I just found some info that might help.
Look at page 3. http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2003/cs6262_fall/digital_steganography.pdf
Not sure yet if this will get us anywhere but could use some help trying it.

I checked out the technique outlined in tallerbird's steg pdf and attempted to apply it to frame 1. Basically, I went through pixel-by-pixel and identified the HTML number of each -- because, curiously enough, each number goes #ababab, where ab is some combination of digits and letters, like #747474, the most commonly recurring one.
I thought, 'huh, maybe it's hex,' so I went through a whole bunch of 'em before I realized it might take me thirty minutes just do one line of pixels. :o

But in any case, this is what I got before I stopped:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
4B 74 00 65 01 73 78 74 EB 74 4C 65 B0 73 99 74 40 74 6C 65 09 73 00 74 21 74 3F 65 0A 73 A6 74 24 74 AD 65 65 73 F5 74 85 74 12 65 BB 73 B7 DF 74

Translating it from hex produced a lot of gibberish, but also a lot of Es and Ts.

If you were to save each frame as a bitmap file you could then open it in a text editor (e.g. textpad) and read off the (RR,GG,BB) hex values which would all be listed. However I am struggling to find a neat bmp to ASCII converter - any ideas? We would also be left with an immense amount of data from which to do something - off the top of my head, tens of thousands of hex values per frame!

Another route I would like to explore would be to see if renaming the image (from a .gif or .bmp) to a different file format would result in anything useable - this would be dependant on the new file type having a similar structure to a .gif i guess.

Also - could the name repairshops be a clue to the solve?

A CALL TO PROGRAMMERS

From our discussion with Seth (still on going) we need soemone to find or code a program that can do the following automatically:

minimum
1) Take a bitmap
2) Look at each pixel
3) Gives us the ASCII value of the color of each said pixel

maximum (i eitdmake life simpler)
1) Take a bitmap
2) Look at every other pixel, skipping lines.
3) Gives us the ASCII value of the color of each said pizel

Our PM has iven us 7 frames of static to decode using a method liek this and we've determined it'd take 7000 years to do by hand

Ok I've got a fairly quick method to doing this. Well quicker than finding each pixel by hand anyway. It's complicated, so bear with me.

Get Programs
1. Download GifSplitter
2. Download a Hex Editor. I used XVI32
3. Download Colour Detector

Use Programs
1. Use GifSplitter to split repairshops.gif into the separate frames. (username/password = privateblog / k33p0ut)
2. Open the first frame in Paint. Zoom to 8x and scroll so you can see the upper left corner of the image.
3. Open Colour Detector. With Paint in front, capture the screen. Get the HEX values of the first few pixels - say 5 or 6. Copy them down, using the entire 6-digit value.
4. Open the frame in the hex editor. Search for the string of values from the first few pixels. Highlight characters and copy them into word.
5. Open Word. Hit Spacebar once. Paste the copied text into word. Record a Macro that deletes 7 characters (leading space, two digits, space, two digits, space) and then moves the cursor ahead two characters. Assign the macro to a shortcut key. Run that macro using the shortcut key until all that remains is one copy of each two digit set.
6. Copy the entire thing into a Hex-Ascii converter like this one.

That gives you one line of ASCII. There are 240 lines. Per frame. Have fun.

I know Xnbomb has got all the ascii text, but I started typing this before that happened and dammit I worked hard on this method so I'm posting it! Razz

Hi all, been lurking for a while just to catch up and am now ready to impart my findings.

...

There you go.

Oh, wait, there was something - in the final frame (using the technical method of 'squinting eyes a bit to make them go blurry') about half way down and a third across there looks to be either a word or set of numbers that look like:

backwards 'R' or 'K'
calculator '4'
'O' or 'D' poss backwards
'H'

At a push it could read 'HOUR' backwards...

Also, when placed in a vertical stack there does appear to be some continuation between the patterns from one frame to the next. Of course this could be just coincidence and morning eyes seeing what they want to see.

Anyways, thought I'd throw it in the mix as a less scientific approach.

Cheers,

Tood

These directions were hidden in the 6th frame:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In the nation's watering hole
Near the bird that flaps its wings
Between mess of frosted cylinders
And the bay of rocks, begin.

Start on foot and heading north
Keep the rugged waters right
And on the left the greens
And the cities' colored lights

Until you reach the icons three
Flapping in high winds
The local, national, heroes' pride
Is where your path will bend.

So head a little to the left
Towards hazel pillars three
The warrior's memorial
Is what you ought to see.

Around the pillars, on the ground
The names of those who've passed
Near to the triune majestics
Four brothers, Kuhlenbecks.

Once standing on the family stones
You ought to realize
That hazel giant number three
Blocks whitebird from your eyes.

