[UPDATE] Path of Least Time 5th January 2006

Quote:
Gillit Road
Thursday, January 5 2006, 05:58 PM

Some time ago, in early December, I received a series of emails telling me about a hidden message on the Viard CD that was released on Earth. The message apparently read:

"I can't tell you who I am, they'd kill me if they find out how much I know. You know who they are. Follows something that you need to know. A detective here in Perplex City, Helena Frye is an agent of The Third Power. The Third Power stole the Cube. They killed people. Who knows what they're capable of. If you're sensible just stay away, but if you want to help us, if you want to find the Cube, wait for the Ceremony of the Kindling of the Flame. Exactly 7 days after that send someone to the abandoned subway station on Gillit Road at 10pm. You'll find out enough to prove that Helena is a spy."

Although I like watching them in your movies, I'm not a secret agent, or a spy, or a hero. I can't fire guns, and I don't know any martial arts. The only things I can do are run away very fast, and programme computers; not quite the sort of skills that would be useful in snooping in on a meeting between killers. And so after I read your emails, I filed them away somewhere hidden; I know what happened to Bernardo Holyoke, Pietro Salk and Monica Grand, and I don't want that to happen to me.

Over the winter holidays, I tried to avoid thinking about the subject. It wasn't difficult - I started going out with Miranda not long after my last post (we really hit it off after meeting up in Polygon Park), so I was pretty occupied. She's pretty amazing, she went to a college near where my parents live, and eventually she wants to get into the Academy to study anthropology. I think she'll make it.

The most surprising thing is that she's got the same birthday as me; I know that the chances of such a thing are in fact higher than you might imagine (reminds me of a certain puzzlecard, in fact) but it's still unusual. I've always had problems with remembering birthdays, even when I programme them into my key, so it's definitely convenient that I don't have to remember hers. What a romantic I am, eh?

Well, we did have a romantic New Year's Eve. We both visited my parents' place and then met up with my old schoolfriends at a bar; I think they were all pleasantly surprised that I'd gotten a girlfriend, although I suspect they were expecting someone else. Anyway, I got her tickets to the PCAG final as a present, and she bought me a scarf and forced me to wear it to prevent any future colds.

After we returned to the city, we went for a walk at the Mobius Strip. I remember standing at the centrepoint on the Strip with my arm around Miranda and looking out to the sea, when we started talking about the weather. Since the city is near the sea, it never really gets too cold, but there's a blustery wind that always sweeps across the water at this time of year. Unusually, the surface was almost as still as a mirror, reflecting a bitingly cold cloudless sky above. She wondered when the first snow would come. It couldn't be too long from now, she said.

I kept myself buried beneath my new scarf, and I didn't say anything but just pulled her a little closer. Over the holidays, I'd been dreading the snow - the Kindling of the Flame is seven days after the first snowfall, you see. I'd already decided that I wasn't going to go, but I didn't like to be reminded of that fact. And to be completely honest, it's not just that I don't want to end up like Holyoke or Salk or Grand. It's worse than that - I simply never really cared about them; I didn't know them or talk to them like Violet did. Perhaps this means I have a heart of stone, but it's true. Even in Perplex City, many people die every day, and I don't cry over them.

Yet standing there with Miranda, I felt like a coward. She actually looks up to me, because I'm in the Academy, and even more than that, I'm a member of the 'elite' Cube Retrieval Team. What sort of person am I, I thought to myself, if I'm not prepared to fulfil my duty properly, in retrieving the Cube by any means possible? I can pretend that I don't care about murders, but while I'm not a hero or a spy, I am still a member of the CRT and what I am here to do is to find the Cube, and return it safely.

So, I will be going to Gillit Road. I've looked up the plans for the station and have found a number of routes in and out that should allow me to get there safely. Once I'm there, I'll use my key to record any evidence against Helena Frye and the Third Power. Miranda was right: the first snow won't be long from now. The meteorological services predict that it'll happen within the next few days, and then there's only a week until the meeting. I won't be taking anyone else along with me, and I haven't told Miranda or Violet. If it really is dangerous, I don't want anyone else to be involved.

