Taking Dio's advice for now. We'll see what happens.

Ok, between "You're missing the forest for the trees" and Murdered talking about looking for double meanings, I think it's clear we're looking too much at the details. What we do now is another question. Sad

New guess...

Perhaps the picket fence line refers to a simple picket fence cipher for two reasons. First, it is a statement, not a question. Second, the remark that we are missing the forest for the trees makes me think we are looking for hidden meanings when it's in plain view.

[theory] Picket fence the cipher text then vingere each line individually with the answers to the two questions as the keys.[/theory]

I'd do it myself but I don't have access to the usual tools from here and I don't have time to do it manually.

Is this game still running? I love the writing thus far, and I need a new one to play.

It is indeed still running, but we've been stopped by the cypher. Give it a try, perhaps you stand a better chance. Smile

Just caught up with this, and it's got me intrigued...

So for what it's worth, the 2 lines I get for a picket fence are:

oohhenhionttguparisl

etyketurohstyetwhaoe

I'm guessing that the paris in the first line is a coincidence... Twisted Evil

tried ROT-ing - nothing, obviously in the case of the first line. Vigenere also gives nothing with mercury, stalingrad and iwojima (both popped up at the top of a quick Google for bloodiest battle).

Other useless information that turned up during the last hour or so - Black Picket Fence was a film, there are many films about bloody battles (no kidding Rolling Eyes ), and there are a fair number of films with Mercury in the title. Obviously I didn't go off on any kind of film-related wild goose chase at any point Wink

Is it possible that all three answers are keys?

OMG - I got it Very Happy

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Enciphered using a redfence cipher, with the key mercury (so everyone who thought red for the picket fence was right Wink): "I know you're here to help. It's not that easy though."

So where do we go from here?

And not long after I posted the above, and got an AIM account set up:

(00:01:53) MurderedGenius: Having fun?
(00:02:00) geeky16uk: oh yes
(00:02:00) MurderedGenius logged in.
(00:02:14) MurderedGenius: Joy. I wouldn't want my delightful little puppets to become upset.
(00:02:23) geeky16uk: I never get upset
(00:02:30) geeky16uk: just frustrated sometimes
(00:02:33) MurderedGenius: Oh, wonderful! That makes it so much easier!
(00:02:43) geeky16uk: you like it easy?
(00:02:47) MurderedGenius: Your friends are lax in their work. You, I see, know what to do.
(00:02:52) geeky16uk: that doesn't sound like what I've heard
(00:02:5Cool geeky16uk: thankyou
(00:03:09) MurderedGenius: Oh? What have you heard about me?
(00:03:13) MurderedGenius: Surely not much.
(00:03:19) geeky16uk: some, but not enough
(00:03:30) geeky16uk: I am - curious
(00:03:44) MurderedGenius: Ask away then.
(00:04:13) geeky16uk: now there's an open ended offer
(00:04:19) MurderedGenius: Isn't it?
(00:04:29) MurderedGenius: I'm serious though. I'll do my best to answer any question.
(00:04:56) geeky16uk: fair enough, but I am only recently involved
(00:05:03) geeky16uk: can I ask about your brother?
(00:05:09) MurderedGenius: Of course.
(00:05:30) geeky16uk: why take it out on him? I know little of the... history behind this
(00:05:55) MurderedGenius: I'm not taking anything out on him. If I am, it's justified.
(00:06:01) geeky16uk: why?
(00:06:09) MurderedGenius: He stole my birthright.
(00:06:19) geeky16uk: what is your birthright?
(00:06:27) MurderedGenius: Imagine a scenario.
(00:06:32) geeky16uk: go ahead...
(00:07:2Cool MurderedGenius: Since you were born, your purpose was to become something great. Your purpose was to become a highly specialized tool. Before you were born, they altered you, changed you, to make you better.
(00:07:40) MurderedGenius: Then, when the time comes, they pick your inferior older brother.
(00:08:05) geeky16uk: how do you know that you were the chosen - that your brother was inferior?
(00:08:17) geeky16uk: (I believe in challenging assumptions)
(00:08:23) MurderedGenius: I was the one with altered genetics. He's whole. Human.
(00:08:30) MurderedGenius: I'm nothing more than a wasted experiment.
(00:08:56) geeky16uk: how do you KNOW this though? - I play devil's advocate here, you understand
(00:09:04) MurderedGenius: Of course.
(00:09:36) MurderedGenius: I've run the DNA tests. His genes match his parents. Mine have traces of something else. Some things are missing, others things are there that shouldn't.
(00:09:43) geeky16uk: OK, understood
(00:09:56) geeky16uk: I will take your for this - for what your word is worth
(00:10:30) geeky16uk: a missing word there, my apologies
(00:10:39) MurderedGenius: A foolish decision, but a healthy one.
(00:11:01) MurderedGenius: You obviously do not share the same opinions as your "associates".
(00:11:06) geeky16uk: note, for what your word is worth - I take what you say at face value, no more
(00:11:1Cool geeky16uk: I will listen, and digest
(00:11:29) geeky16uk: I will not necessarily believe
(00:11:45) geeky16uk: do we understand one another?
(00:12:10) MurderedGenius: Yes, yes of course.
(00:12:13) geeky16uk: good
(00:12:26) geeky16uk: I must go, I will speak to you again

