[UPDATE] Perplex City Sentinel 16th January 2006

Stevewh Makes Stunning Debut
By KATE BREWSTER

Stevewh has leapt to the top of the weekly leaderboard with a stunning 5091 points off 117 solves, despite having only joined last week. PCAG statistician Samara Jones commented, "It can't be much longer until he joins the 34 players in first place. He only need 10 more cards to make it." In the last week alone, the players have solved 13,617 cards to accrue over 300,000 points, bringing the total cards solved to 144,459 and the Perplex Points total to 3,884,047.

In light of the large number of players in first place, it's important to recognise the players who haven't quite made it yet. Dvmrph and ka' both just need to solve card #244, Syzygy Cube, to make it from 35th to first place, while donstobbart just has to solve card #241, T-L-P.

The players are continuing to look for help with the notoriously difficult cards #180, ARG!; #238 Riemann; #242, Ciphers of History; #243, Shuffled; and #251, The Thirteenth Labour -- but so far with no success. Asked if he could give out any hints, Von Lubik, member of the Academy's Cube Retrieval Team, would only offer: "There's no need to rush to solve them. They should be admiring the beauty of the puzzles, not looking for fast and easy answers. We've no intention of giving out any extra hints -- other than our hint line -- at this time."

The number of incorrect solves remains at over half the number of correct solves for the last week, month and total. Caine Johansson, also a member of the Cube Retrieval Team at the Academy, commented, "We're obviously disappointed that so many people are getting the wrong answers, but we're also aware that some of the cards have alternative answers that we don't always think of before release. ... We're working hard to keep the solution database up to date and taking extra care with the future waves of cards to eliminate this problem as much as possible."

The leaderboard continues to be dominated by men and the U.K., but Academy sociologist Marta Lowe remains firm in her belief that we'll see a large shift in both. "As it becomes easier to get the cards anywhere in the world, we'll definitely see the U.S. and the rest of Europe appearing more at the top. As to to the gender imbalance correcting itself, it can't be long off. After all, we've already got 2 women at the very top of the board."

Cahill Captures Crown in Surprise Victory
By CORWIN JONES

Ryan Cahill became the PCAG champion for 269 on Saturday night with his upset victory over top competitor Serena Duncan in the final minutes of play. Cahill trailed Duncan throughout the match, but in the closing forty minutes showed a tremendous resurgence and recaptured all of the lost ground, eventually taking a narrow lead.

Cahill is, naturally, pleased with his victory. "I feel like a shadow has been lifted from me," he said in post-match interviews. "I feel like I could do anything."

Cahill's first PCAG championship was spoilt when the Receda Cube was stolen during the Academy Ball. Cahill has said that he felt the terrible incident had set a bad tone for his championship year, and so he feels as though this is his first actual championship win. He has expressed great relief that last night's Academy Ball celebrating his win was uneventful. Cahill has also suggested, perhaps a bit optimistically, that the Receda Cube might be recovered during his current reign as champion. "It would be appropriate, wouldn't it?" he said.

Duncan, who was the 268 champion and had been defending her title, was shockingly candid about her displeasure in losing the finals match to Cahill. "We all know that I am a stronger competitor," she said. "What happened [on Saturday] is purely a matter of luck. There's no way in a fair and level match that Ryan should have beaten me. He simply isn't that good."

Duncan refused to answer questions about whether she would seek an investigation into the results of the match, provoking speculation that she plans to do just that. PCAG insiders, however, have pointed out that the Clash cards for the final are drawn up months ahead of time and placed into heavy encryption during the championship season. The cards are assigned randomly during actual play. The potential for cheating is significantly reduced by these measures, PCAG officials say.

Futures
By Madame Bianca, for the week of January 16

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Your sense of the profound spins crooked this week, so every mundane piece of advice seems like a gem of infinite wisdom to you. In this kind of circumstance, your best bet might be to avoid talking to others. Turn the key off, babe.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Your love for your own cookery doesn't mean you have quality skills, and your guests on Thursday just might find this out the hard way. Might I suggest ordering in instead? Trust me, everyone will be better off.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Your new resolve to take more exercise hits a wall when you strain your ulnar collateral ligament. Well, when you don't really want to do something in the first place, any little excuse will do, won't it?

