[UPDATE] Seaside Press - 24 Nov 2005

Small update in the submission text...

http://www.seaside-press.com/submit.html

Quote:
Due to the unique nature of the Earth-Perplex City link all work submitted to Seaside Press from Earth must be placed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5 deed. We do not intend to sell any books on Earth, and regret that we cannot offer Earth authors any payment for their work. However, we have teamed up with Mind Candy to offer all accepted Earth contributors a free print copy of their submissions.

If you are interested in submitting a manuscript, please contact Ellen Moriyama at emoriyamaSPLATseaside-press.com

They're only interested in books, not short stories. Bah

Thank you for your interest in Seaside Press. We are very enthusiastic about working with Earth authors such as yourself. However, as stated in our publishing guidelines: "We are unable to consider any unsolicited proposal which does not include a complete manuscript, as well as a one-page synopsis of the material." In addition, we are only accepting book length works.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Yours sincerely,
Ellen Moriyama

[slightly OOG perspective] I wonder if they seriously expect a full book to be written for the sake of a game, or if it's simply there to seem more authentic, or discourage the e-mails they've been getting with short stories? It'd be interesting if someone really did submit a book, though.

I took that to mean they weren't *really* accepting anything, which is a shame as I expected them to put stories/longish articles on the seapress website.

All those who have, or want to submit short stories, could put them all together as a book of short stories.

Not a bad idea-I think we need about 20 (assuming they are approx 2 pages of a word document long), I have two. If any one wants to email me theirs to collate them feel free.

I asked for more detailed guidelines for submission. I also asked if they would consider a calendar because I would love to own an argish calendar with a new puzzle challenge each month. Smile

Thank you for your enquiry. The minimum length of our manuscripts is 40-50,000 words; roughly the length of a short book. While the occasional simple black-and-white diagram is possible, we are not looking to publish illustrated books or calendars. In terms of deadline, we would like to publish a work from Earth as soon as possible - ideally in the next few weeks, so that we can have the book ready for sale before the main winter holidays (or Christmas, as I believe it's called by some on Earth)!

I hope I have been able to answer your questions, and if you would like to know more, please do not hesitate to ask.

Yours sincerely,
Ellen Moriyama

I think they are serious about accepting a long enough manuscript to publish. For the record, the autoresponder states that submissions should be made in text format.

Thank you again for your interest in working with Seaside Press.

This prompts me to get to crackin' on a concept I have had: An RPG style game module built and run in the Perplex City world. It probably fFails in the "Earthology" requisite, but I do believe I wish to engage in such a project. (world's fFirst ARG RPG, even) I would guess, however, they are hoping to publish a NaNoWriMo book.

I wacked an email off to them after the 'rejection' being as vague as possible asking them if they could help a 'friend' of mine read 'a book in the museum to assist me in a book I had half finished about the relationship between Earth and perplex city customs. No luck really.

Quote:
Dear Chris,

Unfortunately there is little we can do to help you with the Academy Museum since they are notoriously strict on giving access to the public. I understand that the reason behind their policy of only allowing published researchers in is to dissuade casual or frivolous inquiries, and a half-finished manuscript simply wouldn't do.

If the manuscript were completed, and it was published in Perplex City, then we could certainly credit your friend as co-author or research assistant. Naturally, we would then be happy to help you with approaching the museum for access to this book.

Yours sincerely,
Ellen Moriyama

So, according to Violet's latest post on her blog, we all have to get together and write a book for Seaside Press, so that she can be the editor, which will give her the necessary cover to get access to Granier's diary.
So, everyone get your typewriters out and get cracking Very Happy
