[ARG?] Stranger Adventures

I received this email earlier today...

Quote:
Riddle Productions to Debut First Online Game Series:
"Stranger Adventures" launches February 19-25

February 14, 2006 - Santa Monica, CA - While others are positioned at the starting line of what Variety recently called "the race to bow the first big-budget event series for the Web," Internet entrepreneur Chris Tyler and Larry Bridges, President of the international editing and digital design boutique Red Car, are in the final stretch with StrangerAdventures.com, an interactive espionage-like adventure-game show where all viewers can compete for prize money.

"We've been in development for over a year now and have executed five online trials of the show with over 1,500 players, and the results have been fantastic. Now we're ready to deliver a new genre of exciting entertainment programming to compete for the prime time TV audiences," says CEO Chris Tyler. "With reports that Steven Spielberg, Mark Burnett and other leading Hollywood producers are developing similar programming for Internet distribution, we're certain the market will develop very quickly for all consumers to be able to participate and compete in a real game show experience for millions of dollars in cash and prizes."

The pilot of StrangerAdventures.com will debut February 19 through February 25 to qualify for the new Emmy category for original programming created specifically for non-traditional viewing platforms. Shortly thereafter, the "first season" of ten episodes will begin, arriving every other week. Future seasons will offer back-to-back episodes for a 20-week run. Advergaming, guerilla marketing and branded entertainment legend Larry Bridges, the series' Creative Director, is directing the pilot and premiere season.

The weeklong pilot, as well as the following series, will unfold Sunday through Saturday. Each episode will feature its own central character (the "Stranger") and clues to a 10-digit code that the Stranger needs the players' help to identify. The clues will not require any specialized expertise and will piece together like a puzzle. The first player to crack the code will win the grand prize of $25,000; the second prize of $10,000 will be divided among every viewer who breaks the code before time runs out. The value of the prizes will progress weekly as the audience grows.

The anthology series, which will span different genres, is designed around first-person stories containing intricate plots in which brain-teasing clues are embedded. The stories take shape through a series of graphic-enhanced text-e-mails and live-action video communications the central character sends viewers. The e-mails will contain several hidden clues or "Easter eggs and treasure chests," along with "red herrings and head fakes" and arrive throughout the day via the viewers' personal e-mail. These communications are aimed at promoting active participation in the adventure among viewers.

Chris Tyler, founder and creator of Riddle Productions, LLC and Stranger Adventures, has filed the patent applications integral to providing the series' cross-media method of storytelling. Tyler's past credits include the creation and development of Telecom Xtra for Telecom New Zealand, Access One (OzMail) and Solution 6. He also formerly served as the Internet subject matter expert for Electronic Data Systems' (EDS) Management Consulting Group. Tyler, along with Bridges, is working with WGA writers on crafting upcoming stories. Jan Wieringa, formerly of Propaganda Films and Harmony Pictures, and Anne-Marie Mackay, formerly of Propaganda Films and Palomar, are set to executive produce.

When you log in it asks you "Can you find the 3 clues on this page?" (look down left). I believe that these are the clues that it is talking about.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(1) If you move the money on the right (click and drag) you see "deadmans hand" flashing.

Clicking on the "heart" on the Ace of hearts reveals a hand, but is not the "dead man's hand". For more information about "Dead Man's Hand" read the following:

Quote:
What is the Dead Man's Hand ?

Legend holds that Wild Bill Hickok was shot to death during a poker game in Deadwood, South Dakota, and that the hand he held was two pair, black aces and black eights. On that most people agree. The fifth card is not known for certain. In order of credibility, the following kickers have been suggested:

Five of Diamonds
The actual card is supposedly on display in Deadwood, previously on display at the Stardust in Las Vegas.
Nine of Diamonds
Listed below in the glossary, this card was supposedly reported by first hand accounts, and is used in a recreation in Deadwood.
Queen of Clubs
On display at Ripley's Believe it or Not.
King of Spades
Appeared in the 1936 movie The Plainsman with Gary Cooper as Hickok.

(2)This also releases some chips. Clicking and drag the chips into the circle below (should say "Feed Me"). I believe the order is lowest first (3 chips total). The number "1" comes up when you put the "1000" chip into the circle last.

(3) On the left? Click and Drag the Passport. This reveals a chip. Click and drag the chip. You see the number "1".

The above is only in spoiler because I don't know what it all means yet, but may be important later.

It appears that it doesn't matter about the order, all you need to do is put the 1000 chip on the feed me sign. I wonder what the heck this is all about...

