[INTERACTION][EMAIL] Stevie 12/11

I wrote my first email to Stevie on 12/10 Here's how it goes.
Quote:
Hi Stevie!
My name's Sherlock Holmes (Yes, my mommy and daddy named me
that). I came across your blog after hearing about it from a friend
named Lisa Anne. She said that you needed help, and she thought that
I could help out. I read your blog and heard about your daddy. I'm
so sorry. My thoughts are with you and your mommy, along with your
Uncle Seth.
A little bit about me: I'm a high schooler, who likes to sing and
play the saxophone. I have a puppy named Toby (I'm sure he'd like to
meet Raidar!). I hope that we can get to know each other, and that I
can help you out in any way possible.
Toby wanted to say to Raidar: Nubl gurer! Zl anzr'f Gbol. V'z

Toby also wanted me to send the attached file to you. Maybe it'll
mean something to Raidar.

Good Luck!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The code ROT-13's to: Ahoy there! My name's Toby. I'm
Sherlock's companion and fellow puzzle solver. I've been looking at
the picture's you've been sending to Sherlock's friends of the human
Seth's letter. I think that it is absolutely crucial that somebody
get a good picture of the letter. That may give us the clue that we
need. Attached is what I have fabricated of the letter. If you can
fill me in on more, that would be fabulous. Woof Woof, Toby.

The attached file I reference is attached to this post.

Stevie's reply:

Quote:
Hi Sherlock!

Does Toby have the last name Watson? I have read a few of the books about Sherlock Holmes, but they never tell you what clues he found when he finds them, so it is difficult to solve the mystery before you get to the end of the book. Isn't that frustrating?

Uncle Seth doesn't want me to help him, but he hasn't found my Daddy yet. My other friends have asked their parents to help as well. But I don't think that Uncle Seth is letting them. He told me I should not tell people what we are doing to find my Daddy. But how are you going to be able to help if we don't share the clues with you?

Raidar has been trying to get a picture of the letter from my Daddy that Uncle Seth has.

Raidar took another picture today, but I don't know if we have enough to put it all together. I asked Uncle Seth if I could look at it today and he said all it said was he could ask my Mommy for a tour of the station. If that was all it said then why is he still carrying it around?

What is your favorite type of music? We have music that plays over the stations wi-fi system, sometimes Raidar plays it for me when I can't fall asleep.

Raidar says to tell Toby:

Thank you for your concern.

Sincerely,
Stevie Mae

Woops! Trouted. Guess I shoulda read that other topic in its entirety.

I basically filled in your last gap and got:
Quote:

Seth,
Congratulations to you! If you're reading this letter, you've finally pulled together enough
guts to take the ride! Hopefully, the elevator will be comfortable
back down again. I know you're not a fan of heights, so don't look down! You should
Arrive at the station at three o'clock. I will be rushing around finishing up some last
Minute details of our meeting. You'll have time to settle in beforehand.

If you would like a tour of the station before we meet you can stop by our apartment and
ask Cordelia. She'll be happy to help! If you get too bored, feel free to take a look around
for me. There are only so many places I can be on the station, since there's no back exit
out of here!

Steven

So, we know Seth has been closely guarding this letter that seems, at least on the surface, unimportant. My guess is that there has to be some sort of code hidden within the letter.

Actually, most of what Sherlock posted - including the pictures - is already there, but he posted his exchange and I guess that is ok. Since I'm a greenhorn myself. Razz

Troutiness

About the troutiness of the things in my post, I didn't mean to intentionally post trout-y things, I just wanted to post my exchange verbatim. However, I think that in hindsight I shouldn't have posted some of those pics. therefore:

I trout myself.

Email to my 'daughter' from Stevie today:

Quote:
Subject: Wasilei Station

Dear Alexandra,

The letter doesn't sound like my Daddy's writing, but that is his signature on the bottom. Mommy said that Uncle Seth doesn't want to accept help from me because he thinks of me as a kid, and that I don't know enough about the world. She also says that sometimes people don't like to ask for help even when they need it.

My Daddy would never do something as mean as hide for ten days! Never ever. Don't ever ever say that about my Daddy again! He would never do something that would make me or Mommy cry! Daddy doesn't like those kind of games. It is probably a puzzle. Have you gotten all the pieces you need?

