Rosie, I don't think your concerns are out of place at all. I think there are some mitigating circumstances in the particular situation of ARGs though.

1) The mission of ARGs in most cases is to blur the line between fantasy and reality.
2) Without gratis player help, ARGs would be fiction rather than interactive fiction.

You have made some very valid points. There are other situations I've seen where active and helpful participants have been offered a moderator position in return for some sort of compensation, so it's not anything abnormal. On the other hand, I've also seen people volunteer to spend countless volunteer hours helping out with something they like.

In the context of the game, without breaking the curtain or breaking the reality that the game has created, there's really no way for "Tucker" to offer anything other than maybe some swag, since his persona is a broke 20-something.

So what could they do? They could hire a non-player specifically to watch the boards, I guess. They might not have the padding in the budget to handle that. One of the current PMs could look after it, but I'm sure they've got other stuff to do.

As for a solution that pleases everyone, I'm stumped. Smile

heh - I trust Rowan completely. I had two points - they can pay her, so why not,.. and new players will be confused and the issue will distract from the game.

I understand your point about me basically being used as slave labor, but the point is, if I was being paid, I do not believe that I would be able to continue playing this game here as technically I would be a paid employee of GMD and thus there would be a conflict of interest.

I accepted this with no promise of reward and no expectations to get one (although it doesn't mean I'm not holding out hope for that penguin).

Waited a bit for this to die down a bit before barely poking my neck out here in Meta. This was a topic of conversation internally, and both of the above positions were argued out (along with the "we don't want players to feel like they have to give up playing" issue.) Hopefully Rose's issues will be resolve naturally or avoided entirely over the course of play.

To respond conceptually, though: this wasn't a decision that was made based upon budget or upon available manpower. It was a production choice that we hope will emphasize a feeling of community ownership of the "community" even inside of a "IC forum". I appreciate all opinions expressed in thread -- classicly good META questions.

Back behind the curtain with me on this issue (having revealed nothing game related.)

Your's cautiously (in META),

Brian
