Ceremonies
Thursday, December 1 2005, 12:08 PM
I've been receiving a lot of email recently about two things - subway stations and Perplex City ceremonies 'that involve a flame'. I would like to believe that all of this is just about the 'Tales from Earth' book that Violet told me you're writing for her (I'm glad that I'm not the only one she can persuade to help her on bizarre tasks!) but I have a feeling that your interest isn't entirely academic.
Anyway. I gather that there are a bunch of light and fire-based ceremonies that take place in Perplex City. Most of them have religious significance, just like on Earth. The best people to contact are the Brotherhood of the Six. Yes, they're a bit odd and they caused me to ruin a perfectly good pair of trousers by kneeling down in the mud and 'seeing the light of Gyvann' in order to create a distraction for Violet to get away... but I'm sure that at least they know their religious ceremonies
so the brotherhood of the six eh?...........a bit "odd" but we should drop them a line.

oh look! now we can email them! what a good timing

I guess what Kurt is trying to say is, next time we shouldn't *all* send them a mail when we have a puzzle? It would be kinda suspicious if all of a sudden, now, we all email the Brotherhood about flame things. Maybe just one or two then?

and on that note... I blasted of a quick email that reads as follows:

Dear Ms. Flynnt,
I am writing from Earth to enquire about any possible similarities between religions in our two societies.
As winter draws in and the days grow shorter, it is natural for one to be comforted by light. To that end, many religious ceremonies during this time of year involve flame (the purest/most natural source of light). The first of these would probably have been the Pagan ritual celebrating the winter solstice, and the beginning of the lengthening of days.
This ceremony was later adapted into Christianity as the anniversary of the birth of the Son of G-d in order to bring more people into their religion. Christians commonly light candles in and 'Advent Crown', counting down the days to this anniversary.
Also at this time of year, members of the Jewish faith celebrate Hannukah, this involves lighting eight candles (one per day) in an elaborate and ceremonial candle-holder.
Do the religious personages of Perplex City have any similar rituals/ceremonies involving fire/flame at this time of year? In particular I am intrigued by the "Restitution of the Cube" as mentioned on your Earth-visible web-page.
My thanks in advance.

The 21st is a Wednesday, however I think that might be a deliberate mistake.

I sent Sister Flynnt an email as well and got the same automatic response.
Their winter solstice takes place on Tuesday the 21st December which is odd as the 21st here is a Wednesday.
But I think this is when we send someone to Gillet Rd abandoned subway station.

I would be hesitant about coming to that conclusion yet. The winter solstice may not be the same thing as the kindling ceremony and we can't be sure of the date as we don't know which day it is on.

No, it says 21st December 267 (2004), which was a Tuesday. This year is 268 . She hasn't updated her email signature for a year, which is odd considering she claims to it to be a "New high technology Feature".

I'm guessing this post is in response to the e-mail I sent him yesterday:

Hey Kurt,
I have a couple questions for you that you're probably going to think are really weird and random. First, I was wondering if any Perplexian traditions or holidays involve a torch or flame of some kind. I know that seems like a really vague question; you guys have probably got tons of ceremonies involving some sort of flame. I was just wondering if there was any particular holidays or ceremonies that would come to mind if you heard the words "ceremony of the kindling of the flame," or something along those lines. Secondly, I had some questions regarding the Perplex City Subway system. How long has it been around? Are there any subway stations that are no longer in use? If so, would it be possible to get a list of the abandoned subway stations? I know you must think I'm completely nuts for asking such random questions. It's just that some of my colleagues and I are compiling a database of facts about Perplex City and I'm in charge of researching the public transportation systems and holidays of Perplex City (completely unrelated subjects, I know). Any assistance you could give us would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In order to prevent suspicion in further emails, I suggest we elect one of us as an 'official unFiction comms dude' and that person then takes aboard what people say on these forums, and then sends just the 1 email. That way the message is then coherent and they don't get mad email attacks.

I think they expect a lot of e-mails as sotonrich said.
I don't believe having one person send an e-mail is the way to go. If a rapor is struck between a player and an in game character then that may be the case, however in this situation I would encourage whoever wants to send one to send one. Its better to just get involved..
Normally when a lot of people send out e-mails they just pick the best or most creative to reply to, i.e. Juxtas Mornington Cresent mail, which was original.
As far as OOG terms go, this is a game, the more interaction with their user base the better, its a good signal to MC whether a particular plot is popular or not.

Fair point. Guess Kurt was gonna get suspicious regardless then.
