Here is a 600 dpi scan of the grey area in the reimann card. Just a warning this is big, there's some minor damage on the left hand side.

Sorry but I didn't read philippa's question about the location of the smudge. The one I've seen on 3 cards is exactly half way along the top margin, just within the silver above the black. It looks as though it would be some kind of pattern if sufficiently magnified. However if not everyone has it then it can't be of any significance. I hadn't noticed it until my friend pointed it out.

I couldn't see it on a 600 DPI scan. Perhaps, as it is silver, if you reflected light off it, and looked at it through a standard microscope, you could read it.

I've just examined it on a 9600DPI scan (yes, really that high, not a typo) and could see nothing. My dot is in the very top right hand corner, on the silver part, not quite at the centre of one of the rings. Would be interested to see what you cansee through a good microscope though!

Has anybody tried IR UV or anything? Im just wondering if perhaps the visible text has an underlay where some of the words vanish under the right conditions, like on shuffled, to reveal the actual puzzle.

Btw are we on about the black smudge just to the left of the Riemann title inbetween the black border and silver strip?

I don't have any marking near the word Riemann, so I'm not sure how valid this is.... doesn't anyone else have a dot in the top right hand corner?

Tried the same thing but just a black dot ( but bigger).
Don't have access to a microscope but eagerly anticipate the result from those who do

It might be just me, but I find it hard to believe that they would put any clues in the border of the card.

Has anyone checked for hidden text in the margins on the claymath website or the solve page?

I'm thinking there must be something on that site we can use, as we are linked to it from everywhere!

maybe there's something in the image of riemann in the margin on the site!

Also I have never come accross a margin that runs up the side and continues accross the top, that would generally be a border.

If these have been suggested before then warn me in advance, I left my trout repellant umbrella at home.

no da

Good idea. I did so and got the reply

Thanks for your email. There are no notes in the margin. The previous reply you received alluded (jokingly) to Fermat's notes in the margin:

Bah! ... or is it?
