Er...no. Why the hostility? Did you even read the above posts? Here's a good link that explains it:
http://www.geocities.com/thesciencefiles/emc2/emc2.html

Note that the page is called E=mc2 explained...and mentions the word "relativity" not at all.

[Edit]: If nothing else, this ARG will be worth it for the crash course in relativity theory and nuclear weapons that everyone's getting (I definitely include myself in that, btw). Very Happy

Actually, it does. When the uranium or plutonium in an atomic bomb undergoes fission, these atom's nuclei split into a pair of smaller nuclei. As it happens, these new nuclei actually weigh less than the nucleus from which they were formed. This is because some of the mass of the original nucleus was converted to energy, and this conversion obeys e=mc^2. From the American Museum of Natural History on Einstein:

Quote:
Perhaps most famously, E=mc2 helps explain the energy released by atomic bombs and produced by nuclear power plants. Under the right conditions, certain atoms can split apart in a process called "fission." During fission, some of the mass of the original atoms is converted to energy. Scientists have learned how to exploit fission for weapons as well as for peaceful applications, such as nuclear power.

This is why atomic bombs are so powerful. Unlike a conventional explosive, that releases energy stored in interatomic bonds (say TNT or nitroglycerin), an atomic bomb actually converts mass into energy!

Just to make sure we're all singing from the same song sheet, E=Mc^2...

E(nergy) = M(ass) x The speed of light squared (I never knew why it was a "c"...)

Which is all well and good, but isn't relativity.

Expressing relativity involves proving that c in system a is equal to c in system b... or something along those lines anyway.

And then it starts getting ugly. Please lord, don't let the PMs start introducing Chaos theory... Although I think that's been mentioned somewhere here before too...

Can we move on? This is starting to make my brain hurt, and that has nothing to do with the metal pipe sticking out of it.
