Ooh I stayed there last summer. Very nice indeed, but I could only afford it at special convention rates. Alas. But on the up side, they include a buffet dinner most nights of the week.

And breakfast is included. And it's a breakfast buffet that's actually decent for hotel food (make your own waffles!). Also, their room service is P.F. Chang's.

Good times. Very Happy

As I was saying, if you can get enough of a discount to make it practically affordable...

I'd love to come to chicago to visit my 1st ARGFest.

BUT a quick browse gets me $900 for airtickets and another $900 for a hotel.
add to that $500 for drinks&food for a total of $2300 for a week in chicago.

Hmm.. I'll have to think about that..

Chi-Town

You don't need to get a hotel in the city. If you get one in Joliet, there is an Amtrak train that goes from Joliet to Chicago. There are also express trains that travel to different parts of the city as well. Or, if you really want to get adventurous, rent a car. Smile The traffic isn't much worse then in New York City (I used to live there and now live in Illinois and have been to Chicago many times, so I know).

Or, if you want to, I will be renting a car to travel too and from Chicago during the ARGFest and would be more then happy to pick people up who are staying outside of the city. But only a few, the car isn't that huge.

ARGFest ideas

1. I saw bagsbee on Friday. We discussed where people might stay in Chicago and wondered about the possiblity of everyone staying in the same hotel, or at least in the same area of Chicago. I don't know Chicago that well, but I know for ARGFest New York it was much simpler having most people in the same vicinity.

I would also be interested in some sort of a suite. I hope to bring my son- who will have just turned 16- and who needs a separate room. (or maybe not if he doesn't want to attend, but either way I think a suite could work well.) So having a suite, if it isn't too expensive, would be great. Maybe someone else would be interested in sharing - usually suites can hold a few people.

2. I have heard that flying to New York from Europe and then going from here to Chicago might be much less expensive for our international guests. I know that last year having a European contingent, ok primarily UK contingent, was a big part of the fun!!

So we were kicking around some ideas of having people come to New York and figuring out a way to get to Chicago. Options include:
flying -we can check Jet Blue or maybe get a group rate? Smile
train - not that cheap
bus -which would be pretty cheap but slow.
renting a van or something ourselves and taking the 12-14 hour cross country trek in a road trip to Chicago.

Ideas anyone? Everyone knows that I am a last minute sort of planner, but I think we could start working on this now. Last year was such a great time that I want to try to help people get here for the next one. Plus, I miss you guys, even the people I haven't met yet. Very Happy

If there's enough interest on both sides of the pond, that sounds like a potentially really fun idea. Obviously as a student I'd be for the cheaper options primarily but it's possible I could stretch out a bit.

Living in Illinois and driving back and forth to Queens, New York (because that is where my family lives) you are looking at about $80 in gas one way. A van rental can run you almost $60/day (might be more, but I've never had to rent a van for my trips). Add food to that and you are running up quite a bill for 13 hours of driving.

However, despite looking at $240 for a van (4 days at $60/day), $160 in gas and another $20 in food costs, it still might be cheaper your way just to rent a van.

My offer still stands for anyone who is staying outside of Chicago who need a ride in and out of the city (as long as it is on my way up, which would include Bloomington, Joliet and everything else just off of 55).

Hilton Homewood Suites for $69/night

S'pose we can track down an American Express travel agent? This offer is good for most of the year (including the dates we need) at the Chicago Homewood Suites:

Hilton Dream Certificate Program
Quote:
AMEX travel agents receive a special rate of $69 @ Hilton, Doubletree, & Embassy; $49 @ Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites. Hilton Dream Certificate should be presented at check-in; good up to four nights at participating Hilton Family Hotels in the U.S. Reservation must be made through a Hilton Family website.

Priceline is showing me hotel & airfare (from Atlanta) at $474 for one or $734 for two at the Club Quarters Central Loop Chicago. How does that compare to the Homewood Suites, considering we may not be able to get rooms at the Homewood Suites for less than $250 per night?

The best I could do this afternoon at Homewood Suites was $287/night - two beds so I could share, but wow.

Where IS it?

The wiki doesn't even say, so somebody save me from reading the whole thread, please: Where exactly in Chicago is ARGFest going to be?

Chicago.

But seriously...downtown I guess? Chicago has decent (from what I hear) mass transit and is not too hard to get around. As long as it's relatively near some sights, and establishments where they serve adult beverages, I'm cool.

I found a king bed room for the $49/night. Now I just have to find a way to get my hands on one of those Hilton Dream Certificate thingies.

Is part of ARGFest going to be about solving the mystery of where ARGFest will be held? Or, do we even speak of such things?

Howdy, folks, long-time-no-see for some of you.

Problem most interesting for the hotel stay... I can vouch for the one I stayed at for the Hivemeet (nearly typed Hivemeat... oh, Fogo, my darling), as described in my blog entry. It ran about $80-90/night for a single occupancy; yes, it was a cubby-hole, but it was right on the Magnificent Mile.

-- Steve's pondering whether to go or not... it's a maybe.
