When MindCandy contacted me

I was contacted about using rccypt as a tool around March 2005. This means they probably used version 1.4 or 1.5. In terms of the encryption, there is no difference between the tools.
The changes were all security things to resolve the problem of being able to see keys using "ps" etc.
1.5 forks and runs the encryption engine as a seperate process hiding the command line options, to minimise the window of opportunity to grab (for example) the name of a key file.
1.4 will be faster to run multiple times as it doesn't do this.

Cheers,

Rich.

I don't know if im grasping the concept of this program right, but presumably you input a key (sort of password) and it decrypts the message?
Presuming this is correct, could the word be cinqo?
It is spanish for five, and sounds like "Cinq cow" for five cows. Just thought it might fit in somewhere!

Ok, got some stoopid qustions I'm afraid so please bear with me.

1. The sourceforge thing doesn't seem to be working, it says that there are no files associated to download. Has this been shelved?

2. What do I need to do to use the rccrypt app.? I've downloaded the Windows .exe. I'm assuming I need to run it from the command line, and against another file, but could someone please point me at the download for the file to decrypt and give me a hint as to what the commands are?

Thanks,

*Cats*

Hi all, Since I don't know shit about encryptions or whatever you been talking about, how exactly am i going to be able to solve this card without being given a direct answer?

I don't like cheating, if you can call it that, but like I read somewhere "we shouldn't spend two years on one card".

I dont really think that i must format my drives and install Linux to get this RCcrypt to work either..

At this point i feel it would be easier to learn to read japanese blind-writing.. Sad

Cheers for the info Richard, was worth a try anyway.

It says there's no files to download because I haven't put any up there!!! I'm still working on this BOINC framework and trying to figure out how I'm supposed to use it properly.

I'm now in 2 minds about the project as it may be that someone clever or lucky may just hit on the right keyword and then my work would be useless...I was originally thinking that it would be relatively easy to link the RC-Crypt algorithm with BOINC and just slap a few basic GUI's together but its not as simple as I had hoped.

Which version did you download (i.e. from whose post did you click the attachment?) Yes you need to run it from the command line. If you just type the filename of app in it should bring up the help telling you how to use it.

It's not cheating as we are being asked to decrypt it, Von's hint even told us the name of the program MC used to encrypt the message in the first place!!! But I agree it shouldn't take 2 years to solve one card.

You don't need to install Linux to run the app as it's zipped with the relevant Cygwin dll's so you can just run it in Windows from the command line.

Good luck with the japanese.

Ah I know what you mean I'm having enough trouble with trying to get Seti to work with it and the dam program is designed for it!!!

Hi (first post), Very Happy

First of all, being new to this whole ARG thing,
could I just say what a positive, skillful and supportive community
there is here. I hope I can make a worthwhile contribution.

On with the questions:

1 - Using RCCRYPT, how would I know if I had input the right 8-letter key,
(i.e. what will the program show if successful?)

2 - How many keys should be attempted? and what difference will a much
larger number make (technically speaking)?

Thanks

As above, just new to perplexcity and the whole ARG thing. Enjoying solving the easier cards and was very excited to get my first two silvers (this and Differently Lethal)

Want to help in the solve for both but a lot of the chat here is way over my head. Can someone post a couple of quick bullets on how to get the rccrypt tool to work.

Reading through the whole thread definatley think rccrypt is the way to go, though it may be useful to play more with the date theory, going to google stuff for 8th Dec or 12th Aug 1964 to see if anything jumps out for this key.

Edit: Brief searching has Teri Hatcher born on 8th Dec 1964 - she was in superman (a kind of hercules) has anyone tried "superman" yet?

Have now found the wiki for this dicsussion which includes instructions and I think I am currently running keys! Started with "00000000supe0000 65536" which didn't take long, then "00000000s0000000" which is still running, as above how do I know when it gives me something worthwhile and am I on the right tracks here?

Hi all,

If we are looking for an 8 character password this page has plenty:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geryon

and it's to do with Hercules.

The reason I got this is because I was wondering what 5 cows was in Ancient Greek. I found out what 5 is, it's E (Epsilon)and whilst I was looking for cows my google search came up with this. Any use?

I can't get the darned rccrypt to work so I'll annoy my brothers over the festive period when he comes round to steal my DVD's. Laughing Hopefully, one or the other of them (both computer software engineers) will be able to help me. Doubt it though - I can't even get their advice on what DVD-ROM to buy that is (or could be made) multi-regional.

Head here:

http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/index.php/Rccrypt_Work_Unit_checkout

This is the wiki I referenced above. If you have the rccrypt file unzipped on your PC, use the command line feature in windows and once you are in the directory just type "rccrypt 00000000000000 16777214" with the zeros being a 16 digit hex key. If you have an eight letter word use the code on the right of the above page to translate it into HEX, Superman becomes 53757065726d616e, different keys for SUPERMAN etc. (I had missed this point before)

At least this is my understanding and I am happy for anyone to correct me. Very Happy So far SUPERMAN is out, now trying Superman.

- no luck with Superman, Geryones or GERYONES

This may be absolutely naive of me (and probably is), but since I can't recall anyone mentioning this from when I read through the topic, here it goes:

If we were to end up with a key that produces no null characters, could we just then treat it as a cryptogram with non-alphabet symbols?

It's just mathematical thinking: reduce the problem to one easier to solve. So, even if I'm off, there might be a way to deduce how many characters exist, and start scraping around from there.

(Haven't really been trying on this one, and I couldn't solve the last puzzle on Brian's Trail, but figured I'd go ahead and say it anyway; who knows, right?)

Ok, so.....

How do I know if the key I have tried is the correct one?

It's not comparing it against anything, or is it?

Should I get some sort of output that tells me when it's worked or what?

Just a quick question.....

I was going to write a batch file to go through 8 letter words, but would people suggest American or English spelling? (or both, but this will take longer......)
Confused
