Heat will kill a man.....doh!! I know I know, the fact that the heat will kill a man in 4 hours has been hammered into our brains since episode #1, but...
When Silas Bodnick is saying this during Jim's peyote trip at the tattooman's place, the closed captioning says something different.
Instead of "this heat could kill a man in 4 hours ", the CC writes:
"Of course, he could kill a man for 4 hours. He could kill a man for 4 hours..."
I just wanted to see if anyone else caught this, or if this is just another CC error (ever watched the news with CC on...its always screwy). I think it is intentional tho. I haven't gone back to the other episodes to see if this is the case everytime they say it, but I'll check it out...lemme know what you think!!

I caught it, thought it was weird.
Chalked it up to bad CC script editing.

It's along the same mistake of the CC twisting the intent around at the beginning of ep2. When Jim is saying "I witnessed a murder" during the beginning dream sequence, CC humorously says "Calling, Mr. Murder. Calling, Mr. Murder."
When I say that, I was thinking of Lucille Ball on the Lucy Show, "Mr. Mooney, Oh, Mr. Mooney."
Along the same lines, they also add extra lines that aren't even said. They have Jim's wife, Darlene, saying, "Shut up, I'm on the phone" after her boyfriend in the Winslow motel shouts out "...I'm ready to go again."
Also, near the end of Ep3 there is a place where the CC has a voice-over flashback of Darlene saying something that isn't actually said.
So, in the end, it appears that the CC is less than reliable as a source for providing accurate dialogue...and it might be prudent not to put too much weight on anything that is revealed on it. I never saw them actually use the "You know those two rocks" statement by Caleb as a marker when Shadrach was roaming around Demonhead Flats. Granted, that part may have ended up on the cutting room floor and the CC was never changed to reflect that.

Heh..."Calling Mr. Murder".
That would, I believe, be our good friend serpent-tattoo man Oswald Wilkes. You can totally tell he's "Mr. Murder" since his first and last names are taken from presidential assassins Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth.
Unfortunately for your SPEC, it took Booth a bit longer than four hours to kill a man. Approximately NINE hours elapsed between his shooting of Abraham Lincoln and Lincoln's eventual demise:

Of course, it took Oswald mere seconds to finish off poor JFK. The moral of the story? Never trust anything you see on the Closed Captioning.

Speaking of Oswald Wilkes, did anyone notice him in Jim's dream sequence? He was in the background of the snapshot of the sale of the Versailles Casino.
What do you make of him? Hired thug? Or is there more to him.
I thought it was odd that he ended up dead. Unless, he isn't really dead.

I thought he was killed because he screwed up and allowed Jim to identify him from his tattoo. Was it a dream sequence or Jim playing back in his mind all the evidence that he had so far?

I don't know it seemed pretty dreamy to me. I'll have to go back and watch it. Maybe that was drug induced.

Regarding the heat, I can't remember the exact quote, but after little Jimmy burns himself with the car lighter, his Dad calls him brave. Then he says "we prufrocks can take the heat" or something like that.
Anyway, I have to know - what do you all make of the ocassional flashback Jim has to the tire and it's tinted red - heavy breathing.

Is that flashback with the tire and red and breathing a view from the inside of a trunk? I cant tell what it is.

Definetly the view from inside a trunk... the Rambler's trunk I'd say...I suspect that we'll find out that dear old Jim was inside the trunk when his dad, Al, was beaten/killed/taken ...which I'm not sure as of yet...I'm betting on killed, and Jim heard the whole thing, thus the painful memory flashback...
Total speculation, but it would tie up some loose ends and help bring the storyline back full circle...

Do we know what Al Prufrock did for a living before he met his demise? If he did...

It does look like the inside of a car trunk; but I don't think anybody ever put raised letter tires on ramblers except as a joke, so maybe it is somebodies elses car
