[Group Movie]Hamlet:Combat Evolved

TEMPORARILY SHELVED
April 2nd- I have no means to use Xbox Live for now, technical difficulties with my service provider. I am still working out set up, but anything to do with filming is pretty much shutdown for the next while. I will continue to outline everything, and if there is anyone who still wants to take a crack at it when I'm finished and my net is working, I'd still love to do it.
Tj-

The other night Krystyn, Lois, and I filmed a short scene from Hamlet for a school project of mine. It turned out really well and there's been some interest in filming a much longer version.

I'm pretty sure Hamlet has never been translated into any Halo machinima before so this would be an uber fun project and an artistic first.
Here's the scene from the other night. So far we just went with ripping the dialogue from Almereyda's Version for the video.
Hamlet...Halo Style

I like how that turned out and we could keep it like that, not stick just with Almereyda, but there's Zefferrili, Branagh, Olivier, and about 30 other versions to pick dialogue from as well. I liked it that way because it took out the dialogue problems of other videos, like the Sketch Comedy vid.

So, Any takers, discussion, suggestions?

Well if were going to do this i think we should hold auditions. Not speaking parts but to see who can follow directions for certain scenes. Because this could be very time intensive we would need people who are able to listen and keep the messing around to a minimal. I know that screwing around will occur naturally, because its fun...but when the time comes if we want this to look professional we need people who won't be screwing around when we are trying to film.

I'm not trying to take the fun out of this because I think it would be awesome to do...if done right. And my Dante and Krystyn had fun filming the short 2 minute scene.

I also think we should have a filming schedule. I understand that many people are unavailable, but we have enough people that we should be able to work around it.

These are all just personal opinions for what I think should be done for a successful production. Again feel free to correct anything if you feel it to be wrong.

perhaps we could do abridged first, and if it goes well fill in the blanks at the end?

We could do that, just a shortened version at first. We'd need to pick which scenes and acts to keep in and which to take out.
I don't think we'd be able release all as one whole thing. We'd prolly have to release it bit by bit, maybe by scenes?
I need to seriously fix my router but maybe we could try this out and see how we like it with just the first scene of Act I?
It's another not so complicated scene, it's where Marcellus and Horatio first meet the ghost, and the background is filled in.

That's the link to the whole play at Sparknotes, the first act ends at page 16, about line 170. It would be about 10 minutes long, give or take.
It'd be four actors, Marcellus, Horatio, Ghost and Barnardo.

I find it VERY distracting to use a copy of a film's soundtrack. The ambient noise, breathing, and foley create an immediate disjointedness.

Well, there are other videos that have used dialogue from a film, the best one I can remember is the Gladiator opening which was pretty awesome.

It takes some hard work, but hopefully we can get rid of the disjointedness or find a way to make it blend better.

Abridged first...
Get our baring and then consider going the whole ten.

We could always just do it ourselves and skip the background audio track.
I know I'm not the only person out there who can do voices good
we have ThaJinx, VectorB, Ubercado, Krystyn, and quite a bit of other people who have already boasted some darn good abilities in other videos.

syst (regnevah) and FugitiveSoldier are always good to hit up on concept ideas for setting and placement.

Doing the audio ourselves would be better because we can know when the actors are talking and they can make the movements themselves. The only problem is that in the past we have had problems with getting the sound to be loud enough or audible enough so that the person is understood. Maybe we could do voiceover sessions on the side somehow because the xbl communicator is not the best for sound recording.

only with you, stew...

We can always reocrd quieter people via skype and overlay the audio
I can distort it enough to make it all sound consistant.

What you could do for voice acting, what I did with Zorplex on a project that feel through, is have a person that has a mice for their computer use the program Audacity to record themselves a few times, save it in .wav format and send it in to the person doing the editing. They can review it and give them tips and have them redo any lines that don't workout. I don't know if it would work having the person that is doing the reading over skype and record themselves but you could try that, or just record directly over skype like you suggested. It's a good little program and fairly user friendly, I think I picked it up from unforum actually. Personally, I look at our cops video and wonder whether or not that would be a good idea though. Confused

We'd have to do all the audio over skype, all of it, if we did it our selves. It never turns out clear enough over Xbox Live, especially not for a dramatic performance like this one.
I definetly could see us doing the audio ourselves if that's what everyone wanted though, I just mentioned the dialogue ripping because of all our past problems.
Ps I do have skype now, sorta, I actually found my laptop has a built in mic on it, which solves the problem of me not having a mic. The name thing for me is "DanteTheBard" cuz the poet was taken.

It seems that we have the interest to actually make this work. So I think the next step would have to be creating some kind of manageable schedule to work with. If you are interested in doing this please post the times and days you will be able to act/film. Also please post what you can do to assist the production (film/edit/act/sound etc...) And keep in mind to leave time to actually play Halo. Because all work and no play...

So I'll go first:

Shane-aka LoisMustDie, Stewie
Days- Any Day of the week
Times - 730PM EST - 12AM EST
Available for: Filming/Acting/Editing/Sound etc...

I think doing it this way will actually allow for more flexibility. And remember that if you cannot make it one day its not that big of a deal.

Here's to the next step...

Someone's done Othello with World of Warcraft.

The sound balance between the soundtrack and the speaking is kinda horrid. Heh.
