#177 - Purple - Consider a Spherical World - Star set

Designed by Kurt worth 45 points.

Text:

I've always been fascinated by equations and how deceptively powerful they are in solving problems like this one.

Imagine you tied a rope around the Earth's equator and then you cut it and added 1M to its length.

If you could somehow suspend the rope above the ground so that it floated like a ring around the planet, how big would the gap be between the rope and the ground?

Nightingale doesn't own a scanner so can't post a piccie. She's very sorry.

(edit: corrected card number. GuyP)

Ooh, I know this one - it is surprisingly great.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The answer is actually independent of the radius of the sphere around which the rope runs. This means that it is the same answer as the difference between a rope of zero length and one of 1m length, i.e. it is the radius of a circle with circumference 1m, i.e. it is 1m divided by 2pi, i.e it is approximately

15.92 cm

I worked it out the long way, finding the circumference of the earth, working out the differences etc. But I forgot I was using C=Pi*d, and typed an answer twice the size it should have been.

Probably time for me to get some sleep Smile
