Well, let's talk about what we already know, since there appears, at this time to be a limited amount of content, and according to the WIRED article, it won't really start until January, giving us some lead time. Smile

Dude, throw me a bone - at least put up some shirts that don't make me look like every other kid on Myspace these days.

I don't know, they look to me like they have a pleasant Urban Outfitters vibe. I only get to wear jeans and t-shirts about twice a month, but while the designs aren't too outre (they'd have to keep them mainstream enough to appeal to a mass market), they're unusual enough that I can see people remarking on them, which gives you the chance to explain that your shirt is a puzzle. Very Happy

That said, the fact that the distribution seems to be almost exclusively limited to the coasts presents something of a dilemma for those of us more centrally located who'd love a shirt.

I'm emailing the director of sales to find out if there are plans to make it possible to order from the website.

If there are no such plans, however, those of us in the middle of the continent who'd like to purchase the clothing may have to beg the assistance of our more fortuitously-located ARGer friends. Smile

From part of 4orty2wo's webpage explaining "how we do it" - a couple of the steps they take to make a campaign:

Kick-start the campaign with a core group of loyalists

I think, once again, we are the early adopters or the core group of loyalists, not the main audience for the game. Note: I view this as a high compliment, we already understand ARGs and their potential, so we provide a base for them to build upon in a campaign

Agreed. And it appears that they are not trying to be stealthy about this or hide their identity at all, which I think might mean they're counting on a certain amount of "brand loyalty" from ARGers, as well as the reputation they've earned with their previous ARGs, especially ILB.

Hopefully Poor Richard will be a semi-real band (I'm thinking of the DJ in Art of The Heist, his name escapes me) with decent music. Maybe one day it will be possible to make an ARG Music playlist

As it so happens, Poor Richard's (love it! An ARG with music, clothes and...possibly...Ben Franklin references!? Wink) website links to PureVolume, which Google describes as:

Google wrote:
PureVolume is the place for rising artists to host their mp3s and get exposure.
We showcase unsigned artists, independent labels, and major label artists.

They have quite a few artists listed.

As of yet, a search on the site for "Poor Richard" gets you only poor richard's rose parade, which, upon examination, is clearly not the same band.

However, I assume their website links to PureVolume because there will be music there. Smile

PureVolume has its own forums, so I registered there just in case. Poor Richard's website also has a mailing list. They link to MySpace as well, but just to the general site.

Anyway, returning to what we already know:

1) There's a band called Poor Richard.

They describe themselves thusly:

Quote:
Poor Richard started with the music.

It grew into friendship, fighting, taxes, touring, fans, lawyers, labels, insurrection, and outright war. But the music came first.

Chances are you're reading this because you heard a story about a band that had the guts to stand up to its label and the whole studio system. And that's great. We're proud of that, even if it turns out that by the time you're reading this we've been sent to jail for daring to sell our own songs. HeyŃa working class hero is something to be.

But the music came first. It's truer than all that other stuff.

Don't look at us, or what we did, or even what we believe. Listen to the songs. That's who we are at our best.

2) The band has five members.

Adam (Lead Guitar)

Quote:
Technically, Adam is a genius. That doesn't impress me very much. I've known lots of players with technique. Usually they're liars. I should know. I used to be one. Adam isn't like that. He is the most honest musician I've ever heard.

People pretend to play all the time. I've heard international superstars fake their way through the Pathetique or the Late Quartets.

Adam never pretends.

Maddy (Vocals, Bass)

Quote:
True Story: we were playing this little dive in the early days, even before the Almanac EP. Maddy is hot. After the set, this guy will not stop hitting on her. She gets a lot of that and she's good at dealing with it, but this guy will NOT give up. I happen to turn around just to see him kind of half-push her against a wall. I'm about to go over there and hand him his ass when Sam grabs me and says, "Watch."

Maddy grabs this guy's beer bottle and smacks it against the wall. Glass just EXPLODES and the bar gets real quiet and suddenly she's holding the broken beer bottle against the crotch of this guy's jeans and she says, "I want you to get the hell out of here right now, or I WILL take your Mr. Wiggly home in my purse tonight."

