, today
Topic: More all and sundry
Quote:
Who am I? No one is really sure. Cogito ergo sum, or cognito ergo dim
sum. Whatever.

Existentially, I'm real, or at least I'm fairly sure I am. Unfairly,
it's hard to tell because I have so much grey hair.

Morally, I'm either depraved or deprived, the only difference is a mere
key-stroke. Physically, I'm substantial, although less so than ten
years ago.

Grammatically, I am bereft, one died before I was born and thus was
spared all this nonsense. The other departed this world in February,
1945, when I was still small and cuddly and the apple of her eye. At
least I wasn't egg on her face, although I might have soiled myself and
her on occasion.

My identity is still undetermined or indeterminate, but that is one of
the great mysteries of lif.

As ever, your loving and devoted (and probably commitable) God-mother,
ANN.

Lysithea,

In regards to your emails received, I would delete all of it from your PC. My thinking is that this is one of two things:

1) a Legitimate ARG thing - in which case, you're going to be fine, as the thing is documented here for all of us to work with.

2) More than a dangerous scam - Let's say this isn't an ARG. Then you have two choices now... it's either a real passport image or not. If it's not, then I'd worry about the purposes of this image beyonda simple mistake. (especially sent twice...) If it IS a real passport, then I'd be concerned if say, someone died or escaped, or what have you using that passport, because now you could be officially linked to this, by having the information on your computer, ya know? I know it's unbelievably small in terms of possibility, but I'd still delete it and peek over my shoulders for a couple weeks to be sure. Smile

Concering those mails, how about those odd ones I got on gmail?
My freinds out a link to a somewhat scary thing from a .hack place..and well, after a few mins, the music started all staticy and the bg went inverted. then, they left a contact info. So I replyd to it, thinking, oh, whats the harm. Now it says I have to check here before nov 30 or some thing will happen.
To quote: "Tonight, it begins again. Find the Truth - Andrew's time is almost up. " Anyone have any Idea about this? It even gave me a link to another one of the .hack things, this time, the person was describing fate, and someone was also talking...

out of curiosity I called the phone number on the passport through skype. It goes straight to voice mail, with a male voice saying something I couldn't make out at the start.

I think perhaps we can color you welcome, instead. Smile

The email addresses, AIM/MSN handles, etc. of people who hang around here tend to become known to other people who hang around here, and so when people who hang around here decide to launch a game, they sometimes use that information to do so.

Each one was sent to a different gmail account. I hope this helps someone, somewhere, make sense of it. Wink

Oh, and FemmeFatal, if you're interested in .hack, here would be a good place to start.
