VoIP

Anyone else here ditched the old ground line yet? Just did with mine, couldn't be happier so far. My moment of truth came when I realized I was essentially paying $50/month to Verizon for the privilege of receiving one telemarketing call after another, most of which were for a previous tenant.

So, keeping my Verizon wireless the way it is, I'm now with Skype, which is $38/year -- that's right, a year. Soon, I'll have to get either a better headset or one of these, but it's a fair trade, I think.

Tradeoffs -- no 911 service, and if the power goes out, so does the phone, of course. No problem as long as the cell is still working. Reception isn't that great, but I think that will improve once I get the VoIP phone.

In case anyone had my old 212 number as their primary means of getting in touch with me, PM me for the new # and for my cell.

Yes! We signed up with vonage a few months ago and we couldn't be happier. We both had cell phones and didn't really need a home phone at all, but with the offspring we felt a little naked without something we could consider a home number for 911 services.

We pay something like $16 a month to Vonage rather than the $70-100 we were spending a month to Verizon. As an added bonus, we got to pick a phone number from any area code we wanted so we picked one in my mom's area so that she no longer has to call us long distance.

It does have it's drawbacks since we lose phone service when we lost internet ( /me shakes her fist at Comcast... ) but overall the savings each month was worth the small inconvenience. Now if only there was a cheap alternative in my town to using Comcast.

So, just scrolling up and looking at my original post there, it kind of hit me that I have AOL, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ instant message accounts. I also have Skype and Google Talk. I use a Logitech webcam with AOL, Yahoo, and Skype. I use Skype as my primary 'land' line through VoIP, and I also have an i2eye videophone. I must have 20 different email accounts, and I actually use 4 of them. I also have a Blackberry, which I use for cell phone, SMS, and email services, and is also rigged to connect to the internet and as a mobile instant messager.

Basically, should I be afraid of robots from the future?

We've had Vonage for over a year now, and haven't missed paying Sprint 60 bucks a month for telemarketer courtesy.

I discovered how spotty my interenet (Cox Cable) service is, though, as once in a while I'll have a call dropped. But not Vonage's fault. Great service, though. It's totally transparent (reaquirement from the spouse) and all the phones in the house hook into it. We have unlimited local/long distance (if there is still such a thing) for $24.99/mo.

People of Earth! I suggest open revolt against your local phone companies! Ditch the landlines. You know you want to!

I can't let go of the security of the one guaranteed-to-be-working landline. And for those who think "hey I've got my cell..." Those who lived in Louisiana post Katrina and lived in my area post Hurricane Isabel can testify to what happens when the emergency batteries on the cell towers expire the day after the storm.

Darling, for a non-geek musician you are so hooked up that you should be afraid of robots from now.

Robots from the future, Pinkertons from the past, and atomic ninjas from now. That's what you gotta watch out for. Everything else in life is gravy.

Went to Vonage a year ago. Me happy. Swtiched because I was getting soime MASSIVE line noise on my landline. It messed me up BIGTIME during my pm stint in Tranquil Valley, so some things got lost, thanks to that. Phone company wanted over a grand to check the line since it is underground and they would have to dig up 400 feet of line from the road to my house to find.

Cable also undergrounds. Works like a champ. Connected w/high speed. Cost is about the same. Phone service, 65 a month, cable, hi speed and vonage, bout 75 a month.

And yup, when internet goes, so does the phone, same with power. that is the only thing that sucks.

Otherwise, me happy with Vonage.
