Just looking back over some of these posts I found some stuff on the 5 of cups, and a link to tarot, I'm not sure if this was followed up or not but the description of that card seems to fit the current PerplexCity situation quite well:
Quote:
Synopsis
Regret over past actions, sorrow, melancholy.

General Description
The 5 of Cups is the card of distress, sorrow, and melancholy. It shows something broken that had been important to us up to now. It also says that we are not left alone with our pain and can reckon with the understanding and sensitive support of friends. However, this consoling aspect should not be misread as an indication that the cause of our pain is only imaginary and we should reckon with the speedy return of high spirits. This card can often be an indication of our own recklessness; that we have thought too little of something that is valuable to us and thereby destroyed it. In any case, it shows that there is a solution. It calls upon us not to stay in this dismal state any longer than necessary.

Oh, and if anybody's interested, there's an "Entropy" tarot deck as well: http://www.wicce.com/gibby5.html

Doing a search on google for eodmf theres a string of text for a bike website (see text below), when asked to translate it comes up with chinese characters, maybe the "made in china" is a clue hinting at translating the heat sensitive characters and its some sort of phonetic chinese.
Then again......maybe not! Sorry I'm running out of ideas.

Could it be possible that we have already cracked the code but the answer is in the form of a rough Chinese translation.

I'm going back to try and convert all my results to english assuming they are in a romaji style translation of the Chinese language.

If anyone tries this and gets any kind of result please post it.

I have a feeling that it could be to do with the tempertaure at which the characters disappear, as that could be the key for the solitaire cipher. beacuse entropy is to do with Thermodynamics it would seem highly possible

I speak Mandarin, but haven't seen any pinyin (the Chinese equivalent of romaji) in my results so far. I don't know if you speak Mandarin or not - happy to translate any text if you want.

I've tried jiqijiaotache (=motorbike) and motuoche (=motorcycle) as the passkey. No joy.

But I think you're on the right lines, and that the passkey is the name of the motorbike, which is made in China. I don't have the card, and so can't confirm, but could the bike be the Chang Jiang (see this picture). It looks similar to the Yamahas listed above, and is the most famous Chinese motorbike.

Chang Jiang literally means Long River, and is also the modern Chinese name for the Yangtze River. This opens up a world of possible Passkeys to try.

I've been searching around the web for some inspiration on the solution for this.

Apart from the Solitaire and Tarot links already discussed (which, to me, seem the most likely route), I have also stumbled across a few things that might be of help:

1. Djinn is derived from a Genie (Jini) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djinn)
2. Jini is a network architecture for the construction of distributed systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JINI)
3. Jini defines a lookup service that is a fundamental part of the federation infrastructure for a djinn, the group of devices, resources, and users that are joined by the Jini technology infrastructure (http://java.sun.com/products/jini/)
4. Jini uses PKI encryption

I'm not sure if there's any mileage in this but it seems credible on the basis that the Djinn Worm found

In relationship to the tarot link, does anyone think there might be a link clue in the fact that the "Five of Cups" card has 3 cups overturned and 2 remaining upright?

This was just published in the latest Sentinel newsletter.

Unsolved Murders
Although crime was down this year, even in the Old Town, two murders have remained unsolved -- a shameful mark on the city's police record. Bernardo Holyoke, the proprietor of Old Town drinking establishment the Five of Cups, was murdered in his home in late April. Later in the year, PCBC consulting economist Monica Grand was found murdered in her Ascendancy Point flat. Both cases remain unsolved, and the police indicate they have no firm leads.

Could Bernardo or Holyoke be a key?

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas!

Hmmm

Hi all!

Surprisingly, holyoke does not generate a key for me(when placed into http://www.cif.rochester.edu/~la002k/solitaire.htm). Also, if the puzzle is completly independant, then technically we should need to know about anything going on in perplex city (I think??). I tried entering "garnet" as a key, because if he is given the pack then obviously he's got to know or guess the key, so thought it might be his name. Ah well, ganna keep racking my brains on this one!

[Update]

Thinking along the lines of card ciphers, I started looking up otrher ones, dont know if anyone would be interested in this powerpoint presentation I found http://web.mit.edu/%7emfarry/cryptoproject/consolidatedsolitaireversion2.ppt

Im guessing all the cards are in the original posistion because the card states "they were all new and untouched" apart from the joker, so its either its just cause of the star, or its in a different place. Also, (sorry just spinning therioes here) I tried putting the joker next to the 5 of hearts (to do with the bar) and still got nothing, but if anyone else wishes to try please do so!! Cheers!

Dan

Website...

Came across this site: http://www.thecararchive.com/new-3208073-55.html

Makes me wonder what kind of encoding that page is in...is it another language maybe? I found it by searching EODMF (the first "word" in the code) in yahoo. Hope this helps...

Also, evertime the page is refreshed, the text under "Adverstise on this site" changes...sometimes from the code we are trying to solve to text, and sometimes to an incomprehensible list of characters

Two ads on Harley Davidsons, I think this is almost certainly grasping at straws but could it be relevent?

EDIT: Probably completely irrelevent, just seen the bit in the catagory that says "Motorcycles Harley" Embarassed

Hey everyome, back after christmas! Wishing you all a happy new year!

