idea for a local ARG... need advice from you Pros out there

Hi! I posted this over at Deaddrop, too, hope that's ok. Just trying to get as much help as possible from all you geniuses out there! Wink

Hi, I am new to the ARG community, and I am in the process of designing a VERY basic local ARG for my middle school students. This would consist of clues and a clue trail followed via communication with a Mr. Ryan, who is a museum curator. Some of the artifacts in his museum have recently gone missing and he needs our help to locate them and get to the bottom of what is going on. Also, he sends us a particularly unique artifact (a circular stone somewhat like a Mayan calendar stone) but the problem is he only has half of it. The students will follow clues which lead them through the history of ancient Mesoamerican Cultures, such as the Mayans, the Incas, and the Aztecs, and take them on a virtual tour of some of the major ruins and sites of interest troughout South and Latin America.

Sound like a good start? Again, this is very basic, and any web pages needed are going to be in my local web directory. I guess what I am looking for is any advice you can give me, or some ideas to help fill out my plot.

Thank you very much for any advice you can give.

That sounds like great fun!

A question... what's the run time? A day? A week? A month? Basically, is it going to run for the entire unit on Mesoamerican Cultures or be a special bonus at the end?

It could work well either way, though I would think using it throughout the unit would be ideal. I can't think of a much better way to get kids excited about a subject and to retain information. Though, I'm clearly biased as I love ARGs being used for more than just entertainment and advertising... I use them for corporate training.

I've had a flood of ideas, but they depend on the length of the project.

yes, this would run for the length of the unit, approximately 6-7 weeks or so. that was my idea, too. reading boring info about dead guys in a textbook is... BORING!!! lol! so i thought this might spark some interest and excitement in my students.

hmm.. corporate training? that sounds interesting! Smile

I remember my teacher had this game. I think it was called MayaQuest or something like that. The idea was you had to go around searching Mayan ruins for clues on how to stop an asteroid from hitting the Earth. I never did stop the asteroid, but I did really like the virtual tours, so kudos. For all its being a separate program, MayaQuest's virtual tours were more like slideshows of still portraits with occasional things you could click. Simple as it was, I really liked it.

Good luck. I wish my teachers would write me ARGs.

I used to own that came.

Anyways, it sounds fun enough. How old are the students who will be playing it be?

Middle school is approx 12-15 yrs old, depending on how the grades within that specific district are set-up, and what grades lpilker teaches specifically.

To lpilker: If you need further help or want someone to bounce ideas around with, feel free to contact me and I'll help you any way I can. I think its a great thing that a teacher actually cares enough about their students to take a different approach from the "norm" that will encourage them to think, pay attention, and create a feeling of accomplishment.

Best of luck!

I tried to find this game on the net... but I think it's just too out of date to find...

Yes, these students are 11-13 years old. So far, I've got a few puzzles lined up for them, including a visual puzzle with the months of the mayan "year" that will lead them to a website with a Mayan Calendar converter. They will have to convert a date to Mayan, then use that date to access a hidden page on my personal website. Another puzzle will involve them translating binary code into text, which will lead them to another clue.

I guess what I am still trying to flesh out is the "end-game," or solution to this whole mystery. I am sort-of doing this all backwards, but this is my first time!

Sounds awesome. I've never PMd before, but if you need a hand doing some writing or website making/puzzle making, i'd love to help, just tell me what you need!