- by Adam

Jeff (Rhythm Guitar)

Quote:
Don't let the modest thing fool you, this guy has an ego the size of a blimp. The last thing we need on this site is some chick gushing over him. OK Jeff—show's over. Go read someone else's blurb. Skip the next paragraph.

(So obviously he writes like a friggin angel, and if I had to choose between giving up this music and going to hell, I'd go to hell. In a heartbeat.)

- by Maddy

Sam (Percussion)

Quote:
Shut up and play.

- by Sam

How like a percussionist. Razz

Abby (Keyboards)

Quote:
Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who lived surrounded by good and beautiful things in a slender tower made of glass. One particular night a ragged peasant came to beg at the castle door, and the king, not wanting to encourage that sort of thing, had the guards chase him off. It turned out the beggar was not a peasant at all, but a wicked fairy, who avenged himself by putting a curse on the princess so that she would see as most beautiful that which was actually ugliest of all.

The next day a pack of dirty troubadors wandered into the castle. Under the terrible fairy's curse, the Princess fell in love with this motley crew, and ran away with them that very night. Of course the vagabonds soon saw what had happened, and knew the right and noble thing to do would be to break the spell and return the princess to her home.

But being a greedy, heartless lot, we kept her instead.

- by Jeff

The band's albums, thus far, are:

Quote:
2000 Broken Halo EP. "Arson for Beginners", "Broken Halo", "Indiglo", "Overcast"

2001 The first album, Almanac.

2002 West coast tour; Luminous sessions.

2003 Luminous released.

2) They had a concert tour planned on the West Coast from January 26 - February 9, 2006. All those dates have been cancelled.

3) They have a journal/blog and a news section maintained by someone named "Lyn."

4) On December 10, 2004, Lyn posted to the news section, announcing that Poor Richard had won its lawsuit against "G3." The court decided that G3 had breached its contract, and annulled its right of first refusal to Poor Richard's subsequent work. It is yet to be determined whether Poor Richard can get the rights to their previous work in order to sell it on the website, which is apparently their intention.

5) On December 25, 2004, Lyn posted to the news section, explaining that the band's manager had been killed in "a sorry stupid accident."

6) On December 27, 2004, Lyn posted that due to the death of the band's manager they would be cancelling their tour.

7) The FBI apparently thinks Lyn killed the manager.

Cool On July 7, 2005, Allie takes over maintaining the site in place of Lyn, who is "hiding out" in "Zimbabwe or Portugal."

Quote:
Also on her computer I found something truly valuable, her first-hand account of the history of the band. I thought I would publish it in installments while we all wait for the next project from this stupendously talented group

The history is found here.

9) Clicking the "merch" link on the band's site takes you to Edoc Laundry.

10) We are given the following contact information:

Poor Richard: poorrichard (at -- ) poorrichardband.com
Management -- Al Levine: alex (at -- ) poorrichardmusic.com
Publicist -- Lori Shell: Lori (at --) poorrichardmusic.com

I'm reasonably certain I've missed plenty, but there's a start.

I'd like to believe this is a flattering reference to that one kid with the bee sign, but there genuinely is a band called G3, at least one with a revolving touring lineup. From the website:

G3's 2005 lineup:
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
John Petrucci

Sounds like Poor Richard is in pretty good company.

Hmmm... mistake or clue or did I miss something?

From "Band Manager killed":
Quote:
Al Levine died yesterday.

From "Tour Cancelled":
Quote:
Due to the tragic death of Poor Richard's longtime manager, Alex Hampton...

If one doesn't magically spring up near St. Louis, I would need some purchasing aid as well, as I'm sure a lot of people will.

I know I will. I live near Boston, but I haven't seen anything for Mass yet. Closest was NY I believe.

And here I was complaining that the closest location is forty whole blocks from here. I guess inconvenience is all relative.

Anybody think the file names in the images/images directory mean anything (i.e., do they decipher)? Or should I/we be pretending they don't exist Smile ?
