Im of the same mind-set as BBuck with the motorbike clue. Although, having spent a number of hours a month or 2 ago looking for the bike (without success, i.e. an exact match; a few near matches were found) i cant drum up the enthusiasm to start looking for it again, so hopefully someone else will find it Smile
Then we'll have something to work with for decrypting the message.

ok i'm looking through made-in-china.com and have found a couple of possible matches on the motorbike pic.

There will be more to come so keep checking back if you're working on this line of thinking. (5 pages down, 542 to go)

Just a thought but the card says:

"When I returned home, I spread the cards out on my table and looked for any marks or signs, but they were all new and untouched, apart from one joker which had a star on it"

By my reckoning, "new and untouched" doesn't exclude re-ordered. Just means they are new cards and haven't been marked in any way. They could still have been put in a specific order as the card text doesn't mention unwrapping the pack.

Sorry if this has been touched upon.

Has anyone seen this page about entropy and cards:
http://webs.morningside.edu/slaven/Physics/entropy/entropy2.html

Could this refer to the entropy statement, saying that the deck is ordered in some way or not?

I think that the 'entropy' clue is just a clue to the solitaire cipher. You can't reverse (decrypt) a message unless you have the original deck order. Well that's my take on it anyway.

As regards the "new and untouched" part of the message on the card. I dont think it means a whole lot, because the person who constructed the encrypted message could have used any other pack of cards that had a full deck and 2 jokers. You still start with a normal deck, construct the keyed deck and then decrypt/encrypt the message. So the cards being untouched just means the guy gave Garnet a new pack of cards with the message printed on it, as opposed to the same pack that he used when encrypting the message.

On a completely seperate note, i find it kind of interesting that Garnet never says on the card that he knows or doesn't know who the person is who gave him the pack of cards, he merely avoids it by referring to the person as "one of the players at my table". It's probably nothing, but maybe he knew the person who gave him the message, might it even have been Sente? After the email bertyb got that confirmed Sente was involved. But even if thats true, i dont think it helps in solving the card, its just something i was pondering.

bertyb, when you got that email from Garnet, did he use an email address of his own, or did he reply through Patrick Azadian's email?

Interesting thought: The bikes that doomsdayred shows in the links he has posted are called Yangtze. Now there is also a river called the Yangtze. Somebody has already mentioned the idea of a river and its relevence in the game of poker. Surely this further adds to that idea?

Well spotted Hally, I think the connection may have been made before between them but it hadn't occurred to me to look at the names of the bikes yet.

More possible bike matches. BTW feedback on this would be appreciated so I know I'm not wasting my time.

I think it does help slove the card as sente had previously worked for the company that provides security for perplex city

An artical in the perplex city sentinal has all the info on it

I t can be found at the link below

He had his own email address.

A few months ago i had tried to email Garnet regarding this card, i cant remember what i wanted to ask him, but i couldn't find an email address for him. I tried garnet.reedSPLATperplexcityacademy.com but got a mailer-daemon response at the time.

It seems your email, bertyb, brought about Garnet getting an email address, maybe to help us with this card since its been unsolved for so long. Since you haven't said anything, im guessing his email address is that one i tried before, only now it works. So i sent a test email to that address and no mailer-daemon response, so i suspect thats the right address.

Yup i was right, it is garnet.reedSPLATperplexcityacademy.com, as i just got this reply (auto response im guessing):

Quote:
Thanks for your email. I'm afraid that due to security concerns I can't reply
to mail related to the Cube Retrieval Project personally. For all other mail I
shall respond as soon as possible.

DDR, you're doing a fine job. I'm not sure about some of the ones that you've pulled up, though:

- YZ90B and YZ80 have a big gap between the engine and the front wheel.
- YB100 has the "thing" (sorry, not a biker) below the seat more vertical than horizontal.

The XDZ125-7, QM110-5 and AJD125-G look close - but see my point on the struts on the front wheel below.

I've been using alibaba.com in parallel. I've looked at all 4,993 leads under "motorcycle" and all 2, 007 under "motorbike". There are some close matches, which I'll try and sort out later and post - they may be duplicates of the ones DDR has found. But I've not found an exact one.

One of the main problems is the front wheel, where the bike on the card has two struts going off from the axle to the mudguard. I've not found a single bike on the alibaba site which has these struts. Most bikes have a single strut attached to the mudguard which goes across the top of the wheel.

This is making me think that the bike on the card might not be the latest model, and so won't come up on made-in-china.com or alibaba.com. But given that designs tend to evolve, it might be worth taking the closest matches and searching their company websites.

I'm also thinking of e-mailing the Tianjin University Motorcycle Research Centre to see if they can help identify the bike (or at least date it from the tech). Two problems, though: a) it's Chinese New Year (Happy New Year of the Dog by the way!) and the University will be shut for up to three weeks, and b) I don't have a scanner to include the picture. If anyone with one feels like this would be a useful thing to do, then I'd be really grateful if you can post a clear scan of the bike (if allowed - if not, PM me).

One of the problems with trying to find the motorbike from the card, is that it may be an older version of a bike, i.e. it may be a 1975/1982/1994 etc. version of one of the bikes that have been suggested as possibilities. Finding out if it is an older version and/or finding a picture for it would be 100 times more difficult than looking for bikes that are being sold currently.

Not exactly a helpful post Confused but its worth noting.

If we buy a new deck of cards, we can immediately deal two straight flushes right off the top of the deck. (The cards in a new deck are all in order.) The entropy of the cards is low. When we shuffle the deck, the entropy increases.

... Shuffled decks have more entropy.

Has anyone tried to think up a non CRT question that might lead us to some clues, that we could ask to Garnet?

Perhaps ask him if he knows any good poker players who we might be able to sit and play a game with.

Or ask him about cryptology. "Garnet Reed holds a junior fellowship in cryptology" Ask him if he knows any way to brute force an encrypted message that possibly uses cards as its key.

Im really bad at making stuff up that sounds genuine. ... somone else think of a good related question. Hell ask him if he likes Motorbikes.

If he doesnt know a thing about them we can be sure we are on the wrong track. Considering he would have needed this knowledge if thats part of the puzzle.

So far this Joker with a Star is the only clue i see. Perhaps ask him if there is an encryption that involves stars.... im reaching here.
