As the box asks "What is your proof" I tried "I think therefore I am" wasn't it though.

OK the next million paragraphs or so could be total rubbish:

The Fermat reference (with the margin) was bugging me so I decided to look in the book Fermats Last Theorem by Simon Singh. I came across a part about G.H.Hardy and it said that whenever he went on a voyage he would send a false telegram to a friend saying:

HAVE SOLVED RIEMANN HYPOTHESIS STOP
WILL GIVE DETAILS UPON RETURN STOP

so that God would not endanger his life etc. Also in the book it said that Hardy had a "whimsical sence of humour". Could this be tied in with the (jokingly) clue given earlier and is it possible the telegram is the answer.
It seems like a cheesy answer that they would expect you to put. Please could someone try it as I haven't got the card

If you've survived all this I also managed to recover the original margin statements in latin and english:

Cubem autem in duos cubos, aut quadratoquadratum in duos quadratoquadratos, et generaliter nullam in infinitum ultra quadratum potestatem in duos eiusdem nominis fas est dividere.

Cuis rei demonstrationem mirabilem sane detexi hanc marginis exiguitas non caperet

It is impossible for a cube to be written as a sum of two cubes or a fourth power to be written as the sum of two fourth powers or, in general, for any number which is a power greater than the second to be wrtten as a sum of two like powers.

Ihave a truly marvellous demonstration of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain

So if someone could try these aswell.

Both the telegram and the latin translation text are wrong! But I must admit I was hoping there, it just seemed such an obvious idea which fit with the kind of answers for the other silvers!

Nice work though!

It's not the Latin text or the English translation either - very nice try though, good thinking!

Does anyone think it could possibly be the Fermat phrase slightly modified? Like "I have a truly marvellous demonstration of this proposition which this box is too narrow to contain"[/b]

Before anyone starts going down this road again, I think it should be mentioned that cthrag yaska tried this back on pg 9. He also e-mailed Mind Candy and received the following reply:

Quote:

Thanks for your email. Neither of your answers are correct (nor the spirit in which they are written!).

which referred to the idea of changing margin for edit box or something similar.

Sorry If the translations are wrong but they came straight out of Simon Singh's book so it must be the book that is wrong.

Hello all, not much of a poster or come to that a mathmatician, more a trawler and a newbie to ARGs, but having watched this card on the sidelines, did a little web trawling and found this page. http://plus.maths.org/issue25/features/whirlpool/

tried two attempts at a solution so showing them here to save you any attempts. They are:

1. Whirlpool
2. The City and the Stars

Neither worked so back to the trawling board (excuse the pun)

but I hope this helps in seeking a solution. Very Happy

Hello Again...

3rd attempt today and it was

3. AKS algorithm (incorrect)

Seemed reasonable as an answer as it is not a proof that is reliant on The Reimann Zeta function (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AKS_primality_test)

however thinking a little more laterally, could it be that the black dot printed in the top righthand corner of the card may be significant after all. Given that we could all be working on this until the year dot. Maybe! thats the answer 'Dot' theres the thread... thats it! thread as in cotton, ipso facto 'Dot Cotton'

okay off the rails but if it brings a smile Very Happy

BTW dont know if this may have any relevance or trigger any appropriate thoughts but the fact that the word City is in white and 'White City' is again another reference on the London underground which seems to play a rather large part in this game. Could this be more food for thought to an earlier post regards Mornington Cresent. Could we be playing a grander version of it?

I still think that there is a connection with Hardy's telegram (maybe the correct version is to be found) or the original Fermat statement.

Ok, was just playing with the file that Cherokee Parks put onto page 8 with the top of the card on it, and found what seems to be writing or numbers. Its right in the middle at the top. Could someone who has eyes that work have a glance and tell me if I am wrong?

Hi, I tried inverting the colours to make it easier to see but couldn't see anything at all.

It looks like noise but I think there is something there, I'll have a play with it see if I can clean it up more.

EDIT: just looked at cherokeeparks scan as well as this and once you know what to look for there are numbers(?) there, it looks like 5,393F then not sure if it's more or just noise????? lol But anyway I think Don has found something here, may be more across the whole black/grey fade line as well.