There is one thing you can do for me. I would like to know who recorded the message on Viard's CD. I considered emailing Helix Hesh myself, but then stopped when I realised that no-one off Earth is supposed to have heard it, certainly not anyone in the Academy. It'll be less suspicious if you ask him about the message.

Greetings, Mr. Hesh!

I was wondering -- can you tell me about the Viard album 'The Silver City'? particularly, I am wondering about who is represented on the album. You see, there are some voices, here and there, in a fFew tracks, and we don't know who they are. like fFor example on track 10, "When We Were Young", towards the end, there's someone talking? then after that is a very interesting rythmic piece, which I wonder if you can say who is playing that as well?

Sorry to be such a bother, Mr. Hesh. I'm editing the Earth-based Perplex City wiki, which is a big encyclopedia of all sorts of information, and it is my specific responsibility to organize this sort of thing.

Cheers!

*He pulled the goggles down to cover his eyes and grabbing his ski poles launches himself full length down the unspoilt mountainside.

*He looks around at the unmistakeable crack of gunfire, to see, closing in fast, also on skis, a pair of crack monkey-ninja-assassins, bearing a fearsome array of weaponry.

*Ducking lower, he evades the vicious torrent of simian-bullets, cutting in and out of the tree cover.

*The deafening rumble, like the stomach of a gorilla who has missed both breakfast *and* lunch today, and is now seeking a lightweight afternoon nibble, alerted him to the almost inevitable cinematic convention of the avalanche as it hurtled towards him and his pursuers.

*As the slabs of icy death bear down upon our hero and his would-be murderers, he reaches into his pocket and throws back what appear to be a couple of banana skins. The foolish primates cannot possibly avoid their slippery yellow fates and whilst one hits his banana skin and is swallowed by the maw of the avalanche, the other commits the fatal error of thinking he has escaped...looking back over his shoulder, he careens unwittingly into a handily placed tree (Cue comedy "Wack wack waaaack" sound effect)

*As our hero gives a grim, and yet still lantern-jawed side profile view, he realises that he is about to run out of mountainside and resigning himself to his fate, soars over the edge of the crevasse...only to be plucked from the air by a pair of passing penguins (The sworn natural enemies of evil monkeys, obviously)

*The penguins circle for a moment, before spotting the target, a small mountainside cabin, all logs, open hearths and huge fire insurance premiums...

*As the penguins deposit him onto the roof, he shins down the drainpipe and spotting the open bedroom window, reaches into his backpack. Then checks his pockets. The the backpack again.

*A sorrowful cry of "Bugger it. Sodding chocolates. Bloody women" is heard to emanate from our hero as he mournfully trudges off back up the mountain.

Because, of course, women don't perpetuate the myths about heroes at all....pfft...

Wink

er, my email:

Quote:
Dear Mr. Hesh,

In the process of reviewing your product, Viard's The Silver City, my colleagues and I encountered a shoddily-hidden message recorded at the end of the disc. Normally we'd overlook it, but our main reviewer would like to make sure proper credit goes to the artist, whom we can't verify as Viard. Could you perhaps shed some light on the creator of this mystery track?

Wonder what other ones got sent and which he'll respond to, if any Wink

Isn't it possible that Hesh was completely ignorant of the message until now? After all, it could have been snuck in by anyone working on the production/mastering process towards the Earth release...

Even if he does know, I'd be very surprised if we got a straight answer at this point. Wink

Here's what I sent:

Quote:
Dear Mr.Hesh,

I am a fan from Earth and I recently purchased your latest album. I am a big fan of synthanesia and electronica and your album fit perfectly into my collection. It's a great collection of tracks; I can only dream of producing tracks as well as you!

My favorite tracks are 'heartfelt', 'treasured chest', 'inversion' and 'when we were young'. Inversion in particular sounds a lot like some of Akira Yamaoka's work which is amongst my all time favorites.

