[INTERACTION] Correspondence with Davina

We've had quite the conversation. Well, maybe not, but still.

It started on the blog, pre-elevator arriving on Earth:

Well, this probably won't work for you, but it has for me - learn an archaic or completely useless set of knowledge! Things I've done in the past are calligraphy and heraldry, but that's just a few examples.

Or you could try crossword puzzles. There are a bunch of pretty tough ones out there that could keep you occupied for a while - if you're having trouble finding some, I could scan a couple and send 'em your way.

Those are some interesting hobbies you have there. I've always wanted to try calligraphy and I did try to find my family coat of arms once, but my search was unsuccessful. I thought it would be a nice gift for my father last Christmas.

Then I sent an e-mail with a crossword attached:

Davina,

Mapmaker here. Hope you're doing better, and that all's going well up there. I scanned a puzzle from my November 2005 issue of GAMES Magazine of 2 star difficulty (out of 3) - I chose the middle 'cuz I didn't know how experienced you were with crosswords. By the by, I really enjoy GAMES and its sibling, Games World of Puzzles - if they'll deliver to the Maldives, I'd check out getting a subscription (that is, if they help ease your mind!).

Best wishes,

Map

Hi Map,

Thanks for the crossword! I finally just finished it! I know it shouldn't take me this long to do a crossword, but I was determined to do it without using the internet. To tell the truth, I only finished it because I've accepted the fact that I'm not going to fill in that last empty square I have.

Things aren't going well here on the station. Everyone is stressed out over Steven's disappearance. We still don't know if foul play was involved and you can tell everyone is still a bit scared. I'm trying to be strong for Stevie, but each day it gets a little bit harder.

Davina,

If you want to know that last square, I can help you out. Just let me know.

How is Stevie holding up? She seems to be confident that her friends are going to help find her daddy. She seems like a very brave girl. Is Cordelia doing well? It seems from Stevie's blog that she's extremely busy, and her work is pushing this aside in her mind.

I can imagine that this has caused all sorts of problems on the station. I hope that that everyone else there isn't freaking out! It seems like the beginning of some horror movie, with people disappearing and whatnot. I imagine the search is still going strong, though, and that people are generally doing well.

Let me know if you need any more distractions - although it seems you're busy enough as it is.

The one I'm stuck on is the first letter in 51 across. I'm sure I must have some of the other letters around it wrong because I have ?BLOGY which doesn't seem quite right. Wink

Stevie had a hard day yesterday, but I think she's doing better now. Cordelia has been burying her emotions in her work. I've been working quite a bit too, but only because my father wants to take the station to "the next level". Personally, I think his idea is ridiculous considering the current situation, but he didn't want to listen to my objections.

I wouldn't say that people here are freaking out, but there definitely is quite a bit of tension in the air. When I was eating breakfast this morning in the cafeteria, there was a loud crash in the kitchen. I don't think I've ever seen the security guards run so fast.

I just hope that somehow Steven comes back and everything is back to
normal before Christmas.

51 across is EULOGY - I'm guessing you put ICBM for 43 down instead of - well, I'll let you figure it out. Hope this helps you finish it off.

I gotta say, you've piqued my curiousity—what do you mean by "the next level"? I understand that you might not be able to tell me, that it might be Top Secret Classified Information, but I'm wondering right now what the next level could be for an orbiting space colony on a huge asteroid. To me, that's the next level in and of itself!

Is there really anywhere for Steven to be on the station? It sounds like he couldn't be in the ventilation system, as Dr. Crappert keeps that flowing freely quite well. Regardless, I fervently hope that Dr. Mae is found soon, and in good health.

Currently waiting on a response.

I know what "the next level" should mean... paying customers on the station.

Yet seeing in in quotes like that just makes me.. very nervous for reasons I cannot explain logically.