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Hard times ahead, muffin. Stock up on special treats for your pantry; you'll be relying an awful lot on comfort foods for the next few days. I'm not saying you'll be justified, but one does need to be pragmatic.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
The opportunity of a lifetime knocks on your door early Tuesday morning. Trouble is it might be a little hard to recognise. Madame's advice: don't refuse anything Tuesday morning, no matter how strange or unpleasant, so you don't accidentally turn down the big one.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
This week brings fatigue for you. Bone-ossifying, muscle-sapping exhaustion. Coffee and Ceretin will only get you so far, doll, so maybe you should clear your schedule of anything you might have planned where you don't want to seem dumb as a post.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
An overinflated sense of etiquette prevents you from making necessary (if bold) strides toward your own heart's desire. You know, pumpkin, sometimes people don't mind if you just get right to the point.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
This is the week that the winter chill finally gets the best of you. Layer, sweetheart, and talk your way out of any outdoor sports. Your delicate constitution simply can't tolerate the weather.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
According to the stars, this week you will be biting your own tongue a lot. Can't explain it, but there you have it. Might be best to stick to brothy soups and other non-chew-requiring modes of sustenance.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
That bank error in your favour of last month comes back to haunt you this week, when the bank finally corrects itself and puts you back in the hole. It's not likely, but maybe if you move fast, you can fix it before you incur penalties.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
Try as you might, Thursday through Saturday, nobody will have any idea what you're talking about. It's not that you're a raving lunatic so much as that the stars have it in for you in the communication department. It'll pass by Sunday, though by then it'll be to late for you.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
Knowledge is to understand -- to understand who you are. If you know not who you are, what's the use of learning?

And remember, a dog does not play at pyramid.

Librarian Found Dead

Academy Head Librarian Isaac Cymbalisty was found dead in his home midday on Saturday in what appears to be a case of suicide. Sources familiar with the man described him as "isolated," and "a bit of a loner." He does not leave behind any immediate family. Cymbalisty was 52 years of age.

Ahem. Do you think that they have compulsory drug testing at the PCAG finals? Specifically for...ooh, lets see...Ceretin?

Surely that is the main news here.

I post 'em as I see 'em. The quotes are taken in whatever order they come in - banner headline first, sub stories/pages like Futures and Letters (with links to more information) next, and then sub headlines, where we don't get access to anything more than the first few lines - finally the "one-liners".

Of course, for our own purposes, the tragic death of Cymbalisty catches our attention, but that's our decision, not the publishers at the Sentinel.

...and don't call me Shirley.

Cahill Captures Crown in Surprise Victory
By CORWIN JONES

Tha above story, the interview on the Setinal with Dale Robarding and the death of Isaac Cymbalisty all somehow seem to be linked with the use of Ceretin. Some more obviously and directly than others and some more speculativly.

Cahill could possibly have used Ceretin to aid him in his success.

Cymbalisty could have overused it to an extent which has led to his death.

Robarding is keen to point out the safety of the drug and also that it could be used in future in competition

[quote]Well, of course as a player I vigilantly followed the guidelines for drug use laid out by the games authorities, but I've always felt that their drug policies are draconian," Robarding says. "[PCAG Chairman Robert] Zhi-Hui would have you think that there is no social benefit to drugs like, say, Ceretin. But side effects aside, I think we might live in a better world if we could all push ourselves to continually operate at a higher level.
Quote:

If we could find out more we could use it to have leverage over Cahill and robarding which may prove useful in the future......???????

[wild unfocussed spec] I think this all adds up to a big conspiracy. The Academy are seeking to redress the fact that poor Ryan was overshadowed last time he won, they fiddle the Clash cards and Ryan wins!

I wonder if he'll be right and the cube is returned in the next year? [/wild unfocussed spec]

Is there any coincidence in the fact that Cymbalisty was working on the Grainer Diary before he died?

Also for anyone who read Violet's Blog regarding the diary entries she mentions that Cymbalisty is reasonable if he gets his Ceritin.

Quote:
We're about halfway through these entries now - talking to Cymbalisty, he says there are only another three pages to go. Can't say I'm sorry we won't be having to work on this together too much longer; not only is he kind of slimey, but he's also impossible to work with unless he's had his Ceretin. He ran out last night, so we got no work done at all - it looked like he was half asleep, so I decided to call it a night after half an hour. But apparently he managed to replenish his supply today, and here is the fruit of our work:

I am just wondering if Third Power are also responsible for this death, as with others who might be getting close. I'm thinking that it possible that they got t who ever supplies his Ceritin.

Not sure whether to post this here or in response to the thread about Violet's blog, but the article about Cymbalisty's death is a stub with a 'sign in with your key to view more', right?

What about emailing Violet (or someone else!) and asking for the full text of the article?
