They should come up with a Best Use of Silence award.

In unrelated news, gah, it says something about the quality of movie scores this year that I can't even come up with mental candidates for "best score."

Gasp! This is one of the few years where a movie score caught my attention. Not since The Rock have I cared enough to buy a CD of a soundtrack. Batman Begins' soundtrack is exceptional in every conceivable way. Track 11: Corynorhinus (all the tracks are the names of bats) could be said to score my soul. It literally makes me weep when I listen to it with full concentration.

Yes, both soundtracks are Hans Zimmer collaborations.

Seems like the score for Memoirs of a Geisha was nominated for a Golden Globe, but honestly, the movie was so interminably long and gratuitous that I couldn't sit still long enough to notice.

If only Serenity's soundtrack were on a par with Firefly's, I'd recommend it. As it is, only now after a number of viewings have I managed to stop wishing I could strip bits of it and replace them with bits from the series.

Yep, Tien Le, Batman Begins is a great, great score. It was tops for me until I heard Narnia.

I don't think it's been a bad year for scores, actually. It can be said that if you don't notice the score of a film, then it's a really good score that fulfills its role (not that I agree with that, personally). Standouts this year for me would include: War of the Worlds, The Island, King Kong, Legend of Zorro, Crash (although more of a soundscape than score) and maybe Memoirs of a Geisha.

I didn't notice the score of Serenity for the first three times I watched it cuz I was so intent on the movie. It is not a good score. All the action sequences grate on my nerves if I listen to them. There are good bits, mostly at the end.

I think a great score needs to be a character in the movie--make the viewers more a part of what they're experiencing. Truly great scores make you want to see the movie again, just to hear the music and be a part of that experience. Clearly I have high expectations, but when they're met, they're met brilliantly.

I would like to toss my hat in this discussion;

Best Film(s):

King Kong - Do I think Peter Jackson has lost a step since LOTR, yes, however I chalk that up to the cast more so than to him. I think what he is able to accomplish in visual wonderment needs to be toned down just a bit to let the characters wow the audience instead. I was telling my wife (who has never seen any version of this film) that it is kind of a love story between the girl and the beast. To which she replied, "That's creepy". On leaving the theater she said that now she understands the love story I was trying to explain. And that is the main reason why I give KK best film.

Cinderella Man - As a person, I strongly dislike Russel Crowe, which leaves me at a loss for words as to how I can like him so much in every film I see him in. Watching him beg from his former employers was a powerful scene that I won't soon forget. This movie also gets my award for most overlooked of 05.

Best Albums:
Extrordinary Machines, Fiona Apple
Wikkid Lil Girlz - Esthero
Try! - John Mayer Trio
Careless Love - Madeleine Peyroux

Best TV Show:
The Office

Worst TV Show:
Dancing With the Stars

Worster TV Show:
Dancing With the Stars, The Rematch

I concur on the Narnia soundtrack -- I liked all of it, but the new song from Imogen Heap was enough to make me go looking for it at the ITunes store. Where it can only be purchased with the entire album...

I also second (third? fifth?) on Battlestar Galactica - one of the few shows I try to make a point to catch. The marathon of old eps last week was great.

I find most movies disappointing and therefore rarely see one in theaters any more. Really great films are few and far between, and I get irritated at spending all that money on a mediocre experience, so I go less and less. End result - no basis for comparison when seeking year's best. So I'll shut up.

I liked it if only because the gray hair fellow looked like he was having so much fun! The rest of them were trying too to be "good." and forgot about stage presence.

Insert collective gawd-I'm-getting-old-groan from all of us who know who George Hamilton is. Gotta love his sense of humor about falling off a yacht.

I'm rooting for Drew Lachey and Tatum.

Ladies. Gentlemen.

The Constant Gardener

Discuss.

I for one loved it. It was not only very well done directorially, (is that a word?), the cinematography was excellent.

It didn't hurt that it had "A Beginner's Guide To ARGs" tossed in there, too. Now, if they'd only stegged the damn images...
