Just an idea and it may not be any use, but has anyone thought of trying fiction rather than real world for the coordinates. They have used fictional things before, and I know that Dr Who went to Antarctica in the Tardis for example.

Apsley Cherry-Garrard

I have been watching this forum since getting this card like everyone else have failed with answers such as McMurdo Sound, Cape Crozier etc, etc.
I have done an albeit brief bit of research on Aplsey Cherry-Garrard who accompanied Scott. It would appear that Cherry-Garrard, Bill Wilson and Henry Bowers 'Birdie' took it on themselves to '.... secure an unattatched Emperor Penguin Egg!' The result of this expedition was to leave them tentless and stranded for two days - practically dead. They would have been better off boiling the egg and eating it!! When the storm had subsided it transpired that their tent had only blown a couple of feet away and was partially buried by snow. Then then hiked to a store (not Tesco) 'One Ton Depot' ate loads, drank loads and lived to tell the story.

So I am wondering if the answer could be either:

1) Emperor Penguin Egg
2) One Ton Depot, or
3) Tent.

I sadly can't test these as I have locked myself out of this card for today.

If anyone is successful - let me know.

Sadly the outcome of securing of the egg is unknown - I would guess however that if faired considerably better that the do-gooders who thought it such a good idea to take it there in the first place.

Very Happy

Hello ther guys and gals, I'm noob to unfiction. But, I have to say I'm not a noob to Polar, Though I am a bit stuck at the moment.

What I have done so far:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

I've been in touch with someone at the NZ scott research base: this is the response:

Your request about what is at 78deg38'36.9"S 166deg45'58.5"E was passed on to me. Unfortunately I can't give you anything other than Turks Head Ridge, as I have been to Turks Head but not up onto the ridge itself. I checked to see whether the NZ program ever had a survey point or some such there and couldn't find any record. One thought is the Dr Phillip Kyle of the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology has an array of seismometers & GPS equipment spread around Ross Island monitoring Mt Erebus and it may be one of his sites if it is on rock.
Have fun chasing this up
cheers
Peter Cleary

Following this up I then contacted Dr. Phillip Kyle in New Mexico (response was far from polite) It appeared I had been beaten to him by TheBoy (well done). But he did have the generousity to include the info which he sent to theboy:

"I have no idea what this is all about. The location is NOT Turks Head Ridge but it is behind Minna Bluff on the Ross Ice Shelf. There is nothing there but snow.
Philip"

There seems to be a connection: "Minna BLUFF" "What LIES here"

I've tried
Minna
Minna Bluff
Bluff

.....to no avail.

What I am waiting on:

Reply from the person whom the Kate Harris went to Antarctica with.
Reply from CIA.
Reply from NZ.

The coordinates given are EXTREMELY specific, so I doubt that it will be for a planet such as MARS (not so sure about the moon). I think we need to discover the precise location of the co-ordinates.

Sorry for waffling so much but I thought it best to confirm progress.

Updates to follow.............. Very Happy

I did a quick image search on google for Minna Bluff and found this:

Based on that, could that answer be:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
sponge?

I'd try it myself but I don't have this card.

This was damn funny hehe, answere here.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Well I was reading about the puzzle architect and found some clues then thought I'd read more about McMurdo and found this site:
http://www.bigdeadplace.com/

Both mentioned stuff about lots of dead seals although the latter was funnier so I decided to try it out.

Answer: seal

oh well. No need to look around the universe when the answer was being bludgeoned in front of our noses. I was slightly too enthusiastic in wanting to enter a solve, and forgot that I didn't have the card, so I can confirm that it's not the answer to differently lethal. Hope we let those helpful antarctic scientists know how we or rather you got there. They might appreciate the humour.

Pissed off at MC for this one check out what the proffessionals say below...well hey at least its solved

I think the nearest named point that would correspond most closely with the coordinates you give will be "Turks Head" itself, rather than "Turks Head Ridge" which extends northwards inland from the Turks Head on the south side of Ross Island. It lies towards the centre of "Windless Bight" on the coast of the island. At this point on the coast it is the Ross Ice Shelf, rather than the sea, that abuts against the coast. So there is no open water hereabouts. I have not found a specific reference to Turks Head but the rock will almost certainly be volcanic, probably lava or ash from one of the volcanic centres to the north. There could be lichens and mosses on the rocks and probably a microfauna living amongst any mosses. There are no seals or penguins there but there may be some flighted birds that nest there. I cannot think of anything else likely to "lie here".

Evil or Very Mad
