Travelling to Anjsbourg

Category: story, 07:24 PM

I'm so sorry I'm writing infrequently. Out here, my contact with the key network is so limited, and so much of that has to be used to keep up the pretence to my friends and my family that I'm still working at a nature reserve in the mountains. I'll try to fill you in on as much as I can, but I think the story of what's happened in the past two weeks will take a while to send. I hope you can be patient.

Firstly, Allain's insisted I make it clear to you all that we haven't been travelling for 3,000 miles in a straight line! We take what roads or tracks exist, and they tend to be winding and circuitous. Added to that, we had to go nearly 1,000 miles out of our way - 500 there and 500 back - to go around a range of mountains whose name I don't even know, not to mention numerous more minor diversions around forests, lakes and ravines. There are no bridges or tunnels or ways cut through the trees. No one has been this way before us to make it easier for us. When we come to a river that's too wide to cross, we have to go upstream until we find the place where it's narrower. Still, as the crow (or one of your aeroplanes) flies, we're about 1,600 miles from Perplex City now. Sometimes I wonder if we're going to fall off the edge of the world, like Madna does in the stories. Maybe, like him, we'll meet our shadows on the other side.

After I last wrote to you, we began travelling even more slowly. We came across more abandoned houses, slowly at first, only one every 10 or 20 miles, and then more frequently, even two or three clumped together. They were all in the same state of disrepair, all looked like they hadn't been inhabited for centuries. But still, we're looking for Claire Castille, we had to check every one.

As we travelled further, we found that some of the houses had strange marks on them. Only to one side - the side we're travelling toward. We started to see these marks on some of the larger rock formations as well. Black streaks, etched into the rock. Like the stones at the base of a campfire, like the air burned on them. Allain's been making notes and collecting samples and taking pictures with his key. We don't talk about what we think might have caused them. We both have the same suspicion and it has to do with the war, with Viendenbourg, with what we've come here to find. It seems to make Allain happy to collect the specimens, although I don't know what he's planning to do with them. He says his mother always taught him how important it was to collect "scientific evidence" even in the days they used to go for country walks together, looking for signs that spring was coming. I can't help wondering what Claire's been looking for evidence of, what Allain's looking for now.

But, after several days of travelling like that - slowly, meticulously, collecting samples, coming across more and more scarred rocks, I think we've now found what it was evidence of. We brought the car up a low hill, just enough to conceal the valley below from sight. We're used to this now. We go slowly, in case there's a sheer drop the other side. There was a falling off on the other side of this rise, a dip in the earth, enough so that we had a view across maybe two or three miles of valley. Empty valley, for the most part, filled with scrubby plants, a river running through it down towards the sea. A good place for a settlement. Someone else must have thought so too because, on the outskirts of this valley, where the rocks curl over to give a little protection to the area underneath, there were houses. Broken houses, but houses, in a wide half-moon shape, extending around the circumference. Like scraps of crust left in a pie dish after the pie had been tipped out. The remains of Anjsbourg.

Note- yes, the date on it is correct, but it did only just appear today...perhaps the delay is down to scrappy reception, with them being so far out in the sticks...

Somehow I never realised how far apart the warring cities were geographically. I had this picture of rival neighbouring cities, like in roman times before Rome became the main power in the region...

Anyway, it surprises me that the whole Anjsbourg region is deserted. The city itself is the only thing that is destroyed. Or did the heat from the bomb kill people for miles without destroying the buildings? Still you can only see scorch marks when getting close to the town. What happened to the people living further away? Did they die of radioactivity or did they have to flee because of it? If so, is it still radioactive today and are Scarlett and Alain in any danger? And if it isn't radioactive or otherwise dangerous, why hasn't it been resettled?

At a guess, I would say that the area just gradually drained of people. Their capital had been destroyed obviously, so I suspect that the people just drifted in towards perplex city until the area was abandoned. From the sounds of things, relief aid and the like doesnt seem as likely there so after being defeated, the perplexians probably didnt help with rebuilding.

scorched earth is quite local, it's true. though how local we are talking about is another matter. a whole thriving metropolis is gone, so like that bomb had to be pretty huge. the outlying areas would have been fFarms and things supporting the city. no city, no mouths to fFeed, no fFarms. even those only lightly affected by the actual bomb would have been devastated by the backlash. also, had scarlett driven any other direction, she might see more life in other regions. unless, of course, perplex used the same kind of weapon against all its enemies, and now noone lives, anywhere at all.

man this is dark. no wonder they don't like to talk about it.

fFor perspective, i draw up a little map showing 1600 miles fFrom london to moscow.

