"My visit to Uncle Sanjean"

Had such a nice weekend - great night of poker on Saturday night, woke up about midday on Sunday which was just about right because I'd arranged to go for afternoon tea with my aunt and uncle in the Old Town. It was one of those clear, bright autumn days, so the half-hour walk from Foreman Station was a real pleasure. I love this city, particularly on beautiful days like that! And, even better, Aunty Annaliese had made her specialty honey and almond cake, yum yum.

After catching up on family news - I told them about Scarlett's latest plans to rescue small furry creatures in the mountains and they told me about my cousin Tavit and his archaeological expeditions to the south; we certainly seem to be an adventurous family - I asked my uncle about the "Third Power" symbol. He seemed surprised to hear it described like that; as far as he knew it dated back to the original builder of the house, Anthony Granier.

The house has been in my family for generations, but it was actually built by Granier, who gave it to Vianne Adamek when she retired as Master of the Academy. Apparently the two were very close; anyway, I think very wealthy important people make more of a habit of giving each other houses as presents than normal people do. The house has been passed down in my family ever since, going to the eldest child every time, so my uncle got it not my mother.

Uncle Sanjean was delighted to show me the "Granier mark", as he called it. He told me that he often points it out when schoolchildren come to tour the house. He remembered Aiko coming to see it, photographing it from different angles for some project she was working on. It's certainly very striking; it's carved in very heavy relief in both the floor and ceiling of the great hall on the east side of the house. On the ceiling, it's worked in polished wood, very intricately done, and on the floor, it stretches across three flagstones. Still, despite the size and the intricacy of the carving it's the same pattern as in Lencival's book, the same three interlocking squares.

So, now, this got me thinking. Because there does seem to be some kind of connection. Lencival describes a "third power" symbol, and says that Anthony Granier belonged to this group. And now I find that same symbol in my Uncle's house described as the "Granier mark". Now, maybe Lencival just went on a tour of the Adamek home when he was a child, saw the Granier mark and made up the phrase "third power" to go with it. But it made me think that perhaps I could do worse than investigate Anthony Granier a bit more.

Sunday night I had dinner with Kurt. He was still moaning about some girl who he'd gone on a date with last weekend, but who hadn't been interested in seeing him again. He thinks maybe he said something wrong, but he can't work out what. He was trying to explain to me how she'd gone a bit cold when he started telling her about our work deciphering the book. Now, if you ask me, discussing spectroscopic analysis perhaps isn't the best idea for chat on a first date, but Kurt doesn't seem to quite see it like that. I don't know, he can be really funny, but somehow has trouble showing it in a date-type situation. Anyway, the point of all this is that what sparked off the disastrous conversation with the girl was that Kurt spotted an exhibit in the library that reminded him of the Lencival book: the diary of Anthony Granier! This is rather exciting; it's been in sealed archives for a long time now, so hasn't been part of the study of the period. I can't help feeling it might be interesting to get my hands on.

So, this afternoon I popped down to the museum to see if I could arrange an after-hours viewing of the Granier diary with all my spiffy Academy-librarian privileges. I know you'll believe me when I say that I smiled, I was charming and persuasive, I brought all my force of personality to bear but to no avail. The book is under very heavy protection because of the protesting, and because it's such a valuable resource to begin with. The museum staff were very apologetic, but said that they could only allow access to published and credentialed researchers. I certainly don't have a book to my name. So, I think I'm stumped, unless you have any ideas.

Ladies and gentlemen, it seems we now have the reason we were given the Seaside Press website. I bet we have to pick one of the authors on the site and have Violet meet up with them, bringing them in on the hunt

I emailed Violet about the Kohler book signings, which seems to be the most likely route.

Seaside emails just came back as the auto-responses.

I concur. A little too convient. We need to hook up one of the authors and Violet to conduct a little Mission impossible goodness.

Yup, I agree with all of the above; Hook Violet up with one of the authors and watch them create an elaborate scheme to get hold of 'The Grainer Diary'.

On a side-note, does Violet know about what happened at 3P MOLE (mole, mole, moleymoleymoley... Laughing ) day?

Was wondering where she's been. Smile

Definitely sounds like a good course of action, especially going with Kohler. Of course, alternate contacts would be a good idea. If Kohler's a bust or proves someone we wouldn't want along with us, I would recommend someone from the Social Sciences branch in the Academy. Which gives us Plans B through D who might have the very credentials we need:

Margaret Wildwood (chair)
Silas Andoriam (SF)
Ahuva Qui (SF)

Of course, I doubt the specialized senior fellows would be able to do much.
My guess is likely Kohler, maybe Wildwood, and after that, I'm stumped. A book is as good as a lecture or senior thesis, no?

Just putting it out there.

EDIT: Never could get 'recommend' right off the top of my head.

Still waiting for the word "Kurt" to be dropped into the plan. He always is Very Happy I agree with the above posts. (Perhaps if it all goes wrong we can get Kurt to simply steal the book)

Hmm..what with the extremely high security apparently in place, I don't think Kurt would be much use here... Anyway, once she's in the museum with the diary, she can just take pictures of the important parts, surely?
How do you guys suppose she should convince a published person to go with her to the museum to check the diary out? I don't think her emailing just a random published researcher for help is going to help... especially if she doesn't know the person in question...

Couldn't she ask Daddy to pull some strings?

She'll have to meet him. Smile. Bat her eyes. "Oh, I wish I could learn more about Granier, but they won't let me read his marvy diary. If only I knew a big, strong, published researcher who would help me out!" Very Happy

Not really Violet's style, of course, but it wasn't exactly Kurt's style to join a cult, either. Laughing You gotta do what you gotta do.

Or, hey. This writer could turn out to have a common interest in Granier, for all we know.

EDIT: Or, feh. Is our author in question a female? Razz Okay, plan B. Plan A isn't 100% scratched yet... gotta measure the ego once we get there. Laughing

If only that wouldn't blow the secrecy of our investigation sky-high.

We would need to formulate one helluva cover story to be looking at that book while keeping Sente in the dark. Even the tiniest hole in it could ruin everything; unless someone has a college degree in Lying & Alibies, I don't think it's going to happen.

Kohler is still best-bet; she could be "writing the sequel" to Faces of the Cube.

I wonder what would happen if Violet did just go and ask Sente...

"Daddy, can I go look at the off-limits diary of a historical figure?"
"Why?"
"No reason..."
"OK, pumpkin, whatever you say."

Laughing

I think we may have to take the recent article in the sentinel into account, couldn't she just tell sente that she wanted to read up on family history, and she came accross anthony granier, I don't see any holes in this, but it seems too simple. Confused

also, could someone give me a trout, I skipped lunch today and am reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaly hungry.

Now, I realize that Sente is looking shadier and shadier as time passes, but wasn't the Cube Retrieval Team his idea in the first place? Hell, why don't we ask him ourselves? Get a message to him that we think Granier's diary may hold crucial information, and ask him to arrange for a CRT member (i.e. Kurt) to have a look. If he says it can't be done he looks even shadier (since as Master of the Academy he of all people should be able to arrange access) and we can still try to get to it via one of the Seaside authors.

To e-mail sente don't we have to go through the assistant?

also, I'm all for informing sente, he's never went wrong before( to my knowledge) I've never stopped trusting him and I can't see why most people don't, also he's not exactly one of those politicians who just do what their people want and ignore the truth, is he, he doesn't seem like the kind of person who would go blabbing! Smile

GO SENTE