Nice to see that things are still stuck in the same place since before christmas Smile

Im just wondering if there is something about Djinn that we should know other than what we have already been told in the sentinel that could help solve this? perhaps a historical reference to Djinns or genies' whatever you wanna call them?

Either that or I requote my theory on the joker with a star on it bit Smile

here goes

Hi everyone, my two penneth

as has been mentioned, if you use solitair with a standard deck to decode the heat sensitive letters you get

ARTOXYZOPALUBJQNKCNFTBABP

and to me this seems a little less random than any other possible cleartext I've seen posted

ART - ?
OXYZO - a rather interesting ?
PALUB - ?
JQNK - Jack QueeN King
CNFTBABP - ?

again just something to look at, i certainly thought that "o xyz o" seemed a little suspicious to be completely random

Very Happy

This may seem a little basic, but going back to what sabrewulf said, and reviving the idea of termodynamics as more than a clue to exposing hidden text, I found this
Quote:
Thermodynamic entropy was first introduced in the context of classical thermodynamics by Rudolf Clausius in 1850, in his analysis of Sadi Carnot's 1824 work on thermodynamic efficiency; although it was not until 1865 that Clausius singled the quantity out and gave it the name entropy.

In 1877, Ludwig Boltzmann formulated the alternative definition of entropy as a measure of statistical "mixedupness" or disorder, soon refined by J. Willard Gibbs, which is now regarded as one of the cornerstones of the theory of statistical mechanics.

Claude Shannon introduced the very general concept of information entropy, used in information theory, in 1948. The view of seeing entropy in statistical mechanics as merely a particular application of Shannon's information entropy is largely due to the campaigning of E. T. Jaynes, starting in 1957.

and wondered if the entropy clue might suggest names of thermodynamics positors as keywords for decryption?

I thought the concept of information entropy particularly interesting...

I may well be completely off track, specially as you seem to be thinking along motorbike manufacturing now...

Anyway, thought I'd chuck that in see if it helped.

Have a Happy New Year!

Spinning off on a mahOOsive tangent now. Using Thermodynamics and motorcycles I did a search and came up with the following.

Quote:
The thermodynamics of QuadroRhomb as a heat engine has the next advantage: during the intake and compression strokes the working substance contacts with the relative cold zone of the immobile plate (3) and only later goes into contact with the hot zone. Such a space division leads to a high efficiency of the machine. Because of its simplicity the production of QuadroRhomb needs only a small quantity of raw materials and energy that is better for the environment. There are three color demo-programs for computer having MS DOS. That we will be more then hapopy to send you

http://www.4c-foresee.com/qrengine/

but the most interesting for me was this description of the 2nd law of thermodynamics:

Quote:
Hot coffee gets cold. Ice cream melts. Material structures fall apart. Things wear out and run down. These commonplace phenomena are illustrative (approximately) of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which says that in a closed, isolated system (one where no energy or matter enters or leaves) entropy (disorder) spontaneously increases.

http://www.pastpeak.com/archives/2005/04/

This would indicate that the the code on the pack shouldn't be changed just shuffled as the title of the card says. I know people have already tried this with no success but this explanation gives me a glimmer of hop that it might just be that. Maybe someone who reads Mandarin or another form of Chinese could decipher it. I'm starting to think the solitaire cipher has very little to do with this, despite the strong indication it is just that.

Oh it also shows that the virus is from the academy system itself and not introduced by an outside influence, hence "outside looks should leave you cold."

Ok, worked on a bit further and found some semi-interesting stuff, thought I would share in case anyone picks up on something. Firstly Ive been trying different decoding messages, thinking that possibly the star on the joker is a mislead (I doubt it, but I am so fed up with solitaire atm, lol), so I tried a few. Oddest results I got was with enigma coding, which provided me with full-stops and commas in the text:

LIOLNPOMP.WQRJNKDARAZHZTAUQILLNF,GDNQSE.TRAG.PQIINPPOUVVCCUR.NUBKJMPNERNTUCJ,CQWVH.PAQQGCNCVCOSDD.DNK,C,P

(Although please note I am encoding from WBBMC to YKZPL, ignoring the disapearing letters, and using LUL as the code for enigma)

I have also been looking at the entropy clue, and as a cryptic crossword clue I feel it would give something like ICY (I see - outward look, and ice is cold) although putting that in the solitaire proggie hasnt helped. I also wrote a bit of java to dictionary attack it, but it was flawed in some way when looking for particular words within each decoded message, so unfortnatly thats another dead end Sad

Lastly, Im not to up on the detail of how solitaire works, but I started looking around at different ways to encode messages with cards and came across "Klondike" (I know, a varient of the solitaire game), just wondering if its different at all to the way solitaire works:

http://www.lunchwithgeorge.com/lwg_deck.html

Will post when and if I get any more Smile ATM this puzzle has annoyed me for a week of constant work on it (Im slow, lol), so Ive given in and emailed garnet now, lol. Lets see if he'll say anything -

Dan

[Edit]
Ok couldnt resist looking up more. Just thinking while looking over Kurts blogs, he likes to mention entropy when talking about earth and the cube (sept. 16th, august 31st). Connection maybe?