Well, that map is what I'm talking about. It's a huge territory. On earth, you'd have smaller towns in that area, you'd have villages. Even if everything is centred around one town in PerplexCity world, in 268 years a new town could have developed at the periphery of the destroyed area. Relief aid isn't everything, people managed to get back to their feet after catastrophes long before relief aid existed (I'm not saying it was easy, mind).

For comparison, imagine London being destroyed and the area around it scorched. Do you really believe that everybody else would migrate out of Britain, that is unless they had no other choice? People tend to stay where they live if they can, and plod on. And my guess is their first choice wouldn't be to join their enemy, the one responsible for their plight!

How I wish I could read the Foreign Affairs subject in the Sentinel! Is there anyone we can ask about the current political situation in their world? For that matter, I'd also love to know more about the power structure in PerplexCity...

I think that the reference to the black "scorch" marks can pretty much be only one thing...the remains of the inhabitants who were caught in the blast/fallout/area-of-effect of whatever the Perplexians used to erm, "neutralise" Anjsbourg. From the pie-crust description, it had an explosive point of impact or explosion...and then whatever it expelled went a *long* way, instantaneously, and left just the charred vestiges of the poor sods in it's way. Dark, very dark...(almost the holy grail of military ordinance - destroy your foe, but leave the buildings intact - clearly this isn't *quite* that, um, "successful", but it seems to have done a reasonable job of winning the war)

Im just wondering if it was something as messy as a H-bomb or A-bomb. Considering weve been told that the Perplexians have backtracked in their technology slightly we could be looking at something like a particle cannon, fired right in the heart of Anjsbourg then used to kill off the surrounding villages.

But yeah def dark, no wonder there were loads of protests about the war gallery at the museum. I shudder to think what there was, Ive seen a few exhibits from WW2 holocaust camps and hiroshima and that was pretty sick.

Not sure it has anything at all to do with this but what if Perplex City pulled down an asteroid or something similar onto Anjsbourg? This scenario occurred in a book by Greg Keyes called Newton's Cannon in which Louis the XIV demands his philosophers create a weapon of ultimate destruction; code-named - wait for it- Newton's Cannon. This all occurs in the early 1700's. The map of London to Mosow reminded me that in this book France destroys London with an asteroid using alchemical means.

Would not an impact send up enough debris into the atmosphere to posssibly run outlying the inhabitants out of the area?

Assuming Granier's diary gives us the planning stages of these events, the weapon was tested in cold blood on innocents and then genocide was committed. Which is more than dark.

But to follow up on Granier's diary, we need to prod Violet, although she might need a replacement for Cymbalisty, she was having trouble on her own wasn't she? Also not sure whether anyone's mentioned the contents of Granier's diary to Scarlett, might give her a useful point of view on the blasted waste-scape. Will do so if there's no objections...

...although saying things like that always asks for trouble!

Incidentally, not heard from TP in a while...wonder what he/she'll make of having to hold hands with us to form the human chain (if indeed we are; but it suggests that some tasks will require inter-team collaboration).

everyone is speculating as to HOW it was bombed/burnt etc, but does anyone have any idea WHY this area was attacked? what was there previously? We really do need some background info on this war. Do we have a way to contact alains uncle? ask him for as much info on the war as possible?

just wonderin!

Not that much useful info sadly, it's a bit of a taboo on PPC so I doubt we will have much success generating info ourselves.

Scott does a great job on the Wiki though with what we do have-well worth a read.

A bit of speculation from Garniers diary is that they were siding with Viendenbourg against perplex city in the war. If that was the case, then that is probably why they were attacked. It seems that the main grievance was against viendenbourg (again from the wording of the Garnier diaries), and anjsbourg merely chose the wrong side.
