We do still seem to be getting as few new ones although I think you are right that we may now be getting near to getting them all. (I suspect the coded mail (if it is coded) may be the important one... Very Happy

perplexed resigns himself to wasting hours with xor decryption algorithms... BRIAN! A little help...

ok they're not ASCII they're ANSI extended. It shouldnt be that difficult to decrypt but i need to go to sleep. OK... the range of ANSI values of the encrypted text is huge, leading me to think that there must be a reasonably complex function involved, someone else can do all the leg work. IF you're in America you could do this over lunch, if ur in england; good night!

I think that the strange characters are supposed to be part of an email - so we should be combining them into a MIMS message - to see the whole message. It could be an attachment or an alternative character set.

there seem to be way too many different characters, was the formatting like this in the original? If so that means paragraphing was preserved and therefore each cypher letter must be only part of a real letter.

Got this one first:

..b'h"*.~Sܢ{bzubqb{hjZ+a<.iyǫ'yǝh+>{.Yjwkz۫li(q-$xW'r>y7s~W

Then:

v??jBx+jۥjبz̨[u?ߢze{'z{urv<>-)<^o??."z^Xze{S{m֥SÏ;S..޲?oyuƫvzSsޮT^(
..b'h"*.~Sܢ{bzubqb{hjZ+a<.iyǫ'yǝh+>{.Yjwkz۫li(q-$xW'r>y7s~W

Then:
v??jBx+jۥjبz̨[u?ߢze{'z{urv<>-)<^o??."z^Xze{S{m֥SÏ;S..޲?oyuƫvzSsޮT^(
..b'h"*.~Sܢ{bzubqb{hjZ+a<.iyǫ'yǝh+>{.Yjwkz۫li(q-$xW'r>y7s~W

And finally:

v??jBx+jۥjبz̨[u?ߢze{'z{urv<>-)<^o??."z^Xze{S{m֥SÏxS..޲?oyuƫvzSsޮT^(
..b'h"*.~Sܢ{bzubqb{hjZ+a<.iyǫ'yǝh+>{.Yjwkz۫li(q-$xW'r>y7s~W
+rƝzlYO4y~"z׫^+iƝzf.'.뢾6뢶(br׫Syثy^+.ݢz<_j֥rZ,xZ~fQyS &h.?ҹr(xzڵRz>vNu^~r

This is exactly the way I got them, all I did was copy and paste them into this, have not edited them at all.

I thought that it was just my computer playing up, and sending me gobbledegook, and they are just the original emails gone wrong, but thought I would check, also got some others that are ok, in amongst them. Got 8 altogether for solving four sets.

Hope this helps

It looks like the text you get when you look at a Chinese website and you don't have the language pack installed. Could it be this??? Is there anyway of converting it? Why on earth would Perplexians be writing in Chinese? I'll get my coat.

Well, they all share:

v??jBx+jۥjبz̨[u?ߢze{'z{urv<>-)<^o??."z^Xze{S{m֥SZS..޲?oyuƫvzSsޮT^(
..b'h"*.~Sܢ{bzubqb{hjZ+a<.iyǫ'yǝh+>{.Yjwkz۫li(q-$xW'r>y7s~W
+rƝzlYO4y~"z׫^+iƝzf.'.뢾6뢶(br׫Syثy^+.ݢz<_j֥rZ,xZ~

Then change after the "~".

So, I would guess that's a type of header, format, etc.
Something constant in every mail in the Gobbledygook Set.
(At least, as far I caught at a glimpse.)

Just trying to put out whatever I can.

Well obviously the repeated bit is the part where it tells you about getting your points, so maybe someone could look at this alongside one of the normal mails and work out what each symbol represents!

So what were saying is that:

Quote:
Dear ???,

Congratulations, you've solved a set of four Perplex City cards. We've
rewarded you by doubling your points for each of the cards in the set.

Your Perplex Point total is now ????. You have solved ?? cards.

We in Perplex City would like to thank you for your continued dedication
to our cause. With your help, we are certain that the Receda Cube will be
found and returned safely.

I'm not sure that this is real or not (famous last words). Is there any way that your email could have screwed it up? What do system / software do you read it on?

I was thinking the same thing, but was going to try to prove it was fake before pointing any fingers.

I can't see why only don would get them if it were not a mistake.

I dunno, follow this up if you want but I don't suppose it'll lead anywhere.

also don said that he got 8 mails for 4 sets, maybe this is just a coded version of the other 4 mails that was sent/picked up by accident?

If people are going to continue down this track.

The "identical" section actually has some changes in it. Namely the second line.

I have spotted:

SÏ;S..
SÏxS.. and
SZS..

Which differ in some of the mails.

Now assuming it is some sort of direct substituation cipher then these could be differing number of points/cards solved, but tehre is only (as far as i can see) one altered section. Which suggest that either cards or points changes and not the other.

Will have a closer look when i get back from squash.

The thing that worries me is that there are way too many different characters, there's about 50 as opposed to 26, which obviously means that each real letter is two cyher letters, which poses some cryptographical problems. That therefore also means that there is not nearly enough text to write out all that 'dear etc...' I recon the bit that stays the same may only be the bit that says 'From namewitheld, To: namewitheld'.

This is all presuming that its not an idiosyncracy of software, or Microsoft being shite.

Quote:
From: name withheld
To: name withheld
Subject:
Date: ???

matches all the identical gobledegook with only one change...

Possibly a troutable offense besides being obvious but not mentioned for the record -

Sente seems to have a propensity for using only intials for people's names...Who else likes to do that? Hmmmm....

Another tease?

OK, I make it over 120 unique characters (including case) which encompasses almost all of the different sections of the Unicode character set, this looks tricky, I may lay off examining it for a while.
