Just seems like gobbldeggok to me, got more of them but they are not exactly the same as this, but nearly.

[garbage characters]

Are you saying that there was the message prefix ""Congratulations, you've solved four Perplex City cards..." followed by the garbage characters, or that you got the garbage characters as a separate email with nothing else?

What mailer do you use? Is there a way to export the full message (including the complete headers like Received, Message-Id, and Content Type) to a file to attach to this thread? It's really hard to perform analysis without working on the actual bytes of the message (since it includes high-ASCII, which includes "unprintable" control characters that usually get stripped by copying, pasting, and posting in a message, it's hard to go by what you've pasted in the forums.) Plus, full headers will help us verify the "Received:" path to ensure that it's official and not from a spammer or prankster.

These were the messages exactly as I got them, was asking in the first place cos I didn't know whether it was a glitch coming into my pc. (I am using IE6) There was no prefixing statement Congratulations.....

Dont know much about computers, but in the properties for the message, this is what was in the details.

Hate to say this, but "reverse.theplanet.com" is apparently responsible for hitting sites, clogging bandwidth, and then spam-flooding; did a Google search on the name, and I suggest someone more knowledgable do the same before we regail this spastic output as an OOG glitch.

The "non-gobbldeggok" emails have very similar details, from reverse.theplanet.com.

Also not an expert in such things, so there may be differences.

The Content-Transfer-Encoding kind of makes me scratch my head and wonder if there is a misconfigured something-or-other (mail program or mail server) out there. If the message was plaintext and not encoded and if it happened to have a length that's a multiple of three and if a BASE64 encoding header got accidentally got inserted, then your mail program may have tried "decoding" the plaintext (thinking it was BASE64) into binary garbage.

If this is the case (and it's based on conjecture and guesswork), then it would be theoretically probably possible to just run the binary through a BASE64 encoder to get plaintext, but you'd need a perfect copy of the binary (i.e. none of the nonprintable characters stripped out), and I have no idea how to do that in Outlook (which I presume you're using because of the "message properties" statement.)

I received another email today, I have checked through this thread and can't see it and unfortunately I don't have access to the Wiki from work to check.

So apologies if it's already in the Wiki, if not could someone out it in please. Thanks.

It's not my fault. I simply mistook the contact. The contact gave the appropriate response to the feeder line and correctly completed the third element. I barely gave anything away before realising the error. She didn't appear suspicious. Contact correctly identified within two hours. I don't think this need go further up the line. Please do not refer to V.

Performing a BASE64 decode on the first word in all of the messages, "Dear", results in the string "" - which also happens to be the first two characters in the gobbledegook stream you've got there. Looks like you're right on the mark Bri.

Although it's not identical to the actual message, when trying to encode the posted messages, we can get some legible text.

From what I can make of it, the messages are as follows:

1. 29 Sept 2005 - 7.32am
2. 9 Sept 2005 - 9.44am
3. 9 Sept 2005 - 9.40am
4. Not sure, it's completely scrambled, but it's also very short - only about three to four words long I think.

After I received the first one, I sent off this email:

Hey! Wink
I've read on the UnFiction Forum, that one other person received 4 of these 'gobbledygook' emails... Now me?
Is this a mistake, or are we supposed to decipher it? Razz
Thanks!

I hope they reply! I'd hate to miss a really important 'leak', if it comes in this manner! Sad

Hey - Anna said you weren't doing anything tonight. Want to come out with me and
Violet and a couple of her friends? There's a classic movie programme at
Ascendancy Point with lectures beforehand, then we'll probably grab some dinner.

Two sentences that are worthwhile thinking about...

These are leaked emails.

This is not a game.

Well, we seem to be about tapping out what we ae going to learn
fFrom these messages. the stories seem to be fFully told, to this
point. So, what do we do with the information we've gathered?

The stuff we now have on Caine should probably be tucked away
and sat on until we need is services (like say we might need him to
run a chore at a certain subway station, fFor instance.) we can pull
out our dosier on him and say "please do this .. it would be very
embarrassing fFor all of us if sente fFund out about certain gallery
painting activities, tristan." We can sit on those eggs fFor a while Smile

I was thinking about this business between sente and anna about
aiko. Like okay we know what they are discussing. Sente -- who
publicly seemed very cool about aiko's religious activities --
rat-finked all over her! so like, I'm thinking a nice email to violet
might be nice. something like "Look, this business with aiko .. I
know you dont fFeel all that well about being around her. but it
isn't your fFault at all. Your dad had a lot to do with all that. And
Garnet Reed stood up fFor her and helped her out, so if you wanted
to make good with her, you might talk to him some." or ..
something.

Lastly, [META: I'm wondering where we are going with all the
exposition about the uber-flirty tippy. Nice character development,
at any rate.]

If you take a normal email message, save it then edit it with a text editor. You can add the lines

Quote:
Content-Disposition: inline
Content-Transfer-Encoding: BASE64

To the header area. Then if you save it and reopen it as an email - you get just the sort of strange message as discussed previously. Now the question is - how to reverse the process?

Question to donstobbart - did you examine the message source too? Logically if the message source is opened it should be the original message (before BASE64 decoding).
