Fictionsuit

This is known as the hardest puzzle in the -- oh wait, no it isn't.

Here's the story: a little over a year ago, Ouroboros and I (not FL-Ouroboros, the other one) finally came up with something we wanted to do with this really out-of-control wiki framework I was coding. The framework ended up crashing and burning, but that's not important. Both of us had been involved with everything2.com, which, for those unfamiliar with it, is sort of like a cross between Wikipedia and a cocktail party where everyone's drunk and a little hostile. Said hostility was getting to us; also, we were looking for a place where it was okay to do what Jorge Luis Borges called "fictives" - short fictions that adopt the voice and tools of non-fiction, and that aren't necessarily oriented around story as such. We wanted Wikipedia for stuff that didn't exist - for stuff that would only come to exist in the act of documenting it with others.

We launched Fictionsuit on September 1, 2005, and so far there are two public world-building projects (plus a couple of entirely prosaic reference wikis we keep closed and use for our own stuff). One of them is sort of ARG-ish in its themes and the way it's unfolding, a bit like a puzzle in reverse. The other is a TV Guide for one very strange cable network, and has become a very fun little collection of writings if I say so myself.

In theory, there will be much, much more, but our current user base is kind of maxed out in terms of creative capacity. To create more projects, we need more of the kind of troublemakers who hang out here.

This is the first and last time I'm going to pimp my site to this degree here on Unfiction. It's not a trailhead, it's not a puzzle, it's not even exactly a game (yet - we have some features in development for more structured collab-fiction game-y things). But we had the spirit of ARGs in mind when we built it; I think those who love ARGs specifically for the way they unfold a world will want to have a peek at what we're creating. Come on by; we'd love to have you.

My apologies to anyone who's tried to visit - site's been down for the last few days and remains that way for now. I'll let you know when. Don't ever host with TextDrive, it's pretty unpleasant.

(Edit, one miraculous hour later: back up.)
