Addie, while I understand what you fear here, and definitely understand why you'd write this, I have to subtly disagree with you.

In general, this group is much more tolerant than nearly any group on the internet, from what I've seen.

However, there are rules. These rules are clear, well written, and redundantly posted enough that there's no good reason to miss them.

So that's point 1.

Point 2 is that there was ample time for this PM to recognize the error of his ways, and even if he did not read the rules at first, to do so that first couple hours. (Obviously he was reading the thread, otherwise he wouldn't have written the comments about Phaedra- leading to her whole philosophical rant about the realities of characters and leaving their worlds, etc...) So, there was a remedy available there, that was ignored, and instead continued to trample the rules blatantly pointed out directly to him.

So Point 3 is minor, but honest... The PM dissed a player (again, in this case, Phaedra) IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GAME!

My opinion is that if any one of these points was broken individually, sure... say "bad form" and call it a day. Lock the thread and let it die the inevitable painful death of ignorance.

However, with more than one, (and all three at that?!) then I feel in this case, the community has the right to place this game in a place of public shame. An example to other PMs to say "Here's what you DON'T do. Cuz if you do, you will NOT be forgiven. This is unacceptable."

It's not to be cliquish. It's not to be mean. It's to have a little fun, sure. However, it's not at an innocent's expense. That would be cruel and that would be mean. However, this is someone who had a chance to turn back, didn't, and beyond that, insulted those who took the offensive against the game. That's more than bad form. It's downright insulting to the community. I will gladly play this PMs next game, with joy, if he has learned the error of his ways. I have no ill will towards the person who created this game. I DO however have great offense and ill will towards the crappy launch of this game. It's not cuz it's on freewebs. It's NOT cuz there's no money behind it. You can do free sites and do quite well (see Project Gateway or Rookery Tower for examples of fine low-budget gaming) It's about how you treat your audience.

Anyway, I'm sorry for ranting. I don't mean to get all meta here. But I do feel that in light of your comment (which again, I understand and is a valid concern) you deserve reply, and not of the knee-jerk variety.

Yes, just as I know you're not actually curled up in a fetal position sucking your thumb, but rather sitting in front of your computer drinking a Mountain Dew and picking at the sole of your shoe.

Stop it. You don't know where that's been. Razz

Only those individuals who are moderators in the forum you are posting in can see your IP address. For example, I'm a moderator over in the Last Call Poker forums, so if you posted there, I'd be able to see it, but I can't see it here.

The site administrators can see your IP regardless of where you're posting, I believe.

Correct. Admin-level positions can go in to the general control panel and see who's in what forum and what their IP is, even if they're "guests." Mod-level positions can only see IPs for those forums they're assigned Mod status in.

I would like to sneak in a say that upon reading and lurking through this entire thread, I tend to agree. Unfiction is the only place on the internet where I haven't seen huge, shitstormy fights due to stupid questions, newbies, and what have you. It does have it's rules, and they are very simple rules. People need to be reminded at times that yes, people will not play your game if you launch it in a horrid way.

But this game kinda deserved to be wanked. And with the pm posting a version of the ever present 'Oh noes, goodbye cruel internets Args!' post, well, it kinda proved that it did.

It's the same thing when people get bad reviews for crappy fanfiction. If you put something out there, publish it, persay, on the internet, you are going to open yourself to critique. It's the way the world. If your game is poorly launched, rife with spelling errors and mistakes, and you continuely break the rules of the flagship community of args, then you need to take a step back, and rethink your game.

Though, this might just be the troll of games. Heh. Sorry.

Gaz, I've written you a PM that I'd like for you to read before you decide to go. I will not reproduce the contents of that PM here, but please allow me to clarify again, that we are in no way picking on you as much as the launch strategy of the game.

We want you here. We want you to learn from the experience, and come back later as a more seasoned ARG-er, a more formidable PM, and to later, if you desire, launch the game of legends...