Another poker themed ARG? I spy a trend.

So far we have Kelly, Layton, and Layton's Wife.
Also pictures having a bloke named Jessy and a Kelly, along with a photo of a group.

All of the clues on the first page have been cracked, the Triple 4 and our 'lucky numbers' (2 16 8 23 32) might mean something as well. Due to poor vision I cannot read the other fortune, any help?

Not a problem.. I thought it was a "dot com" but it actually says "Today you will find clue while in town."

So, who else thinks that this Helen chic is actually the wife looking for the money? Anyone? hehehe

*Edit: Don't want to be picky, but the numbers on the fortune cookie thingy is: 2 16 23 8 32... the order may not matter, but it might as well.

I think I might sign up for this, for laughs, on account of living in England... But why do they want my phone number? I dun' want to give them that Sad

And they've got two age 21s and no age 22s. Which is a bit of a bugger for me, really. Razz

Unless that in itself is a kloo...

Ok, I signed up. Now there is a Chinese banknotenote on the background. I'm not sure it actually exists. Being all of about 10p in British money (about 17 cents).

You guys, ignore everything on the Peter website. It was a past trial of theirs...they're done this game before on trial runs.

Just making sure you all knew that. Smile

Also, sorry for the double post, but two things have changed so far. The chinese banknote was added, and deadman's hand stopped flashing. That is all.

2-16-23-8-32
8=2*4 16=8*2 32=16*2 but that leaves 23...

Well, I'm guessing that it for verification purposes. Only people living in the United States can actually win (if you read the actual rules). But you're just playing for laughs tho, you could probably just make up a number to put in, as long as you realize that even if you figure out the 10 digit # first, you won't be able to claim it.

That makes sense, cheers. Should have thought of that. But I was tired.

Yea I know I cannot get a looky at the monies. I'll just keep the answer to myself if I figure it out first, which I most certainly won't. But it seems fairer than posting it on here for anyone to claim large sums of money with.

Toaofenders, I thought that too. They are all 2 to the power n, except that 23. 16 is the closest one to it. Triple 4- well, 4*4*4 = 64, the next in the sequence of powers of 2. Confused

Hiya everyone! I just really heard about ARGs yesterday. I stumbled across Last Call Poker, got bummed when I found out it was over, got more bummed when I found out it was just a big commercial for Gun, and then found this other poker game. They're, ah, not always about poker, are they?

Anyway, two bits from a newb. So its probably two freeway exits past worthless, but it makes me feel like a special special princess, so here it goes.

The Dead Man's Hand is just what was listed before: aces over eights, with that mystery card for the fifth. Those four are the most popular. Some say there was never a fifth, because Hickok was redrawing it when he died, but its always all black aces over eights. Except in Texas Hold 'Em. In Texas Hold 'Em, which is the game they were playing when it all really started happening, a Dead Man's Hand is something called a 2-7 Offsuit. Now I've bugged one friend who plays poker pseudo-professionally, to see if this is true. I only ever found this information on one website. That website is here if you'd like to look. (Apologies, I don't know how to make that flash "spolier" thingy quite yet.)

http://www.pokertips.org/glossarydefs/161.php

Secondly, just my two cents on all this stupid copyrighting nonsense. Thankfully they probably won't succeed at it, but all companies try. One time really springs to mind. I'm a toy designer at Mattel you see, and I remember (sickeningly) when Wizards of the Coast went after all the other game companies for this reason: they "copyrighted" the "use of a symbol to stand for itself." As in, Monopoly dollars couldn't look like dollars anymore. A sword card for your character couldn't look like a sword. Now obviously that didn't end up working, but it caused a huge ruckus in the industry anyway. I guess all I mean is, most people will try to screw you. Hopefully it doesn't work. Smile

Anyway, sorry for rambling on, I hope it was useful or at least not too irritating. I'd love to start ARGing to let me know if any good games to start come up.[/i]

In Texan Hold'em, if you are dealt a 27o they'll say you are drawing dead, they might call you dead money if you don't automatically fold, but they won't call that pocket a Dead Man's Hand.

Not true at all. Drawing dead means you have absolutely 0% chance of winning and can never be distinguished before the flop.

This part is true, but highly unlikely until the flop. Again, anything can happen on the flop, however having 2-7 offsuit would put you behind against any hand other than itself. I will also agree that I've never heard the reference of Dead Mans Hand being used in Texas Hold 'em, however remote a site says it is used.