I thought I'd take a different tack - let's see where this goes Wink

I saw MG online, so I jumped at the chance to banter with him:

Alex wrote:

CanemExMachina: I've been hearing a lot about you.
MurderedGenius: Have you now?
CanemExMachina: Oh yes! You seem like a terribly interesting person -- manipulative, but isn't that just the spice of life?
MurderedGenius: Quite so. Tell me, where did you get this screename from?
CanemExMachina: I've been trying to give some friends a hand.
MurderedGenius: Ah. You are one of them.
CanemExMachina: So to speak, so to speak.
CanemExMachina: Are you one of a 'them', or are you the lone wolf you sound like?
MurderedGenius: Lone wolf? Hardly how I would describe myself.
CanemExMachina: Understandable. Rare's the man who would. So what do you prefer? Coyote? Jackal?
MurderedGenius: A hawk.
MurderedGenius: Take it for what you will.
CanemExMachina: A noble creature, the hawk. Keen eyes, keener will. A good way to think of oneself. But are you wild or are you tethered?
MurderedGenius: I am wild when it is more beneficial, and tethered when it is more beneficial.
CanemExMachina: Oh, so! An opportunist. And what kind of opportunity are my friends infringing upon, that you've been so, shall we say, antagonistic?
MurderedGenius: I do not appreciate the recent interference. People take notice of many things.
CanemExMachina: One imagines that that is what people do, noticing the wrong things. Did we invade your playground?
MurderedGenius: Not mine. I don't mind much if you try to stop me.
CanemExMachina: I admit I find that odd, just like the way you've been so oblique about warning us off. Almost like you don't care much at all.
MurderedGenius: It would be a good tactic if I wanted to confuse you.
CanemExMachina: It certainly would. And you already know firsthand how nosy we are.
MurderedGenius: Indeed.
CanemExMachina: Despite the lethal nature of curiosity, I confess it is my one true vice. And what I am curious to know, right now, is if you have ever considered using nosy people to your advantage.
MurderedGenius: Of course. There are things you might find out that I can't.
CanemExMachina: Of course. And of course, if we decide that you are acting against us, we will be understandably unwilling to share our information with you.
MurderedGenius: It isn't that hard to weasel information out of people who think it's all a game.
CanemExMachina: I wouldn't be so sure. You have to give us some credit: we are smart.
MurderedGenius: You are an intelligent bunch.
MurderedGenius: Unfortunately, it's in the wrong places.
CanemExMachina: So then maybe you should be a little more forward.
CanemExMachina: Do you want something from us?
MurderedGenius: Not yet.
CanemExMachina: Like we're going to sit on our hands until you come knocking.
MurderedGenius: Of course.
CanemExMachina: A hivemind is a precious resource. Information is our currency. You might consider what a useful tool that might prove to be.
MurderedGenius: Now, are you trying to make me a good guy?
MurderedGenius: Tsk. Tsk.
MurderedGenius signed off at 6:33:18 PM.

He signed off before I could retort, the jerk. Now if only I could learn to be direct instead of overly metaphorical.

Additionally, holy crap, he's only 15? Wow, okay. We should keep a note of this in case we ever have to make him angry.

Just sent this to John P:

Quote:
Just as you said to a friend of mine. But this time, look to New Horizons.

A friend.

The code says:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"We know it won't be easy, but you are in danger. Allow us to assist you, tell us what we can do. I assume plaintext communication is unsafe?" - same cipher, pluto as the key.

Edit - just got the reply:
Quote:
The coded messages was a test.

I appreciate your help. What do you need to know?

The link gives us the attached image. The cipher was simply a test, presumably to make sure we were able to help, so at least we don't have to worry about ciphering every email to John Wink

Just a thought, but the message from this seems to be similar to the tone of many of our IM conversations - we're being prodded to ask questions. So are we looking for the "right" questions? I confess, I have no idea what the right question(s) might be.

Last of all, can anyone ID the area and route in the pic? *Flynn mumbles something about Google Earth for Linux....
