[XBOX] Modded Xbox & Gun?

I'm trying to (legally) copy Gun to the hard drive of my modded Xbox but it keeps failing. Anyone have any success with this? Is it a copy protection issue?

Huh... how can you use the word "legally" with the words "copy" and "modded' in the same sentence?

I bought the game. Fair use applies. Just like ripping a CD to mp3.

Please go look up what the term "Fair Use" means with regard to copyright law. It's not meant for what you're using it for.

While US Copyright Law (pretty sure it's section 117) allows the creation of a legal backup copy (see the link for the types and scope of those copies), Placing that copy on the hard drive of a modded Xbox doesn't really fall under the scope of allowed uses. It could be argued that it's not a legal copy, as the media you bought was never intended to run on anything other than a disc.

When you consider that the box is modded in the first place and there's a lot of reverse engineering and code circumvention going on to allow games to run on it in the first place, it's all a slippery slope in and of itself.

While you've stated that you have a legal copy of GUN, the process that you are using to try and transfer your purchased copy of the media to your Xbox hard drive doesn't necessary fall under the terms of use for the Xbox you modded or the disk you're trying to copy.

I don't say this to rain on your fun. There are a number of people here who were part of the I Love Bees ARG and have a great fondness for a certain game studio. Some (if not most) of those people know they can't do much to stop software piracy, but probably don't find the idea of someone making money off of (or taking money away by) the copying of Halo2 to a modded Xbox. Regardless of your benign use of the technology at your disposal, the methods you use are not solely deployed by those meaning no harm.

Maybe my sentiment is in the minority here. All I'm saying is don't expect to ask such questions in a forum like this and get lots of helpful responses.

I'm not going to argue with you about it, especially since I see nothing in 117 precluding copying the software to a hard drive. You're welcome to start another thread about your perception of the legality or ethicality of it. As I don't believe this is something that's been argued in court, discussion at this level is pretty much moot, IMO.

BTW, Halo 2 copies over quite well.

(and resize your avatar! Wink )

Since this thread's going nowhere fast, it's probably better off locked.

Yes this is better off locked, and we don't want to go down the "this is illegal" road.

So..
