I've heard the term "Bleeding Edge" to imply that a technology is newer or more advanced than "Cutting Edge"

Ok, here's my next series of communication with Davina!

After here email, I tried to send her another friendly one, with an inquiry about what sort of drawbacks she was talking about.

Quote:
Ms. Bronco,

Thanks for the congrats! Being out of school is interesting. I did a tour with Americorps NCCC (sort of a domestic peace corps) and now I have to set upon that dreaded task - "finding a real job." Scary, hunh? Wink

So, you mentioned in your email that even with the amazing benifits of the work your doing that there are drawbacks. I agree that for every good thing, there is a drawback or a price as well. I'm just curious, what kind of drawbacks were you talking about? What sort exist in your work?

Sincerely,

Andrew Gastaldo

I tried to kinda be subtle.. but my interpersonal communication skills aint the best. I wasnt able to get anything too important seeming out of her. This was her reply:

Quote:
Dear Andrew,

Working with Americorps must have been very exciting and rewarding! I've always wanted to do something like that on a national level. There is no better feeling than helping those in need. I guess that's why I try to do as much as I can while here on the station. Our population is, of course, relatively low, but I still try to help as much as I can. I've set up art classes and I try to plan as many community-based events as I can. Like for Thanksgiving I've set up a "family dinner" in the cafeteria for those who don't have family on the station.

As for you finding a "real job", it shouldn't be that hard, right? With your degree and working for Americorps, you should be a pretty good catch for employers!

Drawbacks? Oops, I guess I'm not really supposed to be talking about any drawbacks about being on the station. Sometimes those sorts of things just slip out Wink My father would not be pleased, I can almost hear him now "Davina, you of all people should know the importance of presenting the positive aspects of the station to the public. After all the work we've done... blah, blah, blah". But it's not like you're the editor of Time Magazine or anything!

Seriously though, I guess the drawbacks of living on the station aren't all that bad. The biggest headache is the travel time down to Earth. It's about a five day trip one way. Of course, when you do decide to make the trip down you have to plan way ahead since the elevator only arrives a few times a month. Many of the people here don't leave the station at all except for the periods that are medically required. Personally, I try to get down there as often as I can. Luckily, I have an in with the owner of this place so I can get as much time off work as I want. Wink

Another drawback? No dating. Space station life isn't a very good setting for meeting a wide variety of new people. With such a small population on the station so far, dating opportunities are few and far between. A few other people seem to have more luck than I do... there's even been a wedding already!

Wow, I'm really going on and on... Sorry, I'm still getting used to being able to talk to people so openly about this!

Davina

Nothing too big that I noticed in this. However, she is startign to warm up wot me, so I'll definatly keep this penpalling going, perhaps it'll bear fruit as time progresses.

Wow, good work Dionysus (you really are good with the ladies, huh Laughing ). When orbiconcorp.com was hacked, I sent an email to their IT Director, Jonathan Reinhardt to let him know about it (and to express my interest in Orbicon's work). I just received the following reply from Davina Bronco:
Quote:
Mr. Reinhardt has recently decided to retire from his position at Orbicon Corporation. Until we find a suitable replacement Director, I will be handling some of Mr. Reinhardt's duties.

Thank you for the information about our recent website problems. Keep an eye on the site for more updates on our projects!

Sincerely,

Davina Bronco

Interestingly enough, his profile has also been removed from the "About Us" page on their site. I wonder why he stepped down. Could he possibly have been fired because the security of their site was comprimised? Contiplating sending a follow up letter, just as soon as I can figure out how to word it.

hmm, maybe that's why the orbicon site was hacked... I mean, it's possible that Reinhardt was fired after the site was comprimised, or maybe he was fired and then leaked details of the site's security to CARTS. Maybe he was fired because he was found to be cooperating with the anti-orbicon groups, and that's how these group obtained details about orbicon's activities... And after he was fired, suddenly the site is hacked...

I don't know, really just speculating, but there definitely seems to be a connection between his departure from orbicon and the sudden hacking.

Maybe this will go somewhere... we might hear more about Reinhardt in the future...

@camdman
Only flaw in that logic is that Reinhardt was fired after the site was already hacked. I guess the other way around makes more sense. And yes, I believe Reinhardt will play an important role later on.

Do we know that for sure, though? All the message said was that "Mr. Reinhardt has recently decided to retire from his position at Orbicon Corporation."
For all we know, he could've left before the hacking, and they didn't get a chance to remove his profile until afterwards. I agree this will probably play out later. This is all good speculation, but I'd hate to see us jump to any conlusions without more details. In my continuous dig for more info, I just sent the following reply to the message from Davina:
Quote:
Davina,
Sorry to hear Mr. Reinhard has resigned. However, I currently work in the IT field, and have recently been looking to expand my horizons. If you are in the process of looking for a replacement IT director, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my interest in applying for the position. Could you please send me any details on the application process? If possible, I'd also be interested in any information as to why the previous director decided to leave. I know specific details may be confidential, but any information you could provide would be helpful in my decision to apply.

