What do you think about this combination as a solution to Vince's riddle:

5-1-9-6

This is, how I think, this works:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

"Three are odd, one is even"
This tells us, we need four number, right? So let's take A, B, C and D for those four number.

"Last number is even"
D = {2, 4, 6, 8}

"Three are odd, one is even"
D is even, so A, B and C must be odd {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

"One is in the first row"
Here we have to look up the first row of the 3 x 3 grid, that Vince has drawn.
{1, 2, 3}

"One is in the centre column"
{2, 5, 8}

"Two are a multiple of three"
{6, 9}
Since those two are the only two that are multiples of three, those have to be part of our Code Smile

"One is a multiple of two"
{4, 6, 8}
Since we have the rule "three are even, one is odd" 6 is the answer to this line

"One is in the center column"
Since we have all even numbers, the only odd one in the center column is the 5

"There is at least one number in every row and column"
5, 6 and 9 are the numbers we have so far.
The right column is okay with this rule, the second and third row too.
Now we have to find another odd number that fits this rule = {1, 3, 7}
If we take the 7, we break the rule "There is at least one number in every row and column.", because we have no number taken from the first row. Same is with the 3. So the only possible answer to this rule will be the 1.

"1st is greater than 2nd, 3rd is greater than 4th."
A > B and C > D
1, 5, 6, 9 are the numbers we have to put in this formula.
D is even so it has to be the 6. That makes C for the 9, 5 = A and 1 = B.

Greets,
PatRol

3 is also a multiple of 3, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, you are right.

It is just a guess of mine, in which I determined the word "multiple" to be a "real multiple". That's why I may be on the wrong track finally, but it's just a guess Smile

Do you guys already have some questions on what to ask Vince?

Greetz,

Draghkar, I don't have any questions for Vince right now, because I have to work up all of the information in this thread and on the blog again to get a bit deeper into it Wink

This is a solution to Guy's alternative number matrix:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The first is larger than the second.
A > B, A > C, A > D
A is even, because you can divide it by 2

The second is twice the third.
B = 2 * C
B is even, because you can divide it by 2

The third is smaller than the fourth.
C < D

The fourth is half the first.
D = A : 2

Four of the numbers are not repeated,
A != B != C != D
("!=" means: does not equal)

Three are not in the top row,
Only one of the four numbers is in the top row of the 3 x 3 grid. [1, 2, 3]

Two are not in the right row.
If two of the four numbers aren't in the right column, the other two have to be in there. [3, 6, 9]
Possible Combinations: 3 - 6, 3 - 9, 6 - 9

Let's do some math now:
A > B, A > C and A > D so A is the biggest number.
Numbers in brackets [] show a variety of possible solutions. If those are used for another math operation, the order of the numbers will stay the same.
The lines in italics represent the answers to the math operations. (I usually prefer tables or tabbed text to show this, but I don't know how to get this to work in uf Rolling Eyes

First Attempt: ---------------
A = 4
D = A : 2
D = 2
C < D
C = [1]
B = 2 * C
B = 2

Result: This does not work fine, because it breaks the rules "Three are not in the top row" and the one about no repeating numbers.

Second Attempt: ----------
A = 6
D = A : 2
D = 3
C < D
C = [1, 2]
B = 2 * C
B = [2, 4]

Result: This solution isn't possible either, because it is breaking the "first row rule" again.

Third Attempt: ----------
A = 8
D = A : 2
D = 4
C < D
C = [1, 2, 3]
B = 2 * C
B = [2, 4, 6]

Result:
If C = 1 and B = 2, we have two numbers from the first row again and only one is allowed.
C = 2 und B = 4, does not work for the solution either, because B = 4 and D = 4. No repetitions are allowed.
The only possible solution is C = 3 and B = 6.

So we were looking for the code: 8 - 6 - 3 - 4

PatRol,

Tried the code -- no go.

I am thinking this code has multiple outcomes perhaps?

I'm guessing there is only a few possibilities. Outside of that I'm
beat.

Try something else and hopefully that will work.

Good luck!

Okay, Vince's number matrix has another solution, though it was just a try Smile Now, let's give it another try.

