Perhaps it's a cryptic-crossword-style pun: start with "l-thalidomide", subtract "lethal", and end up with the 'difference' -- in this case, 'idomid'.
(I'd try it myself, but I don't have any cards.)

There are various other systematic names for it, but I suspect it's either a more obscure chemical or something more cryptic still.

Incidentally, someone else said that the crystal must be inorganic, but I don't think that's the case.

Hi, I'm back again to risk another trouting (verb?)

At the start of this thread, people were talking about this being a simple crystal, and these last pages are full of ever more obscure chemicals.

How about a different tack?
The pic is crystallography - and perhaps that is all it tells us - nothing more.
The title is "Differently Lethal". This could be a cryptic clue telling us that we are looking for an anagram of "lethal".

Going down this road, I tried Hallet who seems (in google) to be mentioned along with crystallography. (It's an odd spelling as most Hallett's have 2 T's.

It was wrong, but could this be a valid train of thought?

A Ms Rachel Morgan Theall, is also a chemist at the University of Arizona

I think this route might take some time, there are quite a few crystallographers out there!

apparently nobody paid attention to my post back on page 10 so I attempted to try it myself Smile

I managed to find 8 atoms of the unit cell. There is most likely 1 or 2 more. One of the problems is that it is very difficult to see some of the peaks on the images posted in this thread.

The following image is what I have so far... it is color coded to show which peaks/atoms are grouped together. I have located 8 atoms, so there are 8 groupings of peaks (each group has the same shape because that is how a patterson map works). The lines connecting the peaks were arbitrarily chosen and do not represent any sort of chemical structure - they are ONLY to help visualize/clarify which peaks are grouped together - but the relative positions of the peaks within a group directly correlate with the positions of the atoms in a unit cell. I added two peaks at -3 0 12 and symmetrically at 3 0 -12 to account for peaks that were not apparent in the images but were implied from the structure. Also, all peaks not yet accounted for are in grey.

Hi I've just starting with this (been on it solid for 2 days now); I thought I had it yesterday with:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Sulphur as it can take on three forms (remember those chemistry lessons?) one of which is monoclinic. Sulphur is also used in the manufacture of disinfectants and explosives.; but neither sulphur or monoclinic sulphur was accepted as the correct answer!

My husband is now working with a script to aid the identification of the atoms in the crystal and is using a crystal modelling package.

I hope someone gets this soon as I'm starting to dream about this card in my sleep Embarassed

Is it just me...or does the image look a little bit like

Just a thought

I don't have the card, but I am interested in the unsolved cards more than the ones which have already been solved (I have a bad habit of cheating if it is possible)

I have seen a few suggestions about sulphur and potassium, and I had a thought of something which is differently lethal and also something which everyone would have heard of. I have read the thread from start to finish and it doesn't seem to have been mentioned, and it is not one of the fails from the fail list.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
gunpowder?

Not sulfur, gunpowder or prion (just a silly guess)

If only we had looked more closely at the link that The First Speaker had given us at the start, we would've saved all this trouble

Anyways, for all those wondering, the answer is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Benzoic Acid. It was the second preview file in the app that The First Speaker gave us the link to incase you are curious.

My first first solve, and it was a silver!!!
