[circle set] #016 XXX

Ok card is worth 4 points here and it's by the lovely Tippy.

text reads as follows..

The other day Caine and I were playing 3D tic-tac-toe during a particularly boring Academy lecture. To rest our brains a little we switched to a few games of traditional tic-tac-toe. After 17 straight draws in a row I caught Caine napping* and won this game comfortably.

I'm X. where are the two spaces I can play next to guarantee the win?

*to be fair he was also trying to compose the lyrics to a new song he was working on at the same time.

end of text...

3D tic-tac-toe???? ouch!

Here is the scan of the front, the back is just the hint line backing.

well, considering she's "x"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
bottom center and bottom right would be the two options

just realized it does say that's she's "x" on the card

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

If I'm not mistaken, either of the two spaces left on the bottom row would guarantee her a win.

I thought Tippy and Caine were classed as members of staff. Why where they in lectures anyway??

just thought I'd mention that although you can also solve this tic tac toe puzzle by placing an X in bottom middle, and then another X top middle, the solve tells me that it doesn't accept it as a viable option.

basically there are two ways you can solve this card, but only one is accepted.

I think that the key phrase in the question here is "guarantee the win" -

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
if Tippy is playing next and places her X in the bottom middle or bottom right space, Caine can only block one of her attempts to get three in a row. If you were to play top middle, Caine simply plays the bottom middle next round (and vice versa) and the game ends in another draw.

Let's see if I can do spoilers... *gives it a go*

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

If you play bottom middle first, then Caine has two options to try to block with next - top middle, or bottom right, he could pick either.

Then to guarantee the win, Tippy can play which ever one Caine did not.

Either way, Tippy has to play bottom middle next, but depending on where Caine plays after that, there are two viable options to end the game. But only one is accepted to get the points.
[/spoiler]

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The answer is bottom middle because of what you said, but the bottom right comes from the fact that she can place an x there and caine can block either bottom middle or top left but not both.
So...

bottom middle=gauranteed win
bottom right=gauranteed win

Exactly what Juxta said but I hope it's clarified

Anyone else note the emboldened text on this card? Doesn't seem to spell anything of note to me, but anyone else had any thoughts?
