[Tales from Earth] Cover Art

Cover art for the book (whatever its called... Tales from the Third Planet seems to be leading the poll), anyhow...
Emailed Ellen about this...
Quote:
Dear chippy,

Thank you for your email; I am aware of the book and I'm looking forward to seeing the manuscript. It would be best if you sent in a selection of the best designs in JPG format (below 100k each) and we will then either pick one of those, or use our in-house designers to adapt one of your designs. Naturally, any design used would be credited, although we would require a similar Creative Commons licence as used with the text.

Yours sincerely,
Ellen Moriyama

so i propose that we submit covers! If theres loads we may need to think about how to choose the best selection selection... that is, assuming you can do better than my attempt! Wink

I think South America is doing something quite nasty-the circular rings (3P parady) was good.

I mentioned on IRC i'd quite like to have a go at a montage of the players. I think it was Cassandra's idea, however I'd like to make it one of those montages where all the pictures are quite small but put together and viewed as a whole collate into another big picture (I'm sure you've seen similar posters Wink) Would look cool and also show off the collabrative nature of the book.

So, if anyone wants there picture on the front of the book, either attach it to a post or e-mail me in confidence, or PM me whatever Very Happy

mr_james_stone*SPLAT*hotmail*DOT*com

I'll need a few to do it mind you so don't be shy Very Happy

EDIT: Thinking about it, it would be cool to get some of the pictures from the live events up there as well as player pictures. if you have a blog or any uploaded just send me the link and I'll include them too....

EDIT2: Oh yes an example; http://www.drewnoakes.com/code/montage/images/brothers.jpg that one is pretty horrid, ours will look a lot better, but you get the idea Very Happy

Reason: Is that going to be doable at under 100K?

What about the three linked rings idea?

Good point, I can get it down to that size easily enough though, I'll have a go at least, it would be nice to have a player collage anyway. It seems strange though that the front cover has a size limit, if it's printed I can't see that being a huge issue...oh well.

I read it as the image had a limit to stop them getting flooded with 20 meg image files. I'm sure when the images are picked we could send through a higher resolution image for the real thing...

May I humbly reccomend that the multi-pictures that will form this mosaic, form into the uber picture of the Earth?

Meaning, that from a distance, you see the Earth, and up close, you see those little bitty picures...

Reason, have you ever done a photomosaic before? A good one can take a fFew thousand working photos to start fFrom. It's a good idea, sure. but it's more than, you know, take some snaps, toss em together. there's a good deal of technique involved. i mean, if you know about all this, cheers to that and good fFortune. But it's not quite exactly a lickety split simple thing to do. And there's a good chance it won't look like much once it's been shrunk a bit and printed.

Although I haven't done one, I have a good working knowledge of whats involved as I work in design. I'm going to give it a go at least, you don't need thousands of pics though, lots sure, not thousands, you can randomise and repeat a lot of them.

Worst case scenario it doesn't come out quite as I had planned, but I guarentee if enough people send me photos it will still look good as a simple montage, so send me some pics and i'll get started..

I think Reason idea is a cracking one, especially if it made it into the shape of the earth! I for one will be sending a picture.

Why are so many of my posts ones saying 'Good Idea!'? Smile

Because if no-one agreed, Muffin, we'd all sit here looking at one another going *er?*

I like the idea of the photomosaic, can you use the photos from the players gallery (not sure whether that's still going, not been paying attention for quite some time Mikeyj looks guilty)? If it proves too big or troublesome, how about something using everyone's nicks...in a sort of ASCII art kinda way? A big globe? Three big globes forming a lovely syzygy? Elegant homage, or nerdy turn-off?

Cool, glad you like the idea, I'm going to trawl around to see what i can find, but if anyone has any links to some pics please let me know. also I was thinking of including avatar pics aswell. If you would like your avatar shown could you PM me or e-mail me. If you would like your pic shown e-mail it to me. If you know of any flickr accounts or other areas that might have pxc pics please post links, i'm trawling around for pics but i might miss out on a few... Very Happy

How about this:

Get a picture of Earth, floating in space, then have the last two rings from the 3Planet (our) logo radiating out as light reflection.

Here is an extremely horrible copy of what I mean.

I'm thinking that... except from someone with talent and full-time access to Photoshop.