The task is simple: you are there.
The journey is complete.
Walk backwards till you hit the brush
Tread slowly - watch your feet.

Method:

Code:

I noticed some letters in the 6th frame. (After using xnbombs decimal values and converting everything to ASCII. It began like this:

ثIn7 tضhاe ─n╩agtięo♣n|'┐s 6w┘a[t┌e&ri╙n┐gd ٌho▐l

At first I had to cross reference with a dictionary file while picking out viable ASCII range letters (if you look carefully at the above line you can make out the letters Inthenagtionswatering), but then I noticed a pattern in the first few words:

0 means skipped letter. 1 means take that letter, 2 means two letters in a row are used:

02020102010102010101020101010102.. etc..

Taking out the 0's to make it clearer:

2 2 1 2 1 1 2 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ..

So:

2 (zero 1's) 2 (one 1) 2 (two 1's) 2 (three 1's) 2 (four 1's) 2 (five 1's) etc.

[note that the sequence seems to be broken between (eight 1's) and (nine 1's) as they were swapped.. I'm not sure if it's a transcription error or a mistake in the puzzle, but it was annoying as hell and broke the rest of my program from that point until I figured out what's going on.]

The sequence continues all the way up to fourty 1's and then it gets broken there with gibberish.

I just glanced over the other sheets and didn't notice anything, but I haven't checked the same pattern yet. Also note that frames 1 and 7 are characteristically different than the middle 5 frames as they only use 3 specific letters from the ASCII range (t,d,l) if we use the above method, and all the numbers are divisible by 4. There also don't seem to be any line feeds/breaks which were very helpful in figuring out that there is a message in frame 6.

awesome job Ehsan!!!! Very Happy

Sounds like the starting point might be in Milwaukee at the Milwaukee Art Museum...

I've check some values in xnbomb's files for frames 1 and 7 and there are errors in them.

The message appears to continue in the last frame (or maybe an entirely separate message). Part of it goes:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Outback behind the Federation Square, Where triptych Pioneer's have rest and care The River of Mist has lost its way No bank

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I live in Melbourne, Australia, and i believe (or hope...) this message (not sure about the other directions posted by Ehsan, but maybe) relates to Melbourne.
Outback: synomous with Australia
"Federation Square": recently (couple of years ago) opened in Melbourne to commemorate the centenary of our federation. Federation Square sits oposite Melbourne's main metropolitan train station. It also sits next to the Yarra River, originally called by Australian Aborigines (before settlers arrived from England) "Birrarrung". Literally translated, Birrarrung means "River of Mist". Oh, and behind the square is a park and a path which can be followed all the way up the river, so i can definitely get 'behind the Federation Square'

I could be getting way over excited about going on a treasure hunt, but a man's gotta dream, doesn't he? Very Happy

I think each frame would relate to a different set of directions for a different location (Steven mentioned he hid the evidence in several locations on earth, so it would make sense that the seven images were relating to seven different places). I don't have the skills/patience to try and get the rest of the message, but if someone can get the whole clue, i will definitely go searching.

Hey great work again Ehsan! Cool

It would be nice if the seven frames referred to seven locations on seven continents!

Frame 6 clearly references the Milwaukee area in the US. (googling for Kuhlenbecks lists a pub i.e. 'watering hole' near milwaukee)

Frame 7 seems to be Australia (thanks camdman!)

I will have a go at transcribing the other 5 frames tonight if i can.
What a really _nice_ puzzle!!

If that really is describing the Milwauke Art Museum, I should be able to see about finding it tomorrow! Any locals want to come with me? Phaedra? Bwoch? Anybody else here?

It doesn't follow the same pattern as Ehsan's frame 6.

Because there appears to be many errors in xnbomb's frame 7 file, I re-did the hex/ascii values and the entire message in frame 7 goes:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Outback behind the Federation Square,
Where triptych Pioneer's have rest and care
The River of Mist has lost its way
No bank beneath the bridge holds sway
Close by the Elms of Flemming's Speaker's Mound
Listen for the Cauldron's sound
Stand beneath the cups offered to the sky
For this secret you must vie.

Following that it breaks down into gibberish so I stopped working on it further...

This does sounds like Birrarung Marr park. Triptych Pioneer's is refering to a painting in the national galery of Victoria. There is a Speakers mound in Speakers Corner of the park. Cups turned to the sky sounds like the Federation Bells (a load of bells turned upside down).

EDIT: I just thought of something stevie said to me in a previous email:

Wow.

Milwaukee finally gets its very own live ARG event! Very Happy (I love you, Orbital Colony PMs.)

And I...will be in Chicago tomorrow. *weeps* Oh, painful irony. Crying or Very sad

But yes, hopefully you, and Bwoch and maybe QBKooky can make it. Go, and REPRESENT, my city-brethren. Smile