Incidently, as a fellow computer music dj myself I was wondering what effects you used on the voices? In particular the ones used on 'when we were young'. I'd also be interested in knowing what kit you used, both hardware and software.

Also, if it's possible, could you please tell me who did the vocals as I would like to ask them if they would be willing to do some vocals for some of my own tracks.

Cheers
Neuromancer -- Earth

To which I've recieved the auto-responder message:

Thanks for writing. Due to the volume of mail I receive, I rarely respond
personally. If this is an important matter, I will get back to you soonest.

woo!! The first time I've ever emailed an in-game addy. I wonder if I was subtle enough...

Patrick, it's a possibility but most producers will almost always listen to the first cd 'off the press' to make sure it's of the quality they expect. However, after listening to the track again I realise that there's quite a big pause between the message and the end of the track so it may have been skipped in the 'Quality Assurance' stage....oh well, I'm sure he'll find the message now if he didn't know about it earlier.

I'm going to tell Kurt not to go alone. I'm really proud of him for going and putting his life on the line, but perhaps the brain being the face isn't the best, safest move we can make. I also plan to wish him well with Miranda, and to stay vigilant (in the same order but seemingly unconnected, natch.)

Who agrees?
(And I'll send it myself. No need to break the mailbox!)

Miranda is pushing all his buttons...this makes me suspicious...they should be having terrible disagreements by now...she's a baddie. (note that lots of the academy team and those associated have suddenly developed friends...I've said this before, but I don't like it, not one little bit, they should be kept in antisocial boxes.

Definitely should at least inform someone as back-up...the reason he's going is out of some misguided sense of heroics; his initial rationalisation of the situation was that he wasn't going to go, and this appraisal seems sound.

Ok, a couple of thoughts on a couple of points...

I would think it very strange that Hesh wouldn't be aware of the message, or indeed sanctioned its presence. I'm sure the final copy would have been listerned too once completed and pressed and I'm sure that even if Hesh didn't listen all the way through he would have noticed that the CD still had a long time to run after the music had supposedly finished.

Also, I think we should send Kurt alone to Gillet Road as the more people there the more chance of being spotted. He should just take his big old scarf and wrap himeslf up in it as a disguise.* This is not to say that he shouldn't tell anyone else and should have his key set to auto-record and send alerts if things go wrong but I still say one man will be less obvious than a crowd.

*Actually, scotch that idea, if we are not trusting of Kurt's new girlfriend then we shouldn't trust any gifts given as they may include unknown gagets/tracers etc that could give him away. (Or could just be bright pink and make him stand out like a sore thumb!)

1) Kurt is going to go alone. He isnt going to answer to a whiny email. The story is naturally progressing and its Kurts job to go. Leave him be.

2) regarding viards album, this is from the hesh records site :

Quote:
The circumstances regarding its release and the story behind the various introspective tracks are confused and wrapped in rumour and intrigue. Some five months ago, a package arrived at Helix's villa on the Mobius Strip in Perplex City. Upon opening the faded brown envelope, Helix found a memory card simply labelled 'Viard The Silver City.'

Excited, he immediately loaded up the media and sat transfixed by what he heard. Helix had for many years been largely uninvolved with the label, but was inspired to return to work with Viard personally. Keen to get in touch with his old protege, Helix called Viard's key, hoping that the elusive character would for once respond.

Static burst into a bright image -- it took a while before Helix realised that he was looking at the sun sparkling over a beautiful deep green sea. Viard came into view briefly and all Helix could hear were the words, 'I've got to go... the music explains everything.'

Hesh didnt do much by the sounds of it. I'm suprised he would know who put the voices in, because he got the recording from Viard. Unless of course he edited it in later. But this Viard is a bit of an enigma.

Well if hes gonna email kurt and whine and cry, mind candy might think its the "majoritys" wish.

Its silly. Kurt is going. He was going to go anyway, regardless of what anyone said or did. Leave him be.
