[VIRAL MARKETING/ARG?] Pherotones

It turns out that an ad that almost made me lose my tiny remaining sliver of faith in humanity might be something considerably more. The lead scientist has a blog, and was apparently interviewed on the O'Reilly network.

There's an OOG article about it, and as mentioned, there was apparently a Wikipedia article about it, but I can't find it, so it may have been deleted.

The article credits McKinney-Silver, the ad agency behind Art of the H3ist, as the people behind the game, but it doesn't get into whether the other people behind AotH, like GMD, are involved.

LOL!

It's a viral marketing campaign created by the advertising agency McKinney Silver. The website is registered to them.

Shockingly they have even created a false wikipedia article about "pherotones." But didn't realize that their IP address (a Mckinney Silver one) is logged when they revised it.

Its a marketing hoax, not an arg. Eventually they're gonna sell these things for sure.

It's a ringtone. Why would I want a member of the opposite sex to notice me at the exact moment when I can't talk to her, because I have to take a call?

Oh! And this gem in the Google cache:

Wikipedia Pherotones article in Google cache

Is it worth saving a snapshot of that page somewhere?

You know how to find Ms. Vanderspoon's blog. Here's the link to her PhotoBucket gallery:

pherotonesphd

Most of the pictures are used on her blog or on the Pherotones web site, but where do the 'myfarm' and 'organhands' pictures fit?

Since it lists:
Quote:
There have also been reports of a technology called "Brown note", which allegedly cause those who hear it to lose control of their bowels

Which is a popular urban legend. Save the page only if you think the viral marketing campaign is going somewhere.

It is my personal opinion, that there is more to this than just a viral ad. Cuz if it was an ad, we'd see what it's for by now. (And it's obviously not Pherotones, cuz if it was, you would be able to drop your money on it.)

So, the question is, what IS this a campaign for?

I think someone more skilled SHOULD cache this wikipedia article, just in case we need it down the road.

Is it an ARG? I dunno.

But it's definitely not advertising that's overt, so it's worth keeping on the radar, by ARGonauts, IMHO.

Ok, I've submitted a testimonial. (Quite funny, if you ask me. Smile)

We'll see what happens.
