Well dne to everyone who helped out on this card, sure we had some wrong turns but wheres the fun in getting it right straight away?

Now then: Try and solve Reinmann or tease the 13th labour thread?

For those requesting a worked solve I have something of sorts that might please:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Using this website http://www.byzant.com/kabbalah/hebrew.asp and taking "]" (kaph - as 500 being the final-last letter in word) gives:

208, 352, 8, 305
264, 493, 384, 316
123, 204, 468, 500, 205
143, 233, 220
221, 5
517, 466
312, 487

The subsequent output from Ramazels XY=600 (From the card) spreadsheet, using AZ=1 gives:

HA NM AS LH KW SB OG MW EH HE RA TU HD FN UN TA IN AV TD RC LA SH

Von's text implied that there were mistakes in the code, not surprising if written during a lecture and trying to be sekrit. I have identified two such types of error.

1) Taking AA=1 instead of AZ=1

i.e. in a

ZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ stylee

and using this to correct the boldified letters:

HA NM AS LH KW SB OG MW EH HE RA TU HD FN UN TA IN AV TD RC LA SH

gives:

HA NM AH LH KD SY OT MD ES HE RA TU HD FN UN TA IN AE TD RC LA SS

2) Finally looking at the boldified ones again and assuming typos of one letter.

i.e. an M instead of an N etc. gives:

HA NN AH LI KD SY OU ME ET HE RA TT HE FO UN TA IN AF TE RC LA SS

Putting together in an sentence-like way gives:

HANNAH LIKES YOU MEET HER AT THE FOUNTAIN AFTER CLASS.

Moral of the story, spend longer checking your secret note is written correctly.

I for one wonder if true love happened at the fountain or if the typos caused the sekrit rendevous never to happen. I guess we shall never know!

If i've missed anything out let me know.

From what I have read:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I thought Von's hint only implied spacing differences and possibly two ciphers, not actual spelling mistakes.
I tried graphing letter values against the Hebrew totals to see if I could find an underlying pattern, but only managed to prove graphically the previous statements that each total is proportional to 26 times the value of the first letter of the pair, and the difference between those two is proportional to the second letter's values (Half of them inverse), there are still the offsets that make the odd letter slightly wrong.

I'm not trying to detract from the fantastic effort that has been put into this solve, it's just that I have this nagging feeling that the answer has been pulled out of a puzzle with a slightly more definitive solution.

I think it reflects that the clue for the digraph element was too loose and didn't provide enough information (unless we have all missed something). I had a spreadsheet full of different combinations, none of which worked. And I don't think I'm alone in that.

Hello Sherbet,

Thanks for your email.

We're very sorry about the errors on the card. The scribes are working hard to
remove them from future reprints and to make sure there are no mistakes on the
new waves of cards.

Regards,

Perplex City Customer Services

so that was it! pah!a free pack of wave 3 wouldnt have hurt tho, would it? Rolling Eyes

Hmm....maybe i'll buy Reimann and Thirteenth Labour after they reprint, to see if there are any errors on those cards.......

I'd love to be able to see the errata on the solve screen when they update it...

I wonder if they would send out paper printed blanks of the corrected puzzle with the next leitmarks, so we can put them in our folders over the top of the old one? Razz

Wow, what a lot of reading! i've just read through the whole thread and barely grasp it. My grids... THEY ARE MEANINGLESS!!! The last time i tried this card Middle of Feb it was unsolved, gave up until now.

Thanks to Gibbet for 'showing his workings, I kinda get it now.

Kind of.

My god what hard work, thanks to you all

Well, I got a new copy of this card in the Wave 3 packs, and apart from the Season/Wave marking being updated the card is identical.

What are the current errata on this card?

Don't throw your notes away! Some of this may be pertinent to broadside and shuffled.

The citation above about hale and the spy arrested the day he was hanged also gives another old meaning for broadside - news sheet!

This puzzle (ciphers of history) involved noise, that is errors in the plain text. Shuffled mentions entropy, which is also a way to characterize noise in an encoded message.

I'm not sure I buy the 'coding errors' theory. If we're to accept Gibbet's explanation, well over half of the pairs have mistakes in them -- only nine out of 22 pairs were coded correctly. Possibly there's some more systematic way of accounting for this that we haven't thought of.