Thank You,
John Spartan

We'll see if this yeilds any more info

[UPDATE] Just received the following reply from Davina:
Quote:
John,

If you are still interested in applying for the IS Director position, I'd be happy to forward your resume to the appropriate people here at Orbicon. I'm not sure when they will officially post the position, but it couldn't hurt to send in a resume ahead of time, right? I can't really tell you much about why the last IS Director is no longer with us as that information is confidential. I can tell you that in order to work up here you will have to have a full medical checkup and background check done, so make sure everything is in order in that regard Wink

Miss Davina Bronco

Not sure if I should send her a resume, but this otherwise seems like a dead end. Confused

Right. It could be possible that they didn't remove him from the profile until the hack was over. Sorry, if I sounded dismissive about it, camdman. Smile

My email to Davina:

Dear Ms. Bronco,

Hello! First of all, allow me to congratulate you on being named Employee of the Month at Orbicon! As a passionate space enthusiast, I have been eagerly following Orbicon's progress into the stars. I must say that merely reading about Orbicon's technological developments is very exhilarating! I cannot imagine what it must be like being part the next 'giant leap for mankind', to quote the great Mr. Armstrong.

I also wish to express my sympathy regarding the recent attack on your website. It must be difficult being responsible for Public Relations at a company that seems to have so many organizations against its efforts! I am, of course, in total support of the space elevator concept. But I'm curious as to your main response(s) to individuals and groups that oppose Orbicon's work? I have friends that raise issues of public safety and respect for nature as arguments against your company's work. I could use a little professional ammo in my arguments, if you know what I mean.

Thank you for your time and congratulations!

Caspian

PS: What sort of art do you teach on the space station? I've always been very fond of Monet, but I suppose Van Gogh's The Starry Night must be popular up there. ;o)

Her reply:

Caspian,

It's wonderful to hear from a fellow space enthusiast! It is quite exciting to be a part of such a 'giant leap' as you called it. It almost feels surreal at times, like I'm in some sort of sci-fi space dream or an episode of Star Trek. Wink

We knew that there would be some opposition to the space station and elevator. It happens with every major advancement in the scientific community. It comes with the territory. Unfortunately, there will always be people who want things to stay the same. Luckily, the majority of people will see the wonderful possibilities Orbicon's space station and elevator present.

As for some of the protest groups that have been popping up, we're not too concerned. Fringe groups such as the Path Back to Eden and the Inept will come and go. They rely on faulty science, uninformed 'expert' opinions and questionable tactics to make their points. Just take a look at the Inept's site. Can you believe some of the stuff they say? I mean, why would we invade anyone's home? That's just silly! And the quotes they claim come from Orbicon are completely taken out of context! I certainly hope these friends you speak of don't take what these groups say seriously!

Oh, with all that talk about the protest groups, I almost forgot to answer your question about the art classes! I mostly teach the students about different ways to express themselves. I try to show them that everything around them can be inspiration for their art. It's not about being able to realistically draw a flower or a chair. It's about expressing their feelings through color and movement and shape. It's great fun! I can tell you more about it if you're really interested. Right now, I'm off to do some more cleaning up after my little Thanksgiving dinner party.

Sincerely,

Davina Bronco

Doesn't seem to yield any new or exciting information, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

Hello Luke,

Well, Liftport (www.liftport.com) is the company that constructed the Space Elevator
(SE) for our facility, they are very helpful and willing to share information on how
some of these problems are being met. You might try a web search someplace like
Google.com for references to a space elevator for additional questions.

I'm in charge of the space station, but many of the challenges in the SE are very
similar. However, the SE will only need to handle things like waste storage and
recycling for approximately 5 to 7 days. It dock either at the space station or at
the ground station, and much like the waste receptacles in a Recreational Vehicle
the waste that has been generated is removed from the vehicle.

Hope this helps,
Martha

Has anyone else looked at the Liftport site? Well made, but it seems incomplete. Many links either give a no content error or take the user back to the main page. I'm trying to decide whether it's in game or not.

I'm an ARG newbie, so don't beat me too badly if I'm completely off base! ^.^;

Liftport is OOG. It's been discussed multiple times, notably here and here and here.

Don't forget to use Search. I know it can be tricky at times to find the right keywords. This information could be found by searching for "liftport" in the Orbital Colony forum.
