Thanks Beglee. So frustrating when you're exactly on target and there's nothing there. 5 research stations are near: Cape Bird(77.14 166.2Cool, Scott Base(77.51 166.45), Worldpark (77.38 166.25), McMurdo (77.05 166.40) and Williams Field (77.9 167.0). Sounds like we've already emailed them. I'm so glad someone's tried snow as that would have been very annoying. Von's clue made me wonder if we're supposed to notice something from the Scott Base webcam
http://webcamlocator.com/worldwide/antarctica.htm
Couldn't see anything likely myself. So maybe it's a commemorative cross or something which wouldn't be marked on a map. I might email Stanfords. It sounds like someone's emailed antarcticatlasSPLATusgs.gov If not I will, but don't want to annoy them.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you used a compass at the south pole would it give you an incorrect reading? as if it was lying to you?

Ive got it...

Hello, i think you are looking in the wrong direction.

Alas, i know how to get the answer, but do not know enough about maths.

I was looking about in google and found that there is something called Polar coordinates.

You can translate these polar coordinates into normal coordinates.

However if would take a maths genius to work it out.....

Considering that nothing lies directly at the normal point on map.I think if we could translate it to normal terms-there would be something bang in the middle.

So please, can someone at least try my idea....as we can clearly see there is nothing there if you take them as normal coordinates.

Hope this helps, magicmancraig.

Such things as polar coordinates do exist in Mathematics, but the fact that the coordinates on the card end with S (South) and E (East), is a clear indication that these are longitude and latitude coordinates. Of course, there is no guarantee that they are coordinates to a place on earth.

[WEIRD]I had a dream about this card last night! Smile I went with a few people to Antarctica, and found the spot in question. There was a board over a hole in the ground/ice and, in the hole, there was a fridge containing hot food! Anyone wanna try fridge as the answer! Laughing [END OF WEIRDNESS]

About the apparent guest architect for this one:

She's been to Antartica, obviously:

http://research.unc.edu/endeavors/fall2005/harris.php

But, not only that - she has a total fascination for all things Mars, having stayed at the Desert Research Station in Utah. Which also acted as a home from home for Adrian Hon, didn't it? They probably know each other via the Mars interest (see below) but she's definitely been to Antarctica. May have to trawl through all her info in order to pick up what might be at these co-ordinates. Or else, mail her directly, I'm sure it's THAT easy!

And maybe someone can print out 'Elucidate' onto clear plastic and overlay it at these co-ordinates for me... Wink

About Kate

I'm Kate Harris - Canadian, Tar Heel, and aspiring Martian. When I'm not pretending I'm on Mars at the Desert Research Station or dreaming up plans for traveling to the most alien environments on Earth, I am a biology student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I love riding horses, snowboarding, rock climbing, scuba diving, backpacking, and adventure travel. I spent last summer trekking in a Bornean rainforest as a volunteer for SOS Rhino, and this spring I'll be living in a yurt in Mongolia on a study abroad program. Two summers ago, I completed an Outward Bound course in Utah - one of the greatest experiences of my life - and I'm really looking forward to returning to Mars on Earth.

All my life I've been fascinated with space and Mars exploration. To me, the red planet is the most appealing travel destination in the galaxy. Where others see Mars as a planet destitute of flora and fauna, I see land features indicating that liquid water, and thus possibly life, once flourished on ancient Mars. While others think that the exploration of Mars is a waste of money, I consider it an investment in the education and the future expansion of the human race. While others shun Mars as too distant and difficult a destination for a manned mission, I see the goal of sending humans to Mars as an alluring challenge that could be solved with diligent effort, collaboration and ingenuity.

But the most exciting thing about Mars is that it isn't a distant dream or science fiction; Mars is within reach. Using current technology, we could land a woman or man on Mars within a decade. As Mars exploration advocate Robert Zubrin often stresses, we are more prepared to send humans to Mars today than we were to land humans on the moon in the sixties. Mars is an entirely new world waiting to be explored, and for the first time in human history we are technologically capable of exploring it. The youth of today are the scientists, politicians, visionaries, astronauts, and pioneers of the future. We are truly generation Mars, and the power to make a difference, to make history, is in our hands.

If not us, then who? If not now, then when?

On to Mars.

Going back to Mars - the Mars Polar Lander ( http://quest.nasa.gov/ltc/mars/polar.html ) was supposed to land at 76S 195W (=165E), and along with the Mars relation from the guest architect, this seems too close to be a coincidence. The lander failed just before touch-down so wasn't exactly at those co-ordinates.

In 2000 Mars Global Surveyor imaged what was thought to be the crashed lander near the intended landing site ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4522291.stm and http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2005/05/05/index.html ), though images taken earlier this year show these claims are incorrect ( http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2005/10/17/index.html ).

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I have tried Mars Polar Lander, which isn't correct. Seeing as the lander isn't there, you could say that the Mars Global Surveyor was 'lying' in 2000 ("What lies here?"), so I tried both Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Orbiter Camera (the instrument on MGS which took the photos). Neither of these was the correct solution.

I still think the answer is related to this, since the co-ordinates are far too close to be a coincidence. Any more ideas?

I like the Mars Theory - the coordinates are right in the target landing zone for the mars polar lander (and it crash landed just off target).

For Earth Theory fans... I've found a cool online map of antartica.

If you zoom right in to the coordinates there's nothing but ice but the coordinates on the tool are approximate and there are a few features nearby worth guessing.

OK, thinking out loud, Mars, Antarctica, a quick google, WWW.concordiastation.org This is a station to emulate living on mars! Just the wrong coordinates!!!!