Hm. As far as I understand this one, we don't get a precise answer out of it, do we? So what about those combinations:
9 – 3 – 5 – 4
5 – 3 – 9 – 4
6 – 3 – 7 – 2
9 – 6 – 7 – 2
7 – 6 – 9 – 2

Why don't we discuss this riddle via IRC? Let's meet in the #karma channel?

PatRol -e-> Andy wrote:
Hi Andy,

it's me again. I am sorry about this second mail in a row, but
there is more than one solution to this riddle, as you said before. I tried
some other combinations and came to these results.Please tell me if I
am wrong, but all of those combinations go one by one with the rules,
as far as I can tell:

9 - 3 - 5 - 4 (<= I already sent you this one with my last mail),
5 - 3 - 9 - 4 ,
6 - 3 - 7 - 2 ,
9 - 6 - 7 - 2 ,
7 - 6 - 9 - 2

I don't know if I have to take "real multiples of 3" (like 6 or 9) or
just "multiples of three" (like 3, 6 or 9). Same with the "mutliples of
2". Do you think that I mess up something here? Have I broken one
of those rules of the riddle? I am totally confused now. This somehow
looks like Vince is trying to keep more than one way open to escape,
speaking metaphorically.

Did you or Guy get any more information out of Vince about his other
riddle so far? (The one which told us "one of them will die".) And another
thing I am still concerned about is: What do you do, if there is a bomb in
Vince's briefcase? I don't hope so. On the other hand, I think, Vince is
not going to sacrifice himself by hiding a bomb in his briefcase. I think you have already x-rayed the briefcase to make sure, there is no bomb in there.

PatRol,

Thankyou for your continued efforts in assisting our enquiries. Let
me first say that once again I will forward a copy of each of these
codes to be tested.

Now, We have a specialist team of forensics and bomb experts at our
disposal, although we have checked extensively, there does not
appear to be any form of mechanical trap fitted to the case,
particularly a bomb.

We have no reason to suspect Vincent will cause any further harm
whilst in custody. Can you tell me more about this riddle you speak
of?

I am still a bit behind on the times as far as past 'riddles' go. I
will ask Guy to brief me. Funny, I thought I would have been the
only one Vincent had marked for death...

Theres maybe another?

- -Andy

Draghkar, now I have a question. Let's ask Vince about the other codes he wanted us to crack. And maybe we can ask about that agency that was spoken of earlier. If that is okay with all of you, guys?

Up pops the latch.

Hello everybody,

I know this is the third post of me in a row and I didn't want to do that, but the numerical matrix has been solved. That's why I posted a new message. The correct code that opened Vincent's briefcase was
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
5394.

Guy just informed me about that in an email:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Hey Patrick,

Allow me to introduce myself. The names Guy.

Andy forwarded your details to me so that I could congratulate you personally. I am leading this investigation and you are the one, if I am not mistaken, who struck Gold with our newly christened 'Numerical Matrix'.

We entered the combination 5394 and bingo! Up pops the latch.

Right now though I am not at liberty to release any information on what the contents of said case were...

When I'm granted permission (perhaps after our team has done what they want to it) I will forward copies of the enclosed material straight to you.

Since you solved the tricky riddle, it's only fair you get first glance Wink

Take care.

-Guy-

Now I hope, that the team does not take too long to give Guy the permission, so that he or Andy can tell us, what is in the case Wink

Yay, PatRol!!! Good work!

I wonder if Andy was in the room when the case was opened. Perhaps he'd be kind enough to give us an idea of what was inside.

Thanks valkyrie_lisa Very Happy

Andy asked me to hook him up on the things he missed while he was kidnapped. I haven't answered his question yet, because I myself have to look up a lot in this thread. Can someone tell me, please, if Andy already knows about this secret agency Michael speaks of in his email to Draghkar? I don't know what to tell Andy, because (as you can see in the wiki) I just only passed page 4 of this thread with re-reading it, so I am still missing lots of information except for the last two pages Wink

It's okay if you send me a pm or an email, that way you don't have to doublepost anything within this thread. Thanks for your help.

Hi Rammer,

last thing I know about is, that they wanted to grant us the permission to view the documents. We should solve the riddles on them. But this never happened... Sad

There are no news on their websites that we know about so far.

Sure, the easiest way to get to know about all this is to send them an email, asking what is going on, isn't it?

Greets,
Patrick
