I notice that a couple of people have mentioned the Riemann connections within this card.....have we done any work on tying it up with the "Riemann" silver card at all?

Or have we discounted any possibility of a link between the two?

I was looking more closly at this card and noticed two things:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There seems to be more invisible ink on the blackboard

and

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
theres something written in the equation at the top of the note

not sure if they mean anything but we'll see

For completeness, I tried the digraph idea (see above) with some possible cribs and got some recognisable plaintext and keytext, but not enough for it to be more than coincidence.

Still hard to find much on the Great Cipher, even on French pages. But I now think this was a blind alley too: the cipher was based on numbering the most common 587 syllables. I doubt XY is the 600th most common English syllable (are there many xylophonists out there, though?).

A new thought, tying in with the equations mentioned above: could this be a Hill Cipher (see here)?

Hello all,

Im a Hebrew speaker so i will translate the few words in the text that make sense. I'm not sure will it help or not.

1st word (from the right) in line 2 is "and there is"

1st word in line 3 is "mountain"

1st word in line 4 is "so"

1st word in line 6 is "regulator" or "period"

1s word in line 7 is "asphalt", 2nd word is "bad" or "ill"

I tried to assamble some anagrams but nothing made much sense.

I think that the hill cipher is definitely the way to go as the XY=600 and the matrix algebra.

Also the nxn matrix needed has connections with the factors of 600 but that would mean lots and lots of matrices to check.

New here - has anyone done work on the book _" The Code Book:
The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography
by Simon Singh
Anchor Books, August 2000
ISBN: 0385495323

One reader says: "THE CODE BOOK is a beatuful overview of the history of cryptography. The book takes the reader from the simple ciphers of history (this is where Mary Queen of Scots comes in, but I thought that story was fairly far in the background), through the fairly radical improvements of the rennaisance, and truly shines in the discussion of the WWII Enigma machine and the truly amazing response of the English decoding aparatus. It appears that much material only recently became declassified, allowing Singh to discuss Enigma and the English code-breaking operation. Finally, Singh gets to the efforts to produce computer cryptography and the recent innovations that culminate in the "public key" encryption and the controversy over the PGP (pretty good privacy) program."

?

Not sure if this is just a result of an internet search red herring or a new lead cos you lot seem to be going to the far end of a Fart on numbers and not getting anywhere.

I only discovered the "CITY" on the day of kings or 3 days following the Saturnalia

Sorry to seem a little intoxicated but Hebrew+Mountian+Christmas = 10 commandments. If I am wrong - hey I am sorry. If I am right - hey get a life, loosen up and have a glass of wine, it worked for me. HIC!
Normal sevice will be resumed in the morning.

One more thought, about the twice as hard part, maybe we are looking for a cipher that has a keyspace which is twice as much as another.

EDIT:

another thought, what about this cipher. References to matices, digraphs and the number 2 quite alot as 2 matrices are used (twice as hard). It is like playfair but you need a key. Also you may have to turn your numbers into digraphs.

Is this relevant:

i was thinking if we could get someone to translate the text into letters then use fretty idea of two-way ciphers it might lead to the awnser

just an idea

Ciphers of History

Hi all,
New poster here. Bought a set of cards for my daughter for Christmas, and now hooked myself!
I realise that you guys have been at this for much longer than me, but it occurs to me that the shadowy text is in fact a vague image of the page expanded and turned through 90° clockwise (the 3 shadow letters to the right of the first letters on the bottom 3 lines are the same as the last 3 letters on the penultimate line - you can also just see the image of the last letter of line 5 and so on - had a play around in Photoshop once i spotted this and it is an absolute match). Aplogies if this has alreday been covered by someone else, but i couldn't spot a reference in earlier posts.
Having said all that, what it means defeats me at present. Something to do with reading from bottom to top perhaps?

Welcome on board!

What you noticed hasn't been spotted before, great work! It must have taken enough effort to actually mean something, but I too am at a loss to suggest what.

I'm sure this new revelation will have people's brains racing over the next weekend. Here's hoping one of us nails a solve!

I'm taking a look at this one now, mainly as there doesn't seem to be as many working on it as the other silvers.

I currently think this is tied in with the Atbash cipher, which seems a strong answer based on the hebrew, and on the History in the title. This is a "simple" substitution cipher, although Von's clue says it will be twice as hard...

I think I've identified the hebrew characters, although it's hard as a few are quite similar, but see below. If any hebrew readers want to check it?

I'll do the substitution next, but depending what comes up, who knows the steps after that...
