[Star set] #115 Age of Sente

Ok card is worth 29 points and the author is Anna

Text says...

Several of the local schools in Perplex city take their children to the Academy for an annual guided tour. The teachers hope some of the magic from the hallowed institution will rub off on the youngsters and improve their puzzle setting and solving skills.

By a stroke of luck this group bumped into the Master of the Academy during a recent tour

Too young to know any better, one of the children asked Sente how old he was.

(This bit of the text is highlighted yellow)
If to my age there added be,
One half, one third, and three times three;
Six score and ten the sum you'll see,
Pray find out what my age may be.
(end of highlight)

None of the children could solve the riddle before Sente disappeared down the corridor.

Can you figure out his age?

end of text. Very Happy

Ill put the scan up later!

I hope my maths is holding up Surprised, but I think it's

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
66.

As a check: 66 + 33 + 22 + 9 = (6*20) + 10

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I *think* its a half and a third of the actual age, not half and a third of 100.

Half of 66 = 33

Third of 66 = 22

At the risk of seeming stupid, how do you work that out backwards?

i.e. how do you get from 130 back to 66?

I solved it myself but can't remember how.

Probably the easiest way is with a little algebra.
Sente is essentially saying "x + x/2 + x/3 + 9 = 130". That's not a hard equation to solve.

It's basic algebra: x is the unknown, in this case Sente's age..
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

So we have the words:

If to my age
(x) there added be,
One half
(x divided by 2, ASCII that's x/2), one third (x/3), and three times three; (9)
Six score and ten the sum you'll see, (130)
Pray find out what my age may be.

So we have:

x + x/2 + x/3 + 9 = 130

Now we want to make all the x's on one side, so we take 9 from both sides

x + x/2 + x/3 = 130 - 9

x + x/2 + x/3 = 121

Now just to get plain x's, turn everything into a fraction and find the lowest common denominator

x/1 + x/2 +x/3 = 121/1

LCD = 6

6x/6 + 3x/6 +2x/6 = 726/6

11x/6 = 726/6

We can cancel out the sixes

11x = 726

x = 726/11

x = 66

Easy!

So:

3*x = 726
