01/25/06 - News on the book front

E-Mail from Ellen wrote:
Thanks for your patience - very sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Our initial publication plan on Earth has gone a bit off-course. Our current plan now is to offer books through Lulu, a print-on-demand service. We will of course be providing complimentary printed copies to all of the authors who have worked with us on this project.

In talking with Mind Candy, we are undecided on what to do about wider distribution on Earth. We may offer the book with no royalty fee, so readers would pay only production costs; or we may set a small royalty fee and donate the proceeds to a worthy charity. Mind Candy of course should not be permitted to profit from your work. If you have an opinion on this as well, we would be interested in hearing it.

We believe that a paperback perfect-bound book in the 6"x9" format would fit your needs best, but please tell us if your group disagrees.

If you would provide us with a PDF file in that format, we would very much appreciate it. Here is information on Lulu's requirements:
http://www.lulu.com/help/node/view/208

As you have also been interested in providing cover art, you will also need their requirements for covers:
http://www.lulu.com/help/node/view/1726

As for the Perplex City edition, we are planning to release the book within the next two to three weeks. We'll let you know how it goes.

All my best,
Ellen

It's progress at least. I'll be converting the format over and sending it off to them today.

Does this forum or Unfiction need anymore funding?? I've seen many sites like this asking for money to help host it. Since everybody who helped contribute to the book was from here, then I guess its a good place for the money to go back.

Unless we stuff royalties and just pay for production.

Forg

Unfiction seems an appropriate place for the cash to go.

I like the idea of the cash going to Unfiction as well. Seems appropriate and a nice way for us to sorta give back to them.

Another vote for Unfiction...

Maybe we should request that the PXC royalties go somewhere? A hospital or something. Might improve their opinion of Earthlings a bit Smile (especially after reading my scrawlings)

If not Unfiction, these chaps could do with a hand.

My vote would be for Unfiction at the moment.. maybe we should have a few suggestions and then put it to a poll? Although I can't see the book raising a lot Wink

You sure about that Reason?

If half of them buy the book, and the royalty is only $1, that's still nearly $7000.

Is it really that many!?

I can't see the book shifting that many copies, but perhaps we should split it between Unfiction and a charity?

It's worth noting that we'll never agree on a charity though.

I would be all for Unfiction getting the money. As for the charity, I agree with Duckie. We won't ever agree on one, so maybe we can agree on two or 3?

To be honest I am not sure what the actual demand would be for the book beyond those of us that wrote it or put it together. (All the the content is available on the Wiki and if Seaside are looking at a web based version the this would also dilute the demand.)

Perhaps we should have a show of hands as to how many people would be willing to pay a nominal fee for the book?

Well, I don't think I can be the only person around who had nowt to do with the thing, but would want a copy. Or has everyone else got their random-stuff-hoarding impulses under control?