We have a small shop next to the Bubble Bop that is like a general store. We can also order stuff there from catalogs and have them delivered on the New Dawn. Do you know Michelle? She wears a dry suit to go swimming and says sometimes that adults wear diapers!

Yes, I would like more penpals. I guess adults can mail me, but my Mommy tells me to be careful when talking to strange adults. Maybe they could e-mail my Mommy or Davina. Maybe they should mail just Davina, because Mommy starts crying any time someone mentions my Daddy. Uncle Seth listens to Davina better than to me. He lets her help him.

Oh I didn't know it was going to be Davina's birthday!!! Davina told Raidar not to take any pictures of her. She says all her pictures come out looking bad. She says all her pictures have her with bad hair or eating stuff, so she doesn't want any pictures taken.

Here is a picture of what Wasilei Station looks like inside of Wasilei Asteroid.

Your friend,
Stevie

Latest exchange!

I emailed Stevie:

Quote:
Stevie,

I am currently listening to music by The Beach Boys. Have you ever
heard of them? My singing group is doing an arrangement of their song
"Good Vibrations." I also like to listen to some Bruce Springsteen,
Jazz music, and when I can't go to sleep, I have a collection of
Beethoven to listen to.

In my spare time, I like to read, (My current book is The Complete
Sherlock Holmes Vol. 2), Play my saxaphone, and sing.

You talked about not being able to solve the mysteries in the Sherlock
Holmes books, and I'll confess, the fact that I can't solve them
myself is frustrating. However, some of the principles Holmes
presents in the books are directly relevant to real life, such as his
quote from The Sign of the Four, "Once you have excluded the
impossible, whatever is left, however improbable, must be the truth."
Maybe that can help you out with solving whatever is going on at the
station.

I had a funny dream last night, where I rode The New Dawn up to the
station, and I got to meet you. It was really weird, especially when
I woke up, and I realized I was still in my house. Have you ever had
weird dreams like that?

How are your lessons going? Is Davi still teaching you with all of
the stuff that's been going on at the station?

Well, that's all for now!

Signing off,
Sherlock Holmes ^_^

P.S. Toby says to tell Raidar:

Thanks for the info. We have a reconstruction of the letter, which I will send soon, in an encrypted email. It would be helpful if I knew the typical cyphers and codes Steven May used, that way I might be able to figure out what the letter really means. It could be a crucial clue as to where Stephen is. Also, if you could monitor Seth, his actions may dictate what is really going on. I get the feeling that nothing is as it seems. Ciao, Toby.

Wow, if it wasn't for the fact that I read the scroll back to see what the method was and happened to find a program within the first 2 links, I still don't think I would understand this. Okay, actually I don't understand how this was created unless it was created by this specific program, because I can't recreate it by hand or with another program.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's supposedly railfence cipher, and this program solves it just fine with an offset of three.

However, doing it by hand or using the Simon Singh railfence cipher solver gets you gibberish.

From what I understand, and according to wikipedia: In the rail fence cipher, the plaintext is written downwards on successive "rails" of an imaginary fence, starting a new column when we get to the top.

So, using wikipedia's example with the plain text of We are discovered. Flee at Once this is what the rail fence should look like using 3 rows (and x as padding).

W R I O R F E O E
E E S V E L A N X
A D C E D E T C X

This would give us a cipher text of: wriorfeoeeesvelanxadcedetcx

To decrypt, you would break the cipher text into however many groups that you originally had rows, then take the 1st letter from each group, then the 2nd and so on.

However, the original cipher text of SEESYECEPECRIRUTVNAUEMNTPSFIHRORFRNEOAYNATCLREMSAYOPNEEFNPIA doesn't work like that.

If it's supposed to be an offset of 3, the rail fence should look like this:

svmusnyschnrenfaiail
teasmypoieoerconnrca
eneeatefprpfeeryptur

The cipher text we actually have does something really really odd.

First off, there are only 2 Ts in the puzzle, so we know one of them has to a breaking point in the puzzle. Taking the second T as that spot, we see the text should break up into 4 rows:

SEESYECEPECRIRU
TVNAUEMNTPSFIHR
ORFRNEOAYNATCLR
EMSAYOPNEEFNPIA

But that just gives us gibberish - but, you can see the word Steven in the first two rows. Look what happens when we take the plain text and use only 2 rails, it looks like this:

seemessayyeocpenpeeecfrnipriua
tvnauemntpsfihrorfrneoaynatclr

Note that the entire 2nd line is grouped together in the original cipher text. So it's not entirely a 3 rail fence, but its not entirely a 2 rail fence either.