It's not you that we took offense with. It was the launch. So please accept my apology if I seemed to target you, and not the game. We want you here. This will all blow over in a couple weeks. Let's just learn from this, and move on. You admit your mistakes, and we all agree that we've made our spectacle, and will move on.

EDIT: However, I would give my left leg to be a robot. I cannot deny this. Smile

I'd like to reiterate, once again, that I am not about to dictate that people should not mock or pile-on.

But please please please stop with the "we as a community" stuff as justification for your nastiness, silliness, whatever this is. Please stop speaking for me.

Guys, please don't make me branch this off into yet ANOTHER meta forum on the whos whys whens and hows of community and PM relations. We've been over it many times (such as Wolf kindly points out above).

If you care to continue a discussion on what behooves us all as good, kind, sweet people, then please, continue it over there in yonder Meta section where it actually belongs and let this thing die a pleasant natural death like it wants to.

Ahem.

I'm getting embarassed, here.

Re: How...

*sigh*

Look, Max, or gazdemon, or whatever you want to be called:

As far as I'm concerned, you are forgiven. I sent you a nice cordial PM when you violated yet another of the forum's rules by having a gimongous avatar, with smiley faces, and I have endeavored to answer the question you just asked politely, also with smiley faces, as I will endeavor to answer any other questions you may ask politely, and, most likely, with smiley faces.

Apologizing when you screw up is good. It's good that you are trying to team up with other PMs in the PM recruitment area and learn about designing and running an ARG, rather than just trying again with insufficient preparation. As a player, that gives me confidence. Might I suggest that before you try to launch another ARG, you play some, as well? Playing an ARG and running one require different skill sets, but playing an ARG can give you good insight into how they are structured and what works and what doesn't. It will also let you get to know people around here, so that when you are ready to trying PMing again, you'll have made some contacts and have people you can work with, or ask for advice.

People around here attempt to provide a lot of different resources for PMs. Use them.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to read some of the discussions about ARGs that have failed, as well as ARGs that have succeeded. It will provide you with ideas, and help you to not make the same mistakes that others have made.

This is all good. Smile So again, as far as I'm concerned, you're forgiven, mmkay?

Your game is not forgiven, and I'm afraid you'll probably just have to deal with that. People are probably going to refer to it negatively for a while. It seems to have touched on a number of META issues that people are probably going to discuss. It's probably going to be used as a bad example for a while, until something else comes along that ruffles people's feathers.

That said:

If you really want to, PM an admin (jamesi, Scarpegrosse, bill, Gupfee, SpaceBass, vpisteve).

gazdemon wrote:

But you didn't just "forget," gazdemon. Even after people were talking about the rules on the forum, you continued to break them. The rules are there for a reason. Please read them, if you haven't already.

Okay?

I don't think anyone hates you, no one wants you to go, read the rules, play some games, and everything will be well. Smile

I have enjoyed this thread immensely because I am a cold-hearted, superficious robot. I am mean and bitter for the sake of being mean and bitter. I also enjoy when people fall down stairs (or, even better, when they fall up stairs). I see no reason to get all philosophical about it. I'm a mean bastard and I found this entire trainwreck HI-larious.

Good show.

Please use my CRAPPY ARG as an example of WHAT NOT TO DO!
So that others can learn from my mistakes!
...Please can you also put me down in the hall of fame for being the CRAPPIEST PM OF ALL TIME!?!
For now I must leave you, and I leave you with this... It is not the game that makes the game...it is the players!
Goodbye! Worshippy

well then shame on us for wanting quality. If you are trying to make a last jab, then kid, try a bit harder. I suggest you either suck it up and be sincere about being sorry, or drop it, because you are not helping things.

EDITED TO ADD: please please please Locky! before a flaming thing starts. This kid is turning into a troll.....

Okay, well, clearly this is not going anywhere productive. Rolling Eyes As much as the side of me that occasionally doesn't flip the channel fast enough when reality TV is tempted to keep watching... Locky!
