I've tried using the number as a possible prime. In the text of the card there's one possible question:
Quote:
'...check whether a number really is a prime..'

So, given that all the other numbers are obvious primes, I tried 7235733 (which factors to 3*163*14797). So I tried as my 'proof' (which it asks for in the solution box:

- It is divisible by 3,
- 7235733 is not a prime,
- 3*163*14797 = 7235733

None of which worked sadly.. Sad

For all those struggling with the concept of the card, BBC Radio Four's series In Our Time dealt this week with primes and the Zeta function. Here is the link to the program website.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/history/inourtime

It is now also available as a podcast - it's a great show! For those too impatient to listen to the whole thing, the discussion of Zeta functions comes after around 25 minutes.

I found it quite helpful, even if I would rather have had one of the other guests describe the maths behind the function rather than the one who keeps saying 'generally', ho hum.

After reading through this thread i have to say that i am going with the idea that you need to proof read the card and enter it correctly.

some of the clues also fit. The G. F. G. being wrong and also Von's clue having uppercase letters changed to lower case so that the link doesn't quite work. Maybe also the colours in the top of the card being wrong.

A few other things i have noticed on the card that could also be errors are that the word Zeta appears 3 times, twice with a large Z and once with a small z.

Also, if i understand the meaning of the whole Riemann Zeta Function, the last sentence in the third paragraph is wrong. The last part 'but it would also imply that there is a certain order to primes.' shouldn't it be 'but it would also imply that there is NOT a certain order to primes.'?

Last of all the equation on the card seems to be wrong. The colon before the equals sign shouldn't be there. I think this was mentioned before in this thread but was dismissed because there is no way to type in the equation correctly. Well maybe these web sites will help with that problem.

I managed to convert the correct equation to the MathML langauage. But your browser need the plugin to be able to display it properly.

No idea if any of this helps.

Feel free to tell me i'm completely wrong because i wouldn't be too suprised. This card is frying my brain.[/list]

This is going to sound very simple compared to everyone elses brain storming, but could it be that we need to count all of the mistakes on the card and enter that number which i bet will probably be a prime???

It's a good idea, however the box asks What is your proof? and is quite large - see previous posts on it. Of course this could be just to mislead us! Having said that I can't think of any cards that have had deliberate misinformation on them...

Thats a good point, i had forgotten that it says "Whats your proof" i guess its back to the drawing board!

I havent tried it yet to see if it works, has anyone tried counting the mistakes yet that can tell us how many there are?

Well i'm locked out of the card for 24 hours.

Have we yet confirmed that the dot in the upper right hand corner on the silver part is on all the cards? To me it looks like a planet transiting the sun or a moon around a planet with rings such as saturn. Just thowing that in the mix.

Hey
I have two versions of this card, one with a line down the middle and no black dot, and one wiith no line, yet it has a little dot.
I dont think this is how to solve it, but I think that the best suggestion so far has come from Arramond. If the card entry screen says give us your proof, it could mean something about proof-reading the card. Question

Strange, my card has a line and a dot. Must be print errors.

Tried just entering
4 mistakes
5 mistakes
6 mistakes
Surprise surprise NO
Clutching at straws with this one
Its a big solve box so maybe we need to enter the actual mistakes on the card.
But how to format those I have no idea