It seems feasable that this cipher was done with the aid of the Temple applet because the flaws are reversable. The Temple applet seems to work fine at 2 rails, but higher rails do not agree with other applets or with doing it with pen and paper.

This is odd

On Dec 8 I ask Stevie about her puzzlebook and she gives me some websites inclucing http://www.nsa.gov/kids.

Hi Stevie and Raider,

Thanks for the pictures. The station looks like a cool place but do you ever wish you could go outside and play?

A ball of pudding sounds funny. I bet a lot of people down here would buy that if we could.

Thanks for the websites too. The ciphers were fun. I'm a little on the fence about which one I like best though.

What is your favorite subject in school? Mine is history - it's just learning stories.

Mojo and Yoshi say to tell Raider:
yuro frdg oa eko aox

Your Friends,
Qvdk, Npkp bde ZptIj

My line about being on the fence was a hint that I used the rail fence cipher to say that Raidar is ok for a dog. My signature was rot 1 just to keep things easy

Then she responds

Hi Puck,

Yeah, I'd like to be able to go outside but it takes a long time to put on the space suit. It has lots of layers and after everything is attacked I feel like I am wearing too many sweaters, pants, and socks.

We don't need any fences on the station, but sometimes I like to draw them.

I have three favorite subjects, math, reading and science.

I have another picture for you to share with our friends.

Raidar says:
YRF HNO AE KOA U AUORM

Your friends,
SIDDTV ENR IAEAAR

Raider says I'm ok for a human using an anagram. The picture was the new shot of the letter which has since been posted by someone else

Then Stevie writes to Sherlock Holmes

Quote:

Raidar says to tell Toby not to sit on the fence: SEESYECEPECRIRUTVNAUEMNTPSFIHRORFRNEOAYNATCLREMSAYOPNEEFNPIA your friend in space, Stevie

I just thought it was odd that Stevie took a clue I sent her and used it in a message to Sherlock with a similar cipher....

I wrote Stevie asking about Steven's relationship with Dr. Bronco. Here is her reply:

Quote:
Hy Hylenna,

Mommy and Daddy have told Raidar which parts of my homework he is allowed to help me with. He can help me do research for my book reports, but he is not allowed to help me with my math homework, or my spelling tests. Those I have to learn how to do myself.

Yeah, I told Uncle Seth that Alexandra's mommy found out the password, but he said someone had already told him. Uncle Seth is a good investigator, and he knows how to do some of the puzzles but some of them are hard for him.

Professor Bronco is my Daddy's boss, and also Davina's boss, even though she is his daughter. My Daddy talks about all of Professor Bronco's mottos, like "If the wheels fall off, we all get out and push," and "better, faster, cheaper." I don't think my Daddy had any arguments lately. Not even with Dr. Martha, and everyone has arguments with her. I think Dr. Martha likes Professor Bronco, but I think he just gives Dr. Martha a lot of extra work. Davina says her daddy is a hard man to love. I don't think he likes being in the station much, he keeps saying that when they next section is dug out he wants it to have more windows. I don't think they should have windows, because my daddy said that they could be where the air leaks out and we would have to get more air from the ground because of it.

Study hard for your tests and good luck!

Your friend,
Stevie

So Dr. Bronco doenst like to live in the station, what matches with the note in his profile mentioning he was treated of claustrophoby (first time I read that I thought what the hell he was doing in the station then...)

Hi Sherlock, Yes, I've heard of the Beach Boys. Have you ever heard of Claire Muldaur? Mommy has some of her music. She also has some from Joe Brent.

Wow, pretty hip tastes. West Village bohemian Afro-country-pop and esoteric 20th century mandolin chamber music. This girl should work for Pandora.

Looked through the posts and didn't see where anyone had mentioned the text that's layered in the Station Layout picture Amber Joy received ( 7 posts, up /|\ ).
I can only see one layer in the picture, but am probably doing it wrong.
Did anyone try to discect this picture, previously?
If I missed it, Trout away.
